Born in Stratford-upon-Avon April 23, 1564

Died in Stratford-upon-Avon April 23, 1616

Early life and family

In Shakespeare’s time, spelling was not formalized, so Shakespeare’s name was spelled:

• Shakspear• Shagspere• Shaxper• Shaksper

Shakespeare probably went to school until he was between 13 and 15 years old. He would have learned Latin, English and math.

Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in 1582.He was 18.She was 26.

Six months after they were married, William and Anne had a daughter named Susanna.

In 1585 twins Judith and Hamnet were born.

Hamnet died at age 11.

Shakespeare arrived in London around 1595 and worked as an actor.

After he began writing plays, they were performed at The Globe Theater.

• Wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and started out as an actor

• He wrote comedies, histories, and tragedies

• R & J was written about 1595 (Tragedy)

Elizabethan Theaters• The Globe was a standard Elizabethan

Theater (built in 1599)• Was built by Lord Chamberlain’s Acting

Company (Shakespeare worked for them)

• Theater troupes were almost like gangs.• At the time, actors and people

associated with the theater were of very low status.

• Theater was meant to be popular entertainment for the masses.

appear on stage

Shakespeare died on his birthday in 1616 and was buried in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Shakespeare’s tomb reads:

Good frend for Jesus sake forbeare toDigg the dust encloased heare.Blest be ye man yt spares these stones andCurst be he yt moves my bones.

In his will, Shakespeareleft almost all of his property to Susanna and her husband. He left his second best bed to his wife.
