    CHANGING WITH THE TIMES

Rewind to June 1979, some 35 years ago, when a tiny, trimmed-down

newspaper was mailed to around 12,000 septic pumpers throughout the

Midwest. That little paper consisted of a handful of advertisers, a few classified

ads, some makeshift editorial and a crudely-drawn comic of even crudersubject matter. That was the first edition of the The Midwest Pumper.

Weve come a long way since that first issue ofThe Midwest Pumper.By 1981 a conference had

grown out of it The Liquid Waste Haulers Equipment & Trade Show. It consisted of a few hundred

attendees and couple dozen exhibitors. We even had some Canadian attendees, so the following year

we chose to rename it the The International Liquid Waste Haulers Equipment & Trade Show to better

    reflect our global presence.

Fast-forward to 2014 and the Pumper & Cleaner Expo has grown into one of the largest trade shows

in the United States 63rd largest to be precise. A tiny little paper for septic pumpers has expanded out

into eight highly focused magazines for professionals across every facet of the water and wastewater

    professions.

Your success has fueled our success and those of us willing to change with the times are the futureof this industry. Now, after more than 20 years, it is time to make another name change. Were not just

a show for pumpers and cleaners weve grown and evolved into so much more, and so have you.

The industry and profession has surpassed what many of us could have ever imagined way back in

1979, when Pumper was delivered to mailboxes across a few Midwestern states.

In 2015, the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International will

become WWETT the Water and Wastewater Equipment, Treatment &

Transport show. A little better snapshot of what we have become and where

we are heading. Its a show for an entire industry of hard-working people

who maintain our sewer and water infrastructure, properly treat and

dispose of wastewater, keep water safe, and our environment healthy.

Thanks for growing with us these first 35 years and joining us for this

one. See you at WWETT 2015 and well keep that tradition moving forward.

2014 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo InternationalPg. 20

This year marks my fifth Pumper & Cleaner EnvironmentalExpo International. I still remember my first show, walking into

the vastness of the exhibit hall when I couldnt tell a vacuum truckfrom a portable restroom. (Dont worry, I figured it out prettyquick.)

The Expo can feel overwhelming for first-time attendees, butthe experience and knowledge gained are well worth the timeand money spent.

Ive been lucky enough to meet many of you because part

of my job involves interviewing attendees, seminar leaders andexhibitors for videos. Youve probably seen me with a cameraguy wandering around the show floor. Were the video crew, and we create videos and post them on the Expo website (www.pumpershow.com), to our Facebook pages and on exhibitorwebsites.

And Ive also learned a lot from you during my years at theExpo. Now its my turn to pass along some helpful tips to make

your show more enjoyable. Heres some advice for Expo goers, whether youre a seasoned pro or a first-time attendee:

Plan of action As North Americas largest trade show for the environmen-tal services industry with more than 500,000 square feet ofexhibits and new technology using a virtual floor plan is agreat way to ensure you see it all, especially if you werent here

for the start of the show and need to make up for lost time. Theonline tool available on the Expo website will help you planyour time so you dont miss anything.

The floor plan offers a quick and easy way to find exhibitsand products. A graphic layout shows where each company isexhibiting and provides its booth number, website, and phonenumber and address.

Look up companies and products with the Search the Showoption in the upper left-hand corner of the floor plan page. Forexample, a search for Pipeline Rehabilitation/Lining will high-light all the exhibits on the floor plan that have those products.

You can also create a show planner to save personal informa-tion, company and product information, and keep a schedule of

    educational seminars.

The mobile website on your smartphone is another helpfultool for organizing your time at the Expo. You can search exhibi-tors to quickly find booth numbers, click the calendar icon to seeeducational seminar schedules and locations, or use the map ofIndianapolis to find local restaurants.

Sign up for Facebook and Twitter updates on the mobile site

to stay informed on everything happening at the show.

Meet and greet The Expo is the best place to meet other contractors andmunicipal managers from across the nation and around theworld who face similar industry issues. Whether youre strollingthe show floor or sitting down for lunch, introduce yourself tosomeone new. Youre all there for the same reasons to gainsome knowledge, buy a new piece of equipment, and networkwith your peers.

The COLE Pub, located in the back of the hall next to themain concession area, is another great place to build your pro-fessional network. Open today from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., theCOLE Pub is a fun way to relax, have a drink and make a newacquaintance.

As part of the video crew, I interview attendees, which usu-ally involves randomly walking up to some of you. Ive learneda lot from having candid conversations about why you enjoy theExpo. Ive heard so many words of appreciation from attendeesfor the COLE staff and the overall show, and I cant thank youall enough for making the show a great and informative experi-ence.

We couldnt do it without you. If you have suggestions or ques-

tions for me or any of the editors, stop by and see us at theeditors booth (#4028).

The timing couldnt be better for country star Lee Brice toarrive in Indianapolis for the Pumper & Cleaner EnvironmentalExpo Industry Appreciation Party. Fresh off his Song of the Yearaward for I Drive Your Truck at the 2013 Country Music As-sociation Awards in November, Brice is quickly becoming one ofthe brightest and most sought-after performers around.

Winning the CMA award was definitely toward the top,

says Brice, when describing where the prestigious honor ranksamong his career highlights. It is simply amazing!

While this is Brices first trip to the Expo, its entirely possiblethat, had things gone a bit differently a decade ago, he wouldbe a regular attendee. Brice attended Clemson University on afootball scholarship and majored in engineering, fully intend-ing to become a civil engineer. In fact, while Brice grew up ina musical family and has always had a passion for performing,

he wasnt focused on music right away. It wasnt until a forearminjury forced him to step away from his role as the long snapperon the Clemson football team that he decided to take a seriouslook at a music career.Becoming a Nashville hit-maker Brice latched on as a songwriter with Curb Music Publish-ing, cowriting some 150 songs his first year. Some of his writingcredits include Still for Tim McGraw, Not Every Man Livesfor Jason Aldean, Crazy Days and What it Takes for AdamGregory, More Than A Memory for Garth Brooks, and CrazyGirl, which became one of 2013s biggest hits for the Eli YoungBand. Brice holds eight of the 13 writing credits on his newestalbum, Hard 2 Love, and considers writing a big part of whohe is as an artist.

Its awesome! That is one thing that never gets old, says

Brice of the feeling he gets hearing another popular artistperform one of his songs on the radio. It is always cool to hearpeople take what you wrote and give life to it in their own way.

Driving your truck While Brice writes much of his ownmusic, it was a song he cant take thewriting credit for, I Drive Your Truck, that took the big CMA honor. Cowrittenby Connie Harrington, Jessi Alexanderand Jimmy Yeary, the song could havebeen recorded by a number of major

Nashville acts, but Brice was forward-thinking enough to know a powerfulsong when he heard, and felt it.

The first time I heard the song, it absolutely slayed me. Itbrought me to tears, says Brice. It became personal to me thevery first time that I heard it, and I had a feeling that peoplewere really going to be moved by it. The writers took a broadsubject on a specific event and made it accessible for anybody

to listen to and connect with through lyrics, and everybodydoes.

The tune was inspired by a National Public Radio report onthe sacrifice of Army Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti, who died inAfghanistan while trying to save a fellow soldier. Jareds father,Paul, keeps the memory of his son alive by regularly driving

Jareds Dodge Ram pickup. Brices label threw a party to cel-ebrate the song reaching No. 1 on the country charts last May,and Paul Monti was there to meet Brice and the writers whosework has made his son an inspiration to millions.

It was a very moving experience to meet Paul. There is sucha personal story attached to the song that you cannot forgetPaul, and Jareds service to our country, says Brice. It is sucha positive song about being able to connect with that someone

youve lost in your life. Already knowing the story, being able to

meet the family was just even more powerful and added moreinspiration for the song.

A family man at heart While Brice continues his passion for his music, he is evenmore passionate for his family wife Sara and two young sons.A tireless writer and performer, Brice took the entire month ofDecember off to spend with his growing family.

My family is everything to me, says Brice. They inspire meto be my best, and Im fortunate enough to get to do what I loveand have a supportive wife and family behind me. I want to do

well and continue doing well for them.

In his downtime, Brice enjoys hunting and watching football. The usual guy stuff, he says. I can also always be found writ-ing, listening to and recording music. Its my passion and I enjoyit even in my spare time.

A show with energy and emotion When Brice takes the stage tonight at the JW Marriott Grand

Ballroom in Indianapolis, Expo attendees can expect a mix of hisupbeat hits such as the catchy Parking Lot Party, FourOn The Floor, Hard To Love, and Carolina Boys, alongwith heartfelt, emotional tunes like Love Like Crazy, BeautifulEvery Time, See About A Girl, A Woman Like You, and,of course, I Drive Your Truck.

My thing is, I just have a ball doing what I do. I grew upwatching a lot of shows. I saw Garth Brooks one time, and I justloved that he could come out and rock you in your face, andthen all of a sudden just break down to a guitar and sing to

you kind of like a roller coaster dynamic, says Brice.Thats what I like to do what I try to do anyway.

    Inside the Industry Appreciation Party

For more than 30 years, COLE Publishing has thrownan Industry Appreciation Party at the Pumper & CleanerEnvironmental Expo to recognize the hard work anddedication of those in the liquid sanitation industry. This

years party, slated to begin at 5 p.m. tonight at the JWMarriott Hotel Grand Ballroom, promises to be anotherhigh-energy celebration. We recently sat down with COLEPublishing co-founder Bob Kendall to discuss the history of

the party, and find out whats in store this year.

Q: Why do you throw a party every year?

Kendall:The whole idea is to recognize the attendees forthe hard work they do throughout the year. Often whatthey do goes unrecognized. They are the focal point ofthe industry, and deserve to be celebrated.

Q: Youve had some big-name entertainersperform in the past. Who stood out to you?

Kendall:Just a few include the Oak Ridge Boys, Big &Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Neal McCoy, Dierks Bentley,Lonestar, Trace Adkins, Rodney Atkins. Craig Morgan dida great job last year. I love Sawyer Brown, and wevehad them back several times. Jeff Foxworthy was a lot offun, too.

Q: Another highlight of the Party is, of course, the 25 cent tap beers. How did that comeabout?Kendall: Thats all part of the party. Weve always offeredchoice refreshments to our attendees as a way to recog-nize and appreciate what they do.

Q: Why should attendees plan to attendthe Industry Appreciation Party?

Kendall:First off, its free with full registration. All theyhave to do is show their badge at the door. Second, the

JW Marriot Grand Ballroom is a great setting. These areperformers who are typically used to performing in frontof sold-out arenas and stadiums, and our attendees can

get right up next to them. Its a very intimate setting. Thatswhat makes it the must-attend event for our industry.

What started as a way to kill time during a trip to New Yorklast year turned out to be much more for GapVax owner GaryPoborsky.

Poborsky found himself staying at the hotel across the streetfrom the Orange County Choppers New York shop. After walk-ing around in the showroom, Poborsky asked to speak with atechnician about fixing up a project trike he had at home. The

trike had been a project bike for his son that was never finished.

My plan was to outfit the trike with all hand controls soa disabled person could operate it, says Poborsky. I got astart on it, but I guess I never got back around to it, so itssat for awhile.

Once he started telling them about the trike, the team atOrange County Choppers agreed to finish the project for him.Orange County Choppers Founder Paul Teutul Sr. and Poborskyfound they had much in common, swapping stories about thegood old days when they first started their businesses. Poborsky, starting with one septic truck, helped clean up after the John-stown Flood, while Paul Sr. started his custommotorcycle fabrication business from theback of a pickup truck.

It turns out that we had a lot of similari-ties starting out, says Poborsky. In the end,we were just two businessmen who startedfrom nothing.

The connection got Poborsky thinking. With the companys 25th anniversary soonapproaching, he wanted to celebrate the oc-casion in a special way. The team at Orange

County Choppers was happy to oblige. WithTeutul Sr.s assistance, Poborsky commis-sioned a specialized custom motorcycle tocelebrate the companys silver anniversary.

The cycle, delivered personallyby Teutul Sr., was first unveiledNov. 15 at the companys

    Johnstown, Pa., headquarters.

The chopper featuresGapVaxs orange and royal bluetwo-tone paint scheme, with cus-

tom wheels that resemble the cyclone vacuums found in the filtra-tion systems of GapVax industrial vacuum trucks. Poborsky andthe team at GapVax were instrumental in the choppers design.

We definitely had some input, but nobody here had seen thefinal product until Paul Sr. delivered it, says Poborsky. The finalproduct turned out very nice better than we all expected.

In addition to the fabrication of the custom chopper, TeutulSr.s tour of the GapVax facility was featured Jan. 4, on theCMT Network as part of the new Orange County Choppersseries. Poborsky says Teutul Sr. was extremely impressed withGapVaxs operation.

He was amazed by the size of our facility, and thesophisticated equipment we use to build out trucks, saysPoborsky. That came across nicely in the episode. It wasfun, and great exposure for our company and the peoplewe have working here.

Poborsky says the feedback the company has receivedsince the episode aired has at times been overwhelming. The

company has picked up several hundred additional Facebookfans, and Poborsky has taken calls nearly every day fromcustomers excited to see GapVax featured on mainstream TV.

A lot of our loyal customers are motor heads at heart, many with hot rods and project bikes sitting in their garages, says Poborsky. They really related to this, and have let us knowthat. They cant wait to see the chopper at the Expo. Poborskysaid attendees are welcome to take photos with the bike.

As for the original trike project that brought Poborsky to theOrange County Choppers garage, its still a work in progress. The project has been handed over to Orange County Choppers, though, and Poborsky anticipates it being ready this spring.

Im excited about that one, too, says Poborsky. If it turns out anything like the chopper, were really infor something special.

Paul Teutul Sr. will make an
