Best BackHoe oPeRatoR to Be cRoWned In IndyBy Ed Wodalski

Association champions rom at least our states are in Indianapolis

this week, hoping to claim the 2012 National Backhoe Roe-D-Hoe title.

Iowa, Colorado, Minnesota and Delaware will be among the states

represented in the competition that tests the skills o backhoe operators

in three timed events. Contestants must drop three basketballs through

a hoop, move three bowling pins into PVC tubes and set a gol ball atop

a plastic cone all in less than two minutes. The state champions will

compete against the top 10 individuals posting the astest times rom the

preliminary rounds. Last years event drew more than 200 participants

over two days o preliminary competition.Casey Mallon, last years Iowa Onsite Wastewater Association

representative, went on to capture the 2011 national title, completing

all three events in 1 minute, 26 seconds. He also got to wear the

oot-wide champions belt and retain bragging rights as the

    Worlds Best Backhoe Operator.

Mallons winning strategy o swinging the excavator bucket in rom

the side and collecting all three basketballs at once rather than scooping

them up individually with the ront o the bucket made the dierence.

The seconds saved were the margin o victory over Josh Reading oMonroe, Ill., who turned in a time o 1:33. Tim Boswell o Fairax,

    Va., placed third in 1:41.

Mallons success has encouraged other associations to hold their

own competitions and select a representative or the national event,

says Eric Casey, executive director or the National Onsite Wastewater

Recycling Association, organizing agency or the Roe-D-Hoe.

Thats something we put an emphasis on, helping our state aliates

in particular put on Roe-D-Hoes that were sanctioning, Casey says.

It ensures theyre ollowing the same rules we use at the nationalcompetition.

Casey believes this years event will attract a record number

    o entries.

Bringing this competition to the Pumper Show has really ratcheted

up interest among installers and others who operate backhoes, he says.

Its a much better platorm and venue or providing exposure and getting

people involved. We like to say the person who wins the competition has

bragging rights as the best backhoe operator in the industry.

This years Roe-D-Hoe will be held in Hall D o the Indiana Conven-

tion Center a straight walk rom Registration across the show foor, next

to booth 2005 and IHI Compact Excavator Sales LLC, supplier o the mini

excavators or the event. Floor space or the competition is provided by

COLE Publishing, sponsor o the annual Pumper & Cleaner

    Environmental Expo International.

In addition to the new venue, this years competition will ollow

a new schedule, running rom 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday

with nals on Thursday morning, rather than the traditional Saturday.

To compete, entrants must be at least 13 years old and have a

signed parental release orm i under 18. There is a $5 ee and

contestants can compete as oten as they like on Tuesday and

Wednesday to perect their plan o attack. The top three nalists

Ready to Rock tHe eXPoRed-hot country singer Rodney Atkins promises a

great show at tonights Industry Appreciation Party

    By Jim Kneiszel

Rodney Atkins rose rom a hardscrabble beginning as a sickly

orphan to the heights o country music stardom, producing back-to-back

Billboard top country songs or 2006 and 2007 and continuing to churn

out popular anthems o real lie and love.

Atkins compelling American success story continues with his next

musical challenge: Entertaining the throngs at the 2012 Pumper & Clean-

er Environmental Expo International. Atkins will bring a bushel basket o

heartelt hits when he arrives on the stage tonight at the grand ballroom

o the JW Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis.

Atkins 7 p.m. perormance will ollow the ever-popular Industry

Appreciation Party with its estive atmosphere and 25-cent tap beers

which begins at 5 p.m. The evening o un caps o todays opening

o the Expo exhibits. The Industry Appreciation Party and Atkins live

perormance are included with ull Expo registration.

Atkins is well-known or a string o top 10 hits that started in 2003

with Honesty (Write Me a List) rom his rst album entitled Honesty.A amiliar voice on country radio or almost a decade, Atkins struck

gold in 2006 and 2007, when his singles, I Youre Going Through

Hell (Beore the Devil Even Knows) and Watching You, hit No. 1 and

were named the top country songs o the year by Billboard magazine.

rag t chWhile country music ans can hum along with Atkins many hits,

they might not be so amiliar with his inspiring personal story.

Ater being born in Knoxville, Tenn., in March 1969, he was putup or adoption and was twice returned to the Holston Methodist Home

or Children by prospective parents who couldnt deal with his numerous

illnesses. Though his ailments worsened, Margaret and Allan Atkins,

rom Cumberland Gap, Tenn., adopted the boy.

With his dedicated adoptive parents, Atkins thrived and became

interested in music during high school. Ater school, he eventually signed

a recording contract, but didnt release his rst album until Honesty. The

string o hits has never stopped, with the album I Youre Going Through

Hell gaining platinum status and producing additional No. 1 hits inThese Are My People and Cleaning This Gun (Come On In Boy).

Atkins ollowed with his third album Its America, with a single o the

same title, then 15 Minutes, and Chasin Girls heading up the charts.

In 2010, Atkins hit with Farmers Daughter, and hes currently tour-

ing with the lead-o single o his ourth album, the title cut Take a Back

Road, which hit No. 1 just a ew months ago.

A hpg haAlong the way, Atkins has ound it important to give back to others.

He is a spokesperson or the National Council or Adoption and oten

returns to the orphanage that helped him nd a loving amily. In 2011,

Atkins headlined the Nashville Give Back Concert to support tornado-

ravaged communities through the American Red Cross.

It is important or us to give to all o those in need. As an artist,

I have perormed in just about every town that has been hit by the many

storms and I eel that this concert is a great way to reach out and help

as many people as we can, he told the Nashville Convention & Visitors

Bureau, which helped promote the relie eort. We wanted to call

people to action to continue to support the American Red Cross Disaster

Relie Fund in any way that they can. While Atkins is devoted to causes he nds important, he hasnt taken

his oot o the accelerator, musically, either. According to his website,

Atkins has sold our million singles in the past ve years, and the sales

have been going viral or Take a Back Road. He credits the easy,

heartelt lyrics and laid-back, identiable message o the song.

Farmers Daughter was one o the craziest download songs

we had. It was peaking at 15,000 to 16,000 a week, Atkins says.

And now Back Road is knocking on 40,000 a week. That was a vali-

dation or me to ollow my heart Its one o those songs that, the rsttime I heard it I thought, Boy, that eels good. And then its catchy and

something you want to just crank it up. But then, the more you hear it,

you realize its not just a ditty; its about getting right with your

    soul, coming down to earth.

Back Road is about discovery both literally exploring the

beauty ound in your backyard countryside, and symbolically the

simple joys o amily and lie. The emotional tune and the album in

general present a winning ormula or the thoughtul Atkins.

Ive had some success with my songs, and youve got to sit backand ask yoursel, Why did these songs connect? With a lot o songs, the

approach is about how perect things are, or how messed up things are

Its one or the other, he explains. But or me, real lie is there are ups

and downs, and i you can, get both sides o that in a song.

And hes taken a reality check when it comes to love songs, too.

Atkins says he was never interested in recording conventional love songsuntil he ound several tunes that scratch beneath the surace o complex

relationships. He includes several o these on the latest album. And

theyre songs hardworking amily business owners who attend the Pumper

& Cleaner Expo can surely relate to.

Love is not all blue skies and no bills, he says. Its gutters leaking

and the cat messed in the replace. Its not convenient at all, and youve

got to make time or it thats the toughest part o it.

A tat tagLove songs, simple slice-o-lie songs, or just about anything Atkins

perorms, he promises an energetic live show. He likes to change up

the set list night ater night to keep the audience and band in tune and

engaged. Expo attendees can expect an edgy and un time with Atkins

    and his band.

Sometimes you just want to cut loose and have un, and you have

to do something unexpected You just have to kind o roll with it,

Atkins explains. Thats how I try to be on stage, and the shows get

better the more spontaneous they are, the less the band knows whatsgoing to happen.

Im low-key, but I get excited on stage. I think that i I didnt have

that outlet o playing live, Id be rustrated a lot, he says. Music was

denitely my savior. Its a way o saying things that, hopeully, because

its in the orm o music, will stay around awhile.
