breeding ewe section of £150 from two vendors Margaret Dennis, Boyton and Derek Daniel, North Petherwin

Similar entry again met a very fast trade for the time
of year, overall average on the day was 192.7p. The
well fleshed lambs selling to a premium, top per kilo
being 202p from two vendors Messrs LJ & LE Luxton
& Son, Venn Farm for a pen of 45 kilos £90.80 and
Paul and Aaron Vanstone, Bratton Clovelly 44 kilos
£89. Several pens £90 plus to a top of £94.50 for a pen of 51 kilos from Charlie Kivell, Buckland Brewer.
815 DRAFT EWES & RAMS
Another record entry for the new Holsworthy market of
over 800 on offer, over 500 of which were plain light
weight hill bred ewes. The overall trade for all breeds and
sizes again was very strong and still more could have been
sold. Top per head on the day was £97.50 from Messrs
FH Crocombe & Sons, Ashwater and Peter Uglow,
Egloskerry. Several Mules £75 to £80. Texel x ewes from
Messrs RJ Hill & Sons, Kingsett Farm realised £93.
602 BREEDING EWES
Again a large crowd of perspective buyers in attendance resulted in a faster trade for the stronger ewes. Several
pens of Suffolk x 2T over £140 and to a top of £150 from two vendors Margaret Dennis, Boyton for two pens
and Derek Daniel, Lower Wheatley for two pens. Texel x Mules topped at £135 from Shaun and Shirley Jones,
Chilla. Llyen 2T from Brian Furness, Langtree topped at £125. Rundle Weldhen of St Columb had a smart run
of North Country Mules which topped at £130.

A small entry saw a flying trade, top on the day was £72 from Darren Ridd, West Buckland.

A good entry of calves and after recent
high prices not surprising to see trade a
shade easier.
Top price of the day was £490 for a very
smart British Blue x bull from Messrs JG
& S Endacott from Halwill closely
followed by a Fleckvieh x bull making
£475 on behalf of Mr PJ Martin from
Buckland Filleigh. Another cracking run
from Messrs R & E Sizmur from Thorndon Cross saw the best
three British Blue x bulls make £450 a piece and also topping the
heifer section with four British Blue x heifers at £362. Mr SED
Rail from North Petherwin sold British Blue x bulls at £445 and
£435. A Montbeliarde x bull achieved £430 for Messrs JT & R
Pomeroy from Bradworthy and the pick of the Limousin x bulls
made £430 for Yeo Vale Farms from Bideford. Aberdeen Angus
x bulls to £408 for Messrs R & E Sizmur.
The top price heifers noted above next in line was Messrs PH Collins Partnership from Holsworthy selling
their best young British Blue x heifer for £338. A Charolais x heifer made £308 on behalf of Messrs WS Jose
& Son from North Tamerton with plenty of other good heifers selling around the £300 mark.
Friesian bulls seeing a reduction in demand at the bottom end but the best or stronger calves still seeing plenty
of demand with a top of £265 with another three at £245, £220 and £195 for Yeo Vale Farms and Mr A Horn
from Sourton made £185.

The winners of this week’s Genus £25 vouchers for the highest priced bull and heifer calves was won by Mr
KM Furse, Renson Farm, Ashwater with a Limousin x bull calf sired by Dauphin fetching £380, the heifer
section was won by Mr RWH Dilling, East Lydcott, Highampton with a British Blue sired by Rostnevor Gaberal
making £300.
Another excellent entry of quality stores all sold to another packed ring of buyers. Several consignments of 16
– 18 month old single suckled steers and heifers sold well. A consignment of Simmental and South Devon steers from Messrs RJ & SM Ovenell & Son, Langtree saw 15 month old Simmental steers to £1120, South
Devon steers again 15 months old to £1090, averaging £1044.
Smaller 14 month old Limousins from Dave Barnes, North Tamerton sold to £870 with others at £860.
Stronger Continentals topped at £1180 for a 20 month old Charolais from Messrs HM Martyn & Co, Bridgerule
with other Beef Shorthorn steers from Mr P North, Great Beer to £1170. 24 month old British Blue x Holsteins
from Mr AJ Palmer, Corfcott to £1122 and more could have been sold.
Younger steers and heifers saw several bunches showing signs of weather although plenty of buyers still
desperate for this age of cattle. Another strong Holstein trade, stronger Holsteins to £982 for two from Mr
NT Shere, Bradworthy. British Friesian types to £970 for four from Messrs AH Johns & Son, Milton Damerel.
Younger Holsteins in short supply plenty 14 month old plus steers £600.

This week’s winner of the Lark Plant award for top price store cattle goes to Messrs HM Martyn & Co, Borough, Bridgerule for
a 20 month old Charolais steer reaching £1180.

Best beef cows topped at £1260 for a 13 year old Simmental cow with a 1 month old Charolais calf at foot
from Mr G Lewis, Meadowbrook. A consignment of Sussex x Channel Island cows with one month old Shorthorn calves from Messrs A & L Furse, Renson topped at £840 with others at £820
A short entry saw Ayrshire cows to £495 from Messrs AR & DL Walters, West Berriow with other older
leaner cows to £450 from Messrs JH Heal & Son, Great Cudworthy.
Top price this week was 186p/kg for a well finished Limousin heifer from Mr PJ Harris, Bridgerule with steers
from the same farm at 180p/kg topping the day at £1317. Simmental steers from Mr S Hopper, Rydon sold to
£1348. Smaller Native Hereford heifers from Mr D Gerry, Ashwater topped at 164p/kg, more required.
A superb entry of good meat cows this week saw a good trade, strong heavy Continentals from Mr B Cowell,
Wood Farm topped at 150p/kg for a 832 kilo cow realising £1248 with their 12 cows averaging £1056. Older
beef cows from Messrs J Davey & Sons, Heath Park topped at £1002 for a 748 kilo Saler cow at 134p/kg.
Holsteins topped at 135p/kg for a 726 kilo cow realising £980 from Messrs NC & RM Skinner, East Croft,
Halwill.
