Principal’s News Federal Election Mini Market and Working Bee The election weekend was a huge weekend for the PPS school community. On election Saturday our P&C organised and coordinated a Mini Market with many stalls, including several food and second hand book stalls. There were a large number of parent volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the day in order to raise funds for our school. The day was a great success and a wonderful community fund raiser. I’d like to thank all of the parent volunteers and Sally Seymour, the P&C event coordinator for all their hard work and dedication in supporting our school. Similarly, the following morning, at our school working bee there was a big turnout of parent and student volunteers. The sun was shining and lots of hard work was done around our school grounds. Parents and children weeded gardens, trimmed hedges, stained and oiled timber seats and tables, deep cleaned toilet areas, tidied up the sand pit and spread extra sand over the new synthetic grass areas. It was a fantastic effort and the school grounds look fabulous. I’d like to thank all the parents and children who attended the working bee for all their hard work on Sunday. A special mention also to our school’s general assistant, Mr Burke for all his hard work and dedication with assisting in the preparation of and support of, not only the working bee but also the election mini market. 2019 Mungo Youth Project (MYP) Student Leader Conference In Week 2 of this term, our 12 Year 6 student leaders together with Mrs Herbert, Mrs Venter and me attended the 2019 MYP Student Leadership Conference in Lake Mungo National Park. Lake Mungo is in the heritage listed Willandra Lakes area in far south-western NSW. It is a desert environment and an area which holds significant spiritual and cultural connection to the land for Aboriginal people. 230 students from many city, rural and remote rural schools across NSW and Mildura attended this conference. The children and teachers camped for 3 nights and participated in a broad and rich 3 day conference program which included workshops in Aboriginal languages, an archaeological dig, mega fauna, basket weaving, Aboriginal children’s games, spear making and storytelling as well as China Walls and Wildlife National Parks Education and sheep station tours. The children also interacted with students from very diverse communities and had a camping experience. This unique and amazing experience is one which will stay with our students for many years to come. Our students were fantastic throughout the whole trip, an absolute pleasure to take away and represented our school with pride. I’d like to thank Mrs Herbert and Mrs Venter for the high level care demonstrated towards the children and for volunteering their time to provide this opportunity to our student leaders. 2J Assembly Item Last Friday 2J presented their assembly item at the K-2 Assembly. The children thoroughly entertained their audience with an impressive dance routine as well as an adaptation of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’. The students also each spoke about their favourite area of learning at school. It was a truly spectacular performance; I was most impressed with the children’s confidence on stage. Congratulations 2J on a wonderful assembly item. I’d like to thank Miss Jones for preparing the students so beautifully for their item.

If your child will be turning 5 before July 2020 and you live in the area, Kindergarten enrolments are now open. Please contact the school office for an enrolment form for your child. We will have a parent information session late Term 3 and an additional session in Term 4, including orientation sessions for the 2020 Kindergarten students. The specific dates will be provided in the coming weeks.

Lost property continues to be an ongoing issue here at Pymble Public School. All clothing, lunch containers and drink bottles should be clearly labelled with the student's name and class. Over the years, volunteer parents have spent a lot of time sorting and returning lost items to classes, only to find that two days later, the lost property box is overflowing again. Please remind your children to take care of, and value their belongings. Should an item go missing, please encourage your children to have a look in the lost property box under the school hall. Helping our children to become responsible is a skill that will help them to succeed now and in the long term.

The P&C and our school are working collaboratively to donate our ‘Earn and Learn’ stickers to one of our City Country Alliance partner schools, Gol Gol Public School. This is in recognition of the substantial contributions Gol Gol Public School has made in assisting with the coordination of the Mungo Youth Conference. Thank you to the P&C and also to Miss Newell and Mrs Kingston for assisting with this initiative. Please label your sticker sheets at home with 'Gol Gol Public School'.

SCHOOL TOUR TERM 2

Monday 24 June,10.00-10.30am

Year 6 Rubbish Sort Last week, the Year 6 students emptied out the contents of the red bins from around the school to analyse what kind of rubbish was being put in there. Considering we have 5 different types of bins for our rubbish; hard plastics, paper/cardboard, compost, 10c Return and Earn as well as landfill, it was surprising to see the amount of recyclable material that had been put in the red bin. This kicked off our learning into sustainability this term. Below is a persuasive piece of writing to Pymble Public School, by one of the Year 6 students. The Year 6 teachers, Miss Hann, Mr Maatouk and Mrs Hiley

A letter to Pymble – written by Lydia

With multiple pieces of mouldy cheese sandwiched between soggy bread, we ventured into the unknown. We, the Year Six Scavengers, sorted through the rubbish unaware of what to expect. 331 students with just a few bins, every recess and every lunch time, not a pretty sight. We dug and dug through the fowl-smelling depths, somewhat confused by why there were bananas in a bin that was inevitably going to be sent to landfill, when there is genuinely a compost bin three centimetres away. There’s, despite the common belief, actually a reason why the bins are not just spread aimlessly in the school – it’s for your convenience. Whilst various clean up initiatives take place, the finger goes to you. Something needs to change. Could you find a place in your mind, to just imagine what it would be like to breathe in and inhale your sandwich that you had for lunch two years ago, simply because your arm just ‘could not reach the right bin’. An, almost unbelievable fact, states that ‘Australia creates 48 million tonnes of waste every year’. Currently, the average person lives to about eighty, so if you do live to eighty in Australia, you would have created 12 800 tonnes (according to my calculations) of waste, a lost, incomprehensible number, most of which will go to landfill if things don’t change. But how about we change something for the better, for us right now and for the generations to come. One step at a time, so ‘Act Locally, Think Globally.’

P&C News

Dear PPS Families,

What a terrific weekend our school has enjoyed. In addition to the perfect weather we have had a very successful election day “mini market” on Saturday and equally effective working bee on Sunday.

Thanks to 93 individual volunteers on Saturday who collectively cooked 650 sausages and 240 bacon and egg rolls, sold hundreds of books, cakes and dumplings, the P&C is thrilled to report that we earned our school a total in excess of $5,500!! What an extraordinary effort!

Thank you to every family who baked a cake, donated books or plants, played an instrument and to our Korean and Chinese communities who hand-made delicious dumplings and sushi rolls. We’d also like to acknowledge the many parents not featured on a doodle poll who ferried extra children to sport or looked after PPS kids whilst their parents volunteered, shared our brochures on social media, displayed our signs in their shops and of course bought far too many cupcakes and sausages themselves. It was this collaborative and community effort which meant that Saturday was not only an outstanding financial success but also a terrific community event whereby the whole school came together to make a difference.

As if Saturday weren’t enough, a further 45 volunteers backed it up on Sunday to lend a hand at the working bee. Benches and tables were painted, sand strewn, pathways pressure hosed and 427 lost handballs and bey-blades were found by the weeding team. The whole school clearly looks much better for your efforts; thank you. Special mention must go to PPS families who own and operate “Tile Rescue” who generously donated their time, equipment and materials to give the Kindy block bathrooms a much needed clean. If you think your tiles could do with a rescue too, their details can be found below.

Thanks PPS – we look forward to seeing you at our next event.

The P&C Committee

P&C meeting wrap up – 8th May 2019

Our P&C Committee members braved a very cold May night for its 4th meeting of the year on Wednesday 8th May. Whilst there was plenty on the agenda, the main items which generated discussion were ideas around the 2nd hand uniform shop, a summary of the Mother’s Day stall and the Woolworths “earn & learn” stickers.

Our 2nd-hand Uniform Shop Committee members, Lisa Ashton and Keri Garnys reported on yet another successful opening of the 2nd hand uniform shop at the start of term 2. The newly available EFTPOS facilities appeared to have been a very welcome addition; nearly half of all transactions were completed electronically. This facility should be available at all future sales. The down-side of such a successful sale is that the shop is now running VERY low on good-quality stock items. Families past and present are urged to donate any used uniform items to this great community service. All proceeds made from sales are directed straight back to the P&C, which in turn provide services and equipment for your child’s benefit. Watch this space for a re-usable bag in which to place your donated items.

Another item concerning the 2nd hand uniform shop, was the notion of a “uniform exchange” – a facility whereby people could give a commission payment to the shop for selling uniforms on their behalf. This might encourage more donations to the shop if donors were able to keep some of the proceeds themselves to invest in new uniform purchases. Lisa and Keri are currently drafting some options around this idea and would welcome any feedback or expertise in this area – please get in touch at [email protected] with your ideas.

The P&C Committee thanked all the year 4 parents and other volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make the annual Mother’s Day stall happen. The P&C tried a new idea this year of incorporating fresh flowers into the gift selection. Whilst lots of children enjoyed the new option, there has been some feedback that some children were disappointed to have missed out on the more traditional gifts and that the flowers weren’t as easy to transport as hoped. The P&C Liaison Sub-committee will review the stall in conjunction with school staff and report back shortly to the P&C on the best way to manage the complex logistics surrounding this much-loved event.

Also on the agenda was the ever-popular Woolworths promotion of “Earn & Learn” stickers. Many parents have asked what is PPS doing this year? Following the school’s suggestion, the P&C agreed that whilst our school will collect the stickers, we will donate them, and the associated resources, to one of our City Country Alliance schools, Gol Gol Public School. This recognizes the substantial contributions Gol Gol Public School has made in assisting with the coordination of the recent Mungo Youth Conference. It is also a great way for our children to recognize that not all schools are as fortunate as Pymble Public or have as ready access to resources as we do. Please place any stickers you collect in the boxes located at the front office.

The meeting concluded with an update from Sally Seymour on the upcoming Election Day BBQ & from Cameron Mason on the Working Bee. Please join me at our next meeting to be held on Wednesday 12th June where we’ll be talking about what to do with all the money raised at these great events!
