Floral Magic

BY: M.L. Santovec

Roses may be red and violets may be blue, but today’s brides have a riot of colors and a pleth-ora of styles to choose from for their big day.

Today’s bride is look-ing for “casual elegance” rather than a highly struc-tured, rigid cascade, said Tim humphrey, owner of humphrey Floral in Fort At-kinson. Wedding bouquets tend to be a “little looser,” although cascades add drama to contempo-rary gowns.

Broach bouquets crafted from vintage jewelry are the rage for brides seeking a touch of formality with some glitz. An al-ternative? “Rhinestones can be added to

the bouquet for a bit of dazzle,” he said. Sandy Ley of Sullivan’s Sandy Ley Bridal and Floral has created a bouquet from sea-shells for a beach wedding.

Flower girls are waltzing down the aisle with more than baskets. “We’re seeing some creativity as far as what

the flower girl is carrying,” said humphrey. This in-

cludes hollowed out miniature ghost pumpkins decorated with ribbons for an October wedding, an upturned miniature Stetson cowboy hat for a western-themed event and a terra cotta pot filled with flower petals and tied with gingham ribbon for a

casual service.

Flower preferences include hydrangeas, calla lilies and ros-es, said humphrey. Gerbera dai-sies are popular for more casual weddings while cymbidium or-chids are making a comeback.

Tables decorated with Mason jars filled with wild flowers re-flects a trend toward thriftiness on the part of some brides, said Dawn Vater, owner of Garden

path Floral in Watertown. Natu-ral and wild flowers are also popular.

peggy Bare, owner of Wine and Roses in Jefferson, also sees requests for lilies, roses and gerbera daisies woven into more traditional bouquets. “Whites and pinks have been popular,” she said.

While sparkle and glitter highlighted 2012 and will con-tinue to be popular this year, Vater noted a trend toward in-corporating camouflage among some of her brides.

purple, aubergine and plum are the go-to colors. At Green-ery the Florist in Watertown, some brides are choosing a 1950s teal, while Sandy Ley notes that some of her brides have reported a resurgence in avocado and forest green.

Gone are the days when every wedding reception has to have large floral center-pieces. One of the best ways to emphasize personal style is through alternative recep-tion table centerpieces.

here are some examples of creative and elegant centerpieces:

place a large amount of rock salt on the center of the table. place neutral colored candles in varying sizes, from pillars to tea lights, in the rock salt. Keep lit the entire reception for a simply elegant look. To enhance an Asian-themed reception use large, clear, square-shaped bowls filled with smooth rocks, a small amount of distilled water and three to four pieces of bamboo in varying heights. To create a stunning look fill a large vase

or bowl with distilled water and a large floater candle. Use coordinating flow-er petals to place around the outside of the vase or bowl. My favorite idea for a rectangu-lar table centerpiece is to take an inexpensive bedroom door mirror and place it down in the center of the table. You can paint to sides of the mirror to coordinate with your wedding colors. place large and small candles in the same color on the mirror. Sprinkle silver or gold confetti on the mirror once the candles are in place. The effect is both, eye-popping and dramatic. I have used this numerous times on my coffee table at cocktail parties. It's always a big hit with my guests!

The style of the bridal gown also plays a major roll in the selection of jewelry. Many of today's most popular gowns are strapless or have low neck-lines. This is a perfect style to showcase a wonderful neck-

lace and earrings. Gowns with high necklines may be better of to forgo the necklace and concentrate on the perfect ear-rings.

Necklace LengthThe Choker: One to three strands worn close around the

neck is the most classic ver-sion and works well with a jewel or bateau neckline. If too much skin is showing it may get lost.

The Collar: Made up of three or more strands that fit securely around the middle neck. This Victorian style looks lovely with a plunging or strapless neckline.

The princess: perfect for strap-less gowns, this length falls below the hollow of the neck in front -- perfect support for a pendant. This style is most often 16" and looks great with almost every bridal gown neck-line, except a high neckline.

The Matinee: Longer than the princess but shorter than the

Opera, this style hits the top of the bust and looks great with a bateau, jewel, or a lower neckline with sheer fabric cov-ering the décolletage area. It shouldn't hit the top of the dress because then the neck-lace and the dress are fighting for attention.

The Opera: This long single strand falls below the bust and looks classic with a very high neckline. Not often a good choice for bridal gowns or bridesmaid dresses.

Other things to consider:Keep your earrings simple if your necklace is large or grand. Bracelets can be worn with sleeveless, short-sleeve, and three-quarter sleeve gowns.

A watch can be worn if it is an unusual antique or family heir-loom, but most watches are not appropriate wedding jewelry for the bride or the bridesmaids.

Choice of EarringKeep this in mind when selecting earring styles:A button earring accentuates a round face. A dangle earring widens a narrow face. A squared earring adds interest to a long face. If you are wearing a Tiara you may not want to wear earrings. If you are not wearing a necklace you may want your earrings to be larger. It is all a matter of balance.

Wearing a TiaraWant to feel like a princess?! Spend your special day crowned by a glittering tiara. But consider keeping the other jewelry simple, small pearl earrings and a simple necklace or let your tiara be the point of focus and leave off any extra jewelry.

Once the RSVps are in, you have to deal with seating your guests. This article aims to help you do just that.

Most banquet tables are either round or rectangular and seat eight people. Some banquet facilities have long rectangular tables that can seat up to 20 on each side. This article will help you seat your guests, regard-less of the table.

You will need a large work area, a dining room table is suitable. On a large piece of cardboard, draw a rough outline of the room setup. Draw the location of all tables, i.e. head table, dj table, cake table, etc.

Buy post-it notes in different colors. Assign the bride’s family one colour, the groom’s family one colour and friends one colour. If you want to seat your guests boy-girl-

boy-girl, you can assign different colors to women and men however be warned, this could be more trouble than it’s worth.

Once the colors have been chosen, write each guest’s name on the appropriate coloured post-it. Keep each colour togeth-er, placing each note in a row. Keep couples

together. You are now ready to start seating people.

Depending on the family situation, the tables closest to the head table are reserved for immediate family. how many tables depends on the family. If neither par-

ents are divorced, this will be two tables but if divorces have occurred, there will be more tables. Divorced couples should never be sat at the same table. It is uncomfortable for them, their spouses/partners, anyone else sit-ting at the table, and confusing for other guests.

The bride’s family traditionally gets the best table. Start from the most important and work your way down. If the bride’s parents are still married, start with the mother and father. Seat them so

they will be facing the head table, you don’t want them having to turn in their chairs during speeches.

Continued. from pg. 14....

Now seat the bride’s grandparents. If the officiant is attending the reception, seat him/her at this table. If there is room, seat the bride’s siblings and their significant others.

If the bride’s parents are divorced, allow each parent to host a table. Seat the appropriate grandparents with each parent. Depending on family relations, you can sit siblings with either parent or allow them to host their own table.

Seat the groom’s family in similar fashion.

You may now seat the rest of your families. Aunts and uncles, cousins, siblings, close friends of the family should be seated as close to the head table as possible.

If children are invited to the reception, do you wish to seat them with their parents or at a special “children’s table?” If you think the children can behave, then seat them together. If some are more rambunctious than others, seat them with their parents. If

you opt to have a children’s table, do not sit any adults with them. This happened to a friend of mine. It’s been five years and she is still insulted.

Now you must seat your friends. Arrange the post-it notes into groups of friends and seat them accordingly. It is likely that you will have some guests who won’t fit into a particular group, try to seat them with guests whom you think they will share common interests. Don’t sit a shy friend with the rowdy group with whom you went to high school.

If the MC or other speech makers are not seated at the head table, try to seat them so they can easily get to the podium.

Don’t sit elderly guests near the dj table/speakers.If the tables are long rectangles, seat family close to the head table and progress gradu-ally towards friends. Friends know they don’t get the best table. If you think creating a seating chart is too much work and you want to let your guests

sit wherever they choose, please reconsider. I have heard countless horror stories from people who went to weddings and had to fight for a seat, or sat amongst complete strangers with whom they had nothing in common. Setting aside an evening to take your guests comfort into consideration will be greatly appreciated.

Your wedding is about six months to a year away. Do you know what to do and when to do it?Here is a timeline that specifies the approximate time tasks should be completed. Use this list as a guide.

Wedding Planner Schedule

____ 1. Mail the invitations.____ 2. Get the marriage license.____ 3. Finalize the honeymoon plans.

____ 1. Announce your engagement. Have someone throw you a party and send an engagement announcement to your local newspaper.

____ 2. Decide on what kind of wedding. Less formal weddings are usually held in the morning or early afternoon. Late afternoon and evening weddings are traditionally more formal.

____ 3. Decide on the time of day. Are you prepared to feed your guests dinner or do you want a simple ceremony with cake and punch only? The time of day that you choose will dictate the food choices.

____ 4. Choose a location. Remember to take into consideration what the weather could be like on your wedding day.

____ 5. Pick a date. Do this as soon as possible so that your bridal party and faraway family can begin making arrangements for motels and scheduling time away from their jobs.

____ 6. Set a budget. This is so important. Discuss it carefully between the two of you and your respective families.

____ 7. Select the bridal party. It is important to do this as soon as possible so these special people can set aside time to fulfill their duties and roles in your wedding.

____ 8. Choose your colors. Your flowers, attire, linens and cake will reflect your choice. Since you have to shop for these items fairly far in advance, it's important that you are rock-solid on your color decision.

____ 9. Choose and order the bridal gown, bridesmaids' gowns and accessories. Choose wisely and stay within your budget.

____ 10. Start planning the honeymoon. Discuss this with the groom and let him make some of the major choices.

____ 11. Begin your bridal registry. Visit your favorite stores and choose items that you will need to start your life together.

____ 12. Select the caterer, photographer, florist and musicians. Keep their phone numbers handy.

____ 13. Start planning the reception. Secure a hall, hotel or whatever suits you for your reception area.

____ 14. Start your premarital counseling. Some church-es require this for a marriage.

____ 15. Choose and order the wedding rings.

three Months

____ 1. Complete the guest list.____ 2. Plan to have both mothers select their dresses.

The mother of the groom will often wait for the mother of the bride to select her dress.

____ 3. Finalize the reception. If you are going to rent anything, do it now.

____ 4. Make reservations for the honeymoon. Remember to tell them you will be newlyweds. You'll be surprised how many perks you will get.

____ 5. Confirm the dates and times with the florist, caterer, photographer, musicians and church.

____ 6. Discuss transportation to and from the wedding and reception sites.

____ 7. Order the wedding cake.____ 8. Choose and order the tuxes.____ 9. Schedule the bridesmaids' dress fittings. This

would also be a good time to choose and dye the shoes if necessary.

one Month____ 1. Reserve accommodations for the guests. ____ 2. Record gifts received and send thank-you notes.

Many couples think that they have to wait to send those thank-you notes. Get them done as soon as the gifts begin to arrive.

____ 3. Plan the rehearsal and dinner. This is the respon-sibility of the groom and his family but all should work together on this.

____ 4. Purchase the gifts for the bridal party. Brides often buy inexpensive earrings or necklaces that the bridesmaids can wear to the wedding. Popular choices for the groomsmen are money clips, keychains or ball caps.

More often than not, couples spend so much of their preparation time on the wedding details that they tend to overlook the specifics of their honey-moon.

Set a time to sit down and talk it over. You don't need to allot more than a day or two to do this. Most couples tend to forgo after-wedding prepara-tions because of the erroneous belief that it will take so much time from their hectic schedule for before-the-wedding preparation. In fact, you can discuss the matter during your free time to-gether such as during lunch or dinner. The important thing is that you have allotted a particular time to talk about your ideas on

where and how you want to spend your first few days or weeks as a married couple. This will give you the right mind-set to focus on just one topic - your honeymoon! Agree on a budget. Weddings can be costly and you don't want to worry about your fi-nances during your first year as a couple. So, set a budget that you can afford and

not a budget that you wish you had. This amount will guide you in choosing where you can go, where you can stay, what en-

tertainment options you can enjoy and what types of restaurants you can visit. Remem-ber, you don't have to break the bank to have a wonderful honeymoon. All it takes is good planning and a touch of creativity on your part.

Discuss where you want to celebrate love and romance together. It is important to see eye to eye on your destina-tion. You want to have a great time as a couple, so you want to consider each others interests when choosing a honeymoon spot.

You may also want to recall the plac-es you've visited together and con-sider the sites that gave both of you much fun and excitement. It could be a tropical beach, a winter getaway, a glamour camping trip or an African safari.

Book everything in advance. Early birds do not just get to save but also get to have more time to enjoy. Continued on pg. 23
