Planning Your Wedding

You are embarking on one of the most happiest times in your life

and the Wedding Protector Plan® is excited to be on this journey

with you. Often times, wedding planning can seem like a daunting

task for couples. Regardless of where you are in the planning

process, we are here to help. Our 12+ month wedding checklist will

guide you through the planning process and help you manage your

time right up to the big day!

12+ Months

Sit down with all involved parties to discuss your perfect day. Who is going to be financially involved? Determine your overall wedding budget and approximate number of guests.

Decide on where you want the wedding to be held. Don’t forget to consider the weather, time of year, travel plans, and other considerations.

Once you know where your wedding will be, then the search for the ceremony and reception venues can begin. Determine your perfect wedding date based on the availability of your chosen venue(s).

Put together your actual guest list, taking into consideration budget, venue capacity, and family invitees.

Insure your sparkling engagement ring on a separate insurance policy.

Begin your vendor research by starting with selecting a photographer and determining whether you will need the assistance of an event planner.

Start a Pinterest board of inspiration for your wedding theme, style, and details.

10-12 Months

Plan an engagement party but do keep in mind, those that are invited should also be invited to the wedding.

Choose your wedding party attendants.

Create your wedding website. This will provide guests with all of the necessary information for your big day.

Begin shopping for your wedding dress and purchase it no later than 10 months until the big day. This will allow for shipping and alterations.

Attend a local wedding show for inspiration and vendor research.

Now that your venue(s) has been booked, purchase wedding insurance for peace of mind for the total financial value of your wedding. Also consider if liability insurance is needed or required by the venue’s contract.

8-10 Months

Continue to research your wedding professionals: Interview your musicians/DJ, florist, caterer, décor, videographer, and officiant. Don’t forget to get each contract in writing and review thoroughly before signing.

Now that you have a wedding date, tell everyone to save it by mailing out Save the Dates. This is especially important if you’re tying the knot during a holiday weekend or away from home at a destination wedding.

Research local accommodations for your out-of-town guests and set up a hotel block.

Schedule dress fittings once your wedding dress arrives. Be sure to bring the appropriate undergarments and accessories (shoes, veil, belt, etc.)

Begin shopping for bridesmaid dresses. Order special attire once decisions have been made. Advise your bridesmaids of fittings and alterations schedules.

Do you need rental items such as chairs, tables, linens, and/or a tent? Secure the rental items needed.

5-7 Months

Begin planning for your dream honeymoon while keeping in mind of necessities such as passports, visas, and immunizations.

Attend several cake tastings and decide on the flavors and designs you wish for your perfect wedding cake. Once decided, order your cake.

Purchase your wedding ring bands and have them insured on your engagement ring policy.

Formalwear for the groom, groomsmen, and fathers should now be ordered/rented. Include specific instructions on where and when to be measured for attire.

Set-up a gift registry at three to four stores, making sure to include items in all price ranges.

Assist the mothers and grandparents with selecting special attire.

4 Months

date: ______Finalize honeymoons plans including airfare, lodging, travel insurance, and transportation.

Order formalwear for the flower girl and ring bearer.

Plan where you will spend the night before the wedding as well as the night of the wedding, keeping in mind any special accommodations if you are leaving for your honeymoon the day after the wedding.

Attend pre-wedding counseling that might be required by your religion or state. This is also a good time to research your states requirements for obtaining a marriage license, such as blood tests or proof of residence.

This is a great time to start researching and purchasing wedding day decorations such as the unity candle, guest book, table numbers, cake topper, favors, toasting flutes, cake cutter, etc.

Meet with your caterer to do the final tasting and decide on the menu, including alcohol.

Order invitations and stationary. Remember to weigh the final invitation suite for correct postage. Purchase wedding themed stamps.

3 Months

Hire wedding day transportation for the wedding party, family, and guests.

Begin shopping for your gifs for your wedding party, parents, and your spouse-to-be.

Research a location for the rehearsal dinner and morning-after brunch.

Attend your wedding showers. Mail your ‘thank you’ cards soon after with wedding postage.

Finalize guest list and mail invitations 10 weeks prior to the big day.

Schedule hair and make-up trials and then finalize the stylist team for your wedding party.

2 Months

Make sure your vendor team is now complete. Make note of outstanding balances and the respective due dates.

This is a good time to select the readings you wish to have at the ceremony and/or reception and who will be reading them.

If you’re writing your own vows, begin penning those. Confirm the ceremony and vows with your officiant.

Review your insurance information with your fiancé such as your auto, home, and health insurance to see what documents must be updated once you are legally married.

Do you have plans for something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue?

Prepare welcome bags for your guests staying at the host hotel. Compile a list of who receives a bag with their check-in date to the hotel for convenience. Be sure to include directions to the venue(s) and things to do and see in the area.

1 Month

Apply for your marriage license and confirm who will mail it back to the state after your wedding.

Select the music for the ceremony including the processional and recessional.

Review and finalize a song list with the DJ/musicians.

Provide your shot list (including family names) to your photographer to insure all must-have photos are taken.

Unless you have hired a wedding planner, touch base with all your vendors to ensure everything is still in order and nothing major has changed. You will need to provide a basic timeline of your wedding day.

2 Weeks

Have your last dress fitting. Ask the dress boutique to steam your dress as you will pick it up the following week.

Begin packing for your honeymoon and finalizing plans while you are out of town such as arranging for pet care, stopping the mail, and house sitting.

Have your Maid of Honor call those who have not yet RSVP’d. It’s time to have the menus, place cards, and ceremony programs printed.

Assign a family member or friend to collect the wedding gifts and personal belongings after the wedding for safe keeping until you return from your honeymoon.

Determine the order of your wedding party for the ceremony including processional and recessional.

1 Week

Provide your caterer, venue, and rental company your final guest count. Don’t forget your vendors in your final count.

Plan your reception seating chart and decide how you would like it to be displayed.

Confirm arrival times of each vendor and provide this and their contact information to your venue manager.

Arrange transportation for out-of-town guests.

Deliver welcome bags to the hotel for distribution to guests upon check-in.

Keep an eye on the weather as it could disrupt your wedding day plans and travel for your guests.

Don’t forget to tip your vendors. Place tips in separately marked envelopes and provide to your wedding planner or Maid of Honor to distribute at the end of the wedding.

2-3 Days

Pick up your wedding dress and have it steamed. Be sure to keep it out of your dress bag until your big day.

Have the groom and groomsmen attend final fittings and pick up attire.

Rehearse the ceremony and meet with your wedding party, officiant, immediate family, and ceremony readers to iron out details. Provide the marriage license to the officiant.
