tallbeganwithasinglebride.

Iwastwenty-twoyearsold,andmyroommategotengaged.Despitebeingclose,shedidn’taskmetobeinherbridalparty,andIwasstillyoungenoughtobedisappointed by that type of thing. Looking to be involved in some way, Iofferedtoaddressherinvitationenvelopes—alltwohundredofthem—andshegraciouslyaccepted.

Once I had addressed the envelopes for my roommate, my dad offered my“services”toacoworkerforhisdaughter’swedding.Soonafter,mysister’sbosswas getting married, so I did her envelopes as well, and this succession of“orders”mademerealize thatcalligraphycouldbecomeacareerpossibility. Itallhappenedsoquickly!

Ihadalwaysconsideredmyselfartisticandlovedallofmyartclasses,butafterfalling short of passing my high school AP Art exam, I had put art on thebackburner to earn a BA in business. However, by offering to address myroommate’s envelopes—and having no idea what I was getting into—IunknowinglylaunchedLauraHooperCalligraphy.

Fast-forwardtomorethanadecadelater:Ihavenowworkedwiththousandsofclientsworldwideon their stationeryneeds forweddings, showers,events,andmore. Laura Hooper Calligraphy has grown to offer not only handwrittenservices, but also full wedding stationery design and printing; an online shopfeaturingprintedpartygoodsandcalligraphysupplies;andeducationforotherslookingtolearntheart.

PREPPINGTHENIB

Whennibsarebrandnew,theyhaveacoatingonthemfromthemanufacturer.Thecoatingisappliedtoprotectthenibsfromoxidizationorotherdamagethatcouldoccurduringshipping,andmustberemovedpriortouse.Thereareafewmethods foraccomplishing this, suchas runninga flameover thenib,but thiscanaffecttheflexibilityofthemetal.Youcanalsolickyournibs,butthistastesaboutasappetizingasitsounds!Weliketodipthenibintoourink—carefullycoveringthevent,butnottouchingtheflange—andthengentlywipetheinkoffcompletelywithasoft,cleancloth(orevenabasicpapertowel)onboththetopandundersidesofthenib.Thiscanberepeatedacoupleoftimestoensurethecoating is fully removed. Another option is to wipe the nib with a Q-tip andtoothpaste or rubbing alcohol. You’ll know the coating is still present if youattempttowriteandtheinkbeadsuponthenib.Ifthat’sthecase,justdipandwipethenibagaintoremoveanyexcessresidue.

Oneofthedefiningcharacteristicsofpointed-pencalligraphyisthevariationofthickandthinlinesachievedbychangingtheamountofpressureonyournibasyouwrite.The thinupstrokes,knownas finehairlines,arecreatedwithaverydelicate touch of upward movement on your paper. The thick downstrokes,knownasheavy swells, are achievedbyapplyingenoughpressure toopen thetinesofyournibsotheinkhasaheavierflow.

It iswhile creatingdownstrokes thatyouwillmost likelynotice thatyourpenhasrunoutofink.Thisusuallyhappensafterthreeorfourletters.Youwillsee

thattherearetwofinelines,createdbyyouropentines,withnothingbetween.Itwilllookasifthelettersarehollow.Thisiscalledrailroadingduetoitsobvioussimilaritiestorailroadtracks.Youwanttostopassoonasyounoticethis,redip,andcarefullyfillintheemptyspaceandcontinuewithyourdownstroke.Thereisnobackspace inhandwrittenwork,soyouwant togetused to filling inandcontinuingon!

Ifyourinkisn’tflowingafteryoujustdippedit,itislikelythatasmallamounthasdriedontheverytipofyournib,preventingtheinkfromflowingout.Youcangentlytouchthetiptowetinktore-moistenthetipareaor,ifthatdoesnotwork,youshouldwipeyournibcleananddipagain.Youdonotwanttoredipintoyourinkwhenyoustillhaveinkremaininginthereservoir,asthiscanleadtotoomuchinkaccumulatinginyournibandseepingupintoyourflange.

APPLYINGTHECORRECTAMOUNTOFPRESSUREIfyournibisdiggingintothepaper,catchingandsplatteringink,youaremostlikely applying too much pressure on your upward strokes. You want todelicately glide upwards across the page to achieve a fine hairline for yourupstrokes. Envision pulling the nib upward, gliding across the surface of thepaper,versuspushing itupwardsand into thepaper.Whencreatingcurvesandloops especially, you want to be sure you release any heavy pressure beforeleadingintothecurve,oryournibcancatchandsplatterink.

Additionally,youwanttowriteslowlyenoughtoallowyourselftimetoactuallychangetheamountofpressurewithwhichyouarewriting.Generally,youwantless pressure for fine upstrokes andmore pressure for heavy downstrokes.Onyourdownstrokes,youneedtoapplyenoughpressuretoliterallyopenthetinesonyournib toallow the ink to flowout ina thickerswell.
