Graphic Novel: A collected edition of multiple comic

books usually telling one complete story arc. Testament is such an example—originally a 5-part series released between Nov 2008-March 2009.

Although comic books have been looked down upon in the past, graphic novels are quickly becoming a respected literary genre.

Pictures and Literature: Pictures books are the first forms of

literature we’re exposed to as children.

Illustrated classics and comic book adaptations of novels used in elementary and middle schools.

Comics used to present advanced academic concepts (psychology, philosophy, lit theory) for higher education.

Reading a Graphic Novel: Closure: the mind’s ability to observe parts

but perceive a whole.

Change, movement, and motion are all created by closure in comics.

Thus, the reader becomes an active participant in the action of the comic genre.

Reading a Graphic Novel: Gutter: the blank space between panels on

a comic page in which closure takes place.

In the gutter, the mind takes separate images and transforms them into a single idea. “Connects the dots.”

Similar to something happening off-stage or off-screen during a play or film.

Reading a Graphic Novel: Sound: since comics are a visual

medium, unique sound effects and type fonts are used to convey sounds and dialogue. Whispers in grey.

Onomatopoeia: besides using words that mimic their sounds, comics will use creative designs/fonts to mimic sounds.

Created in 1963 by Marvel comics, The X-Men are a group of superheroes who have genetic mutations that give them powers.

They fight to protect humanity from evil threats, but are themselves hated and feared by much of the population due to their mutations.

Metaphor for minority groups or outsiders in society: civil rights, gay rights, etc.

Magneto: The Master of Magnetism

Debuted in X-Men #1 in 1963 as the X-men’s most persistent villain

In 1981, writer Chris Claremont revealed that Magneto was a Jewish survivor of The Holocaust. Thus explaining the character’s desire to lead mutants against the humans who so fear them.

SUMMARY

“The nail that sticks up…” I liked that passage a lot because I saw how he was better than the bullies. He stood out and was above them…so they wanted to bring him to their level. The panel when Max was getting beat by the medals, the background was a radiant orange. I think this color represents shock and fear. He was just doing what he was supposed to be doing and the kids came out of nowhere. It’s awful how someone can just deny kindness, especially with a child involved.

My favorite part was when the person was beaten for the bread and Max saw a part of it and gave it to the person. I like it because it shows that Max’s kindness still overpowers greed.

X-Men Part #1 – student example

The first thing that stuck out to me was the very first page where the boy was standing over a red puddle with a reflection of a superhero in it and I think that indicates that he may not look strong but he is inside. And I think the author made it red to symbolize blood to show that because of all the pain that the child has been through, he got stronger. I think the author also shows this when the boy throws the stick further than anybody else even though he looks as though he wouldn’t be able to do that, and he emphasizes that when the boy throws the stick and beats everyone a second time even though it weighs more than everyone else’s and the odds are against him. What I learned from part 1 was that even though someone may not look strong they can be. Also that going through tough things are what matures you and makes you stronger.
