We want to thank everyone who made the summer at
Webster House fun and enjoyable!

The walk was great especially since we came
back with no tics. The area made me feel like I
was in the woods as if I was going to discover
a camp ground during our walk.
What made the trip great was that the people
there who work on the site are knowledgeable
about the wildlife and what it means to keep
the sanctuary comfortable for the animals that
use it as their homes and for us to observe
them and not disrupt their way of life there.

The Harvard Museum of Natural History is one
of my favorite museums. The combination of art
and nature bring out my curiosity and wanting
to learn more about the artifacts that they have
featured. My favorite display was of the birds.
Since I am a bird lover, I felt so comfortable and
did not want to leave. I even came close to buy-
ing Bird Bingo at the gift shop which was voted
the best gift shop on the North Shore according
to a plaque on the outside wall. Other than the
bird area they had other interesting things to see
like a replica of a real Japanese House. We went
in one and it was amazing and it made me feel like I was in another country. They had stereotypi-
cal New England art of the 18th century. Overall this trip was truly amazing and I would love to
go back to experience it again and to buy my bingo board.

Once upon a time, a woman was digging in her
garden and low and behold she found a nugget of
gold. “What is this?” she said to herself. The man
next to her said, “you’ve hit a goldmine.” The next
thing she did was start digging for more. She
pulled up her basil, lettuce, and tomatoes . In fact,
the real gold was her plants but she didn't realize
this at first. She regretted it and started
replanting . Never again she thought, would she
over look the very thing that meant gold to her.

Patriots Place
One of our exciting trips thus far has been to Patriots Place to go see the New England
Patriots Hall of Fame. It is three floors of fun and knowledge any sports fan can appre-
ciate. The Hall of Fame is very modern in today's technology world where you get to
experience simulations, videos, and play games all throughout the building. They
showed old clips of highlights of accomplishments that the Patriots team experienced
as well as being surrounded by memorabilia of such things like game used equipment
and footballs.

On July 13th, 2018 we took a trip on Friday to the Edward
M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Dor-
chester. A few members and staff went on the trip and for
that day we were all senators. We got to see a replica of
how the senate floor looks and took part in a mock senate
session and debated. We also got a chance to check out
some artifacts that were Senator Kennedy's and what he cherished the most, like hand written let-
ters and pictures of his family.

Swan Boat Tour
Thank you to the crew at the Boston Pub-
lic Gardens who operate the Swan Boats
for allowing us to come in and enjoy a
nice stroll around the pond. The Swan
Boats is a popular summer activity in
Boston and we got to experience the
amazing views of the city while sur-
rounded by the beautiful green scenery
with ducks and swans swimming along-
side. A very humbling experience.

In recent months the Outreach Department has been working endlessly on many different tasks.
Members have helped the unit with placing outreach calls to those who have not been able to come
to the Clubhouse and check up on how they are doing. As well members give tours around the
place for those who are orienting to assist them with their transition to Webster House. The work
Unit has also been successful with providing members with useful information about community
based resources, such as the Boston Health Net’s/Boston Medical Center, Roslindale Health Clinic
Food Truck, and the social Security Office in Roslindale. We have also provided information
about Brookline Community resources as well. All the work we have done in the Unit would not
be possible if it wasn’t for the endless help that members provide for us. The Intake Unit wants to
thank everyone for lending their time and talents to make what the Unit is today.

Camille is someone that Webster House knows and appreciates really
well since prior to her being hired full time as our Employment
Specialist she interned for us during the Winter/ Spring months. She
was welcomed with open arms and has hit the ground running with
meeting with members and getting to know each individual she comes
across in the Clubhouse. She is not afraid to go up to anyone and spark
a conversation or to carry out any task she is asked to do. Camille is
ready to learn more about what Webster House is all about and how
she can help and impact anyway she can. She sees herself helping with
Employment but also socializing and being a person who you can sit
and chat with to work things out.

Everyday should be an opportunity to learn something new. A great way to accomplish that is to
come to the Education Unit since they are constantly finding new and exciting things to learn, un-
derstand, and discuss different opinions. For those who wish to educate themselves and improve
writing and reading skills the Education Unit provides that as well as focusing on information that
can benefit you when you’re out in public. One such topic the Education Unit discussed was the
importance about safety in the summer months and what you should do to protect yourself. Such
topics are all thanks to the staff and members who help the Education Unit think them up. We en-
courage anyone to bring up topics that they find themselves asking and would like to learn more
of. Please feel free to stop by the Education Unit and share any ideas that you have and we can
implement it into our discussions.

Art This month the Art unit has been focusing on preparing for the upcoming Fall art Show. Artists
have been working tirelessly to prepare artwork for the gallery as well as Roslindale open studios
in which aprox 20-30 artists are participating. There are several artists whom I would like to high-
light in their work trying new mediums and subjects. Our featured artist Sarah E. has been working
on a series of silk screen art pieces, as well as Brian M. and Hilde D. who have been working with
the art Teacher to learn pallet knife painting.
Laura would like to highlight the following members for their outstanding help in the art room:
Nancy K. who helped to create/organize the new art storage system, Hilde D who helped to organ-
ize the pottery studio, and Eddie B who helped clean and organize the art supplies.
Random Art Fact: Kintsugi, The Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with
gold. Based in the belief that something that has been broken can be more beau-
tiful after it has been mended than it was when it was whole.
Kitchen Dennis B.
The Food Unit got some new members and is
doing well feeding everybody who wishes to
have a meal at Webster. In recent weeks we had
astounding help across the board with help from
members and staff. Any help is welcome
whether it be big or small. A lot of people like to
cut fruit while others find it enjoyable to clean.
Others come in the morning and lay everything
out. Anyone can come and support the kitchen in
the efforts of getting the meals prepped and dis-
tributed out.
Richard B.
Richard, who has an ear for music, has come into the Communication Unit and worked on how to
listen to his favorite songs. Never touching a computer before he has made outstanding progress
on working towards independently getting online and picking out his favorite songs to listen to.
Richard wants to keep working toward learning more of the computer where he does not need any
assistance on how to use the computer. His efforts have not gone unnoticed and everyone at Web-
ster House is proud of him for learning something new. The Communication Unit is always wel-
coming any member to learn something new and develop skills that will help them in the future.
We have worked with other members to set up emails and how to navigate through the internet.
Social
Due to the recent loss of our Inavale Fund Web-
ster House has recently begun brainstorming
new ways to fundraise for our program to allow
us to go on more social outings. Some of the
ideas include; open mike night, spaghetti din-
ner, brunch, and
other community
meals to help raise
money to support
the clubhouse.
Thank you to the friends of Metro Boston for hosting Softball this year. The atmosphere was great
and we truly enjoyed getting out there and playing amongst friends. What I think of summer I
think of moments like this.

The Institute of Contemporary Art is a beautiful place on the outside and in. It is right next to the
waterfront and has a nice view of Boston. Inside had great art pieces with paintings that were very
colorful and made you think. Staff and the members who came all enjoyed it and I was happy with
the group I went with. We went on a Friday for free for the Free Fun Friday promotion provided
by Highland Street Foundation which opened the doors for many Museums like the ICA for peo-
ple to go and see their exhibits. We are thankful for the opportunity of attending and would love to
go back and see more Exhibits.
