President’s Report- June 2020: Well, it has been quite a year and one that we hope will not be repeated as far as the Covid-19 pandemic is concerned. However, Australia has done very well in handling the threat. The last few months have made us stop and consider what is important in life and to look at new ways of doing things so as to retain what is worth keeping and discard what is not. This is just as true for our club events as it is for family.

The year started with our AGM electing six office bearers and the election of the previous office holders. At the same time, we were looking at how to reduce the number of business meetings which people seemed reluctant to attend. The club has tried a few ideas but has chosen to have four business meetings a year held in conjunction with outings and to have additional meetings at outings, less formal, to address pressing needs.

In August 2019 we had a delightful “wine and dine tour”, organised by Lesley, which to my mind highlighted what our club is all about. A trip through beautiful countryside, meeting up with friends and travelling together, meeting some along the way, and then enjoying a meal together and sampling wine or sharing a drink. Then travel home and help club members in the case of breakdowns. We did not make our last stop on the tour but I am sure all had a very enjoyable day.

In October we had our business meeting and enjoyed a run in our cars and lunch at the pub. Our Christmas “break up party” was held in Ipswich to help check things out for our national meet. A good time was had by all. Throughout the year a team was working hard to organise the national meet to be held in September 2020, but unfortunately that was not to be.

Christmas came and went and some of us attended the Samford Museum Australia Day celebrations. I arrived late due to another commitment but still enjoyed the day out in the Essex. Had a little problem with the idling but “she” ran well under throttle and we arrived home ok. It was good to catch up with friends and club members there.

The Rambler Round-Up on February 9th. was another great day with the opportunity to give the Hudson some “exercise” and enjoy breakfast with friends.

Helen and I went to Sydney and Melbourne with the caravan about this time but returned home with a cold so we ruled ourselves unfit to attend the meeting at Wivenhoe Dam as the Coronavirus pandemic was spreading in Australia and around the world. Then came the government restrictions and so club activities shut down while we sat out the impacts, staying isolated at home. We reached the stage where we had to make a decision about whether to proceed with the national meet or not and reluctantly, we chose to postpone the meet depending on what happens with the pandemic, due to too many unknown details around the whole meet. In hindsight, we made a wise decision as the restrictions became more severe and Australia is still not out of restrictions.

We are now able to have up to 20 people at a meeting so we are holding our AGM while observing present restrictions. I am guessing that members will be feeling like me and are looking for an opportunity to get our cars out and do more touring, so I look forward to meeting you all in our club outings. If you have any ideas on what you would like to do then why not put it in writing and send it to Sandra. I am sure it would be welcome and any stories on hobbies or trips with family will also be suitable. I thought I might contribute with a verse of poetry that “speaks” to me. I will see how that goes.

To end off, let 2020/21 year be our year of recovering from the pandemic restrictions and let us all contribute to outings and our newsletter. Love to see you out and about in the coming year. Roy Gillespie

A SORT OF FREEDOM – OXLEY CREEK ENVIRONMENT CENTRE

13 June 2020

Well here we were eager to venture out after the COVID-19 lockdown which saw most of us having to find things to do around the house. Harry did something different – he went and purchased a new vehicle. Joy showed us some photos – it is a beauty (except for being left-hand drive) and we look forward to seeing it on the road. It was good to see more than expected turn up for the day. When we arrived at Oxley Common it was difficult to find a car park – wow what a turnout for the HETNR Club. It turned out there were some cyclists who went for a ride. There was also a group of individuals who belonged to a fitness club who, unbeknown to us, had booked the entire undercover area. They practiced social distancing during their exercise class but then proceeded to congregate on one side of the undercover area. We found another table and as most people had sensibly brought chairs, we didn’t have too much trouble settling in. Most people headed off after the meeting.

Roy and Helen, Gerard and Geoffrey and myself had brought our lunch so it was decided we would stay and eat it there. Gerard nearly got locked out of Queensland – he’d been off tripping around but skedaddled over the border when word got around it was about to close. Garry and Lesley came in their Mustang as all the Ramblers were either in need of surgery or hard to get out of the shed – so only photos of people using safe distancing. Peter Wilkinson couldn’t make it due to the flu and Sue Ward was doing some volunteer work. Here are some shots of us all social distancing.

Garry & Lesley decided to have lunch at the Dayboro Pub on their way home.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Verse of the Day- by Roy Gillespie

Poem: “Old Australian Ways” by Banjo Paterson.

Last verse.

“And if it be that you should know,

The tracks he (Clancy of the Overflow) used to ride,

Then you must saddle up and go,

Beyond the Queensland side,

Beyond the reach and rule of law,

To ride the long day through,

In Nature’s homestead – filled with awe

You then might see what Clancy saw,

And know what Clancy knew.”

Comment: It amuses me that Queensland was considered to be the outback back then. We can make the poem relevant to us by modifying some lines such as,“ Then we must fire up the old car and go” and instead of “ride” insert “drive”. However, still identify with, “In Nature’s homestead – filled with awe” which expresses the joy I get out of driving through our beautiful countryside. Hope you enjoy the verse.
