Regular measurem
ents of the cathodic protection applied to buried metal pipelines are considered to be the best practice against
external corrosion. Effective CP will help to achieve or exceed the pipeline’s design life. Cathodic Protection (CP) m
easurement is
a laborious process. Manual m
onitoring works out to be costly. M
oreover, problem becom
es known only after its occurrence. The
Wireless SCADA enabled TRANSFORM
ER-RECTIFIER REMOTE M
ONITORING AND CONTROL SYSTEM (TRM
CS) has been designed tocollect CP data autom
atically at the remote field stations and transm
it the same using GSM
/SMS to the centre control (base)
station. It also includes software for displaying, interpreting and generating the report in Real Tim
e.
Cathodic ProtectionW
ith proven track records over many decades, CP is now
well established as an effective m
ethod of protecting metal pipelines. The
preferred technique for high pressure transmission pipeline netw
ork is impressed current cathodic protection in w
hich transformer
rectifier provide the direct current output from a T/R w
hich is capable of protecting long length of pipeline. The other prevailingm
ethod of SACP is useful to protect small length of pipeline.
Impressed current system
s rely on the continuity of the AC supply to the T/R. Moreover, the am
ount of CP current that is appliedis very im
portant. With too little current, the corrosion rate w
ould be unacceptably high. Excessive current can lead to disbandingof the pipe coating and hydrogen em
brittlement. Therefore, m
onitoring and controlling of current requirement is im
perative. The
Wireless SCADA enabled TRM
S is developed for eliminating above problem
s.
The Case for remote m
onitoringIn the event of an AC supply or T/R failure, the CP system
becomes inoperative. The pipeline w
ill be unprotected until the fault isdetected m
anually and rectified. As a result, the CP is ineffective and shortens pipeline life. Therefore, there is a clear rationale forensuring that the CP system
is maintained in a fully functioning and effective state. Rem
ote monitoring is m
ore proactiveoperational approach to corrosion prevention.
Safety is another important factor. M
any T/Rs are located on busy roadsides or at relatively inaccessible locations, posing additionalrisks to lone-w
orking technicians.Working on a T/R exposes staff to tw
o separate earthing systems, so, it is necessary for technicians
to be trained in electrical isolation and to maintain such qualifications.
TR Monitoring and Control System
The system provides continuous status of TR and alarm
notification with respect to pipeline cathodic protection system
s in realtim
e. This low cost, highly reliable netw
ork provides prompt inform
ation of power outages, rectifier problem
s, and pipe-to-soilpotentials. The rem
ote monitoring unit w
hich is interfaced to TR handles the reading of data, monitoring filed points, and
performing user-configured tasks on schedule. The field units are responsible for pushing current status and alarm
information into
a centralized database at preset interval of user configurable. Through its innovative use of the existing cellular telephone network
the system delivers a rare com
bination of high reliability, imm
ediacy of data, at a remarkably low
cost. This transaction based,w
ireless network com
munication requires no w
ireless network construction or technical m
aintenance on the part of the user.
Hardw
are and Software
Wireless-SCADA-TRM
CS comprises of tw
o major stations-Filed and Base. The unit in field station is em
bedded controller basedhardw
are. The field and base stations are interfaced through GSM protocol for w
ireless data transmissions. The hardw
are is developedw
ith advanced microcontroller. Firm
ware is developed in em
bedded C. The system is pow
ered by conventional power. The optional
battery power w
ill be utilized for indicating power outages. All the features w
ould be customized as per the requirem
ent.
The front end software is incorporated in base station in a standard PC w
ith GSM M
ODEM for CP data acquisition, real tim
e analysisand notification.
Power supply Available conventional 230v supply w
ill be used for powering TRM
S
