Week 1: Spelling Test

Use the ‘Look, Cover, Say, Write, Check’ method to learn these spellings ready for a spellings test next lesson. There will be bonus positive points if you are able to remember what each word means – you do not need to remember each word by word, you may summarise*.

1. Alliance – an agreement signed between two or more countries to help each other if needed. Once they join these countries become known as allies.

2. Arms-Race – a competition between nations for superiority in the development and accumulation of weapons.

3. Assassination – the action of assassinating (murdering) someone.

4. Conscientious Objector – a person who for reasons of conscience objects to serving in the armed forces.

5. Conscription – compulsory enlistment for state service, typically into the armed forces.

6. Empire – an extensive group of states or countries ruled over by a single monarch, an oligarchy, or a sovereign state.

7. Imperialism – a policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means.

8. Propaganda – information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.

9. Trench – a long, narrow ditch dug by troops to provide a place of shelter from enemy fire.

10. Triple Entente – an alliance formed in 1907 between Russia, France and Great Britain as a result of increasing negative relations with Germany and later the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy).

1. Archduke – a chief duke, in particular (formerly) the son of the Emperor of Austria.

2. Armistice – an agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting for a certain time; a truce.

3. Austro-Hungarian – a monarchy (1867–1918) in central Europe that included the empire of Austria, the kingdom of Hungary, and various crown lands.

4. Conscription – compulsory enlistment for state service, typically into the armed forces.

5. Military – the armed forces of a country.

6. Schlieffen Plan – the operational plan for a designated attack on France once Russia, in response to international tension, had started to mobilise her forces near the German border. The execution of the Schlieffen Plan led to Britain declaring war on Germany on August 4th, 1914.

7. Treaty – a formally concluded and ratified agreement between states.

8. Truce – an agreement between enemies or opponents to stop fighting or arguing for a certain time.

9. Warfare – engagement in or the activities involved in war or conflict.

10. Western Front – the zone of fighting in western Europe in the First World War, in which the German army engaged the armies to its west, i.e. France, the UK (and its dominions), and, from 1917, the US. For most of the war the front line stretched from the Vosges Mountains in eastern France through Amiens to Ostend in Belgium.
