On The Music Scene The Impressions March 2014 The

Impressions started out as a Doo-Wop group called the Roosters in 1957 Which included Sam Gooden, Richard Brookes and Arthur Brooks They lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At this time Mayfield and Butler had met in the choir of the Travelling Soul Spiritualists Church, from where they formed the Modern Jubilaires and Northern Jubilee Singers. The two teenagers then drifted apart, and while Mayfield was involved in another group, the Alphatones, Butler joined Gooden and the Brooks brothers in the Roosters.

Mayfield was subsequently installed as their guitarist. Dubbed the Impressions by their manager, Eddie Thomas and he accuired them a record deal with Abner/Falcon, ‘For Your Precious Love’, was a gorgeous ballad and a substantial hit, reaching number #3 on the r&b and #11 in the US pop chart in June 1958. The label credit, which read ‘Jerry Butler And The Impressions’, caused internal friction, and the two sides split, after one more release,‘Come Back My Love’.#30 on the r&b Charts While Jerry Butler’s solo career gradually prospered, on the Vee- Jay label, that of his erstwhile colleagues floundered. Butler went on tour and took Mayfield as his guitarist, Curtis wrote a few songs for Butler ‘He Will Break Your Heart’, was a hit single in 1960 and the success of which (and of other Mayfield-penned songs) rekindled the Impressions’ career.Later that year new bass Singer Fred Cash (who had been an original Rooster before he was called up) joined the group. Curtis now with dollars, got the group to move to the city of Chicago in 1961 and get a new deal with ABC /Paramount records and stepped up to the plate and became the New Lead Singer and writer of the material for the Impressions.

He wrote more a pop /gospel songs and moved away from the Doo -Wop sound and straight away had a major hit on their hands with “Gypsy Woman” #2 on the new r&b charts and #20on the pop charts, but successive singles failed to chart and the Brooks brothers left to go as a duet. Leaving the Trio of Mayfield, Sam Gooden and Fred Cash, they record their next single with producer Johnny Pate who brought a more lush sound to their act with their next Hit went Gold a Million seller“It’s Alright” in 1963 hitting #1 on the r&b Charts and #4 on the pop charts. Theses tracks became the backbone of their first LP The Impressions, with their rhythmic 3 part Harmonies and Johnny Pates stylish arrangements.Curtis Mayfield try to get away from the boy meets girl songs and started to write more Soical conscious songs about freedom & Black Pride to help the Negros Get Up in the world. He wrote in 1964“I’m So proud” #14 r&b charts #14 pop charts also “Keep On Pushing” which became a top ten hits on both charts, it would be the title of their next LP which also reached top ten in the Album charts. They were booked on several t.v. Shows in 1964, and had a #7 pop hit with Amen, which was in the Sydney Poitier film Lilies of the fields.

Future Mayfield compositions would feature an increasingly social and political awareness, including the following year's major hit and the group's best-known song, the gospel-influenced "People Get Ready",1965 which hit #3 on the R&B charts and #14 on the pop charts. In the mid Sixties the group were in the same league as the Motown artiste and were being looked at by the young blacks as leaders of their kind, In 1965 they had hits with “Womans Got Soul” and “ Meeting over Yonder” which reached #12 r&b but only 48 on the pop charts, they recorded many songs but failed to cross-over to the pop chart. Curtis then wrote and released two pop love songs a throw back from earlier days, proberly influence by Motown who were always in the pop charts, which charted on the r&b charts both reaching #12 “You’ve Been Cheating” “I Can’t Satisfy” in 1967 they came back with another message song “We Are A Winner” reaching #1 on the r&b Charts .

later that year Curtis Mayfield started his own record label called Curtom having tried earlier in 1966 with Windy City records which the Five Stairsteps were signed to, and also in 1967 with Mayfield and here he signed the girl group Facinations, this time he took the Impressions from ABC records. over the next couple of years The Group carried out their Message songs to the people but with a much harder Statement with the first LP “This Is My Country” 1968 and 1969 their latest LP Young Mods Forgotten Story releasing “Mighty Mighty Spade and Whitey”and “Choice Of Colours” r&b #1 hit in 1969 and in 1970 “Check Out Your Mind”. On both these albums the close 3 part harmony are gone, and Curtis is in the Driving seat , as though a Solo artiste with Fed Cash and Sam Gooden backing him, He still wrote songs for other Chicago artistes Major Lance “Um Um Um Um Um” and Gene Chandler ‘“Nothing Can Stop Me” In 970 Curtis Left the Impressions and went Solo bringing out his first LP Curtis which had the hit ”Moving On Up” Curtis was paralyzed in an accident in 1990, when a lighting scaffold toppled over on him; he died in 1999.

Mayfield was replaced on lead vocals by Leroy Hutson, who debuted on the LP with “Times Have Changed” in1972's. Hutson departed in 1973, new singers Ralph Johnson and Reggie Torrian joined Cash and Gooden for the R&B chart-topper "Finally Got Myself Together (I'm a Changed Man)," 1974, cut with ex-Motown producer Ed Townsend .In 1976 they had a hit in the

UK with First Impression Reaching #16 in the pop Charts, but Around that point, the Impressions parted ways with Curtom; Nate Evans replaced Johnson, and the group recorded for Cotillion and 20th Century/Chi-Sound with little chart success. Evans eventually departed, leaving the group a trio again. They recorded their final album, Fan the Fire, in 1981. Sam Gooden, Fred Cash, & Reggie Torrain apperared at Prestatyn soul week-ender last week and on all accounts were brill they have also released a single called “Rhythm” an old Curtis Mayfield tune on Daptone records..

Featured Soul Artistes Eddie Holman

Eddie Holman was born June 3, 1946 His specialty ranges from R&B and pop to gospel. Although born in Norfolk, Virginia, Holman later grew up in New York. His mother, noticing that he loved to sing, even as early as the age of two, She introduced him to the piano and the guitar, where he quickly revealed a natural aptitude. His abilities, however, were confined mostly to church and family gatherings until 1956. It was then, at the age of ten, that Little Eddie Holman stepped onto the stage on Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater and showed his smooth tenor voice.

His victory at the Apollo began to open many other doors for the young prodigy. Soon, Holman was performing at theaters on Broadway and even at Carnegie Hall. Not wanting her son to miss any opportunity, his mother was able to get him enrolled at the Victoria School of Music in Harlem. At Victoria, he learned the technical craft of music and began to blossom. In 1962, Holman released his first record on Leopard 5001 “What You Don’t Know (Won’t Hurt You”) his second was titled “I Need A Song”/ “Baby Don’t You Stop” Leopard 5003 he released a few more singles on the Ascot 2142 “laughing At Me”/“Go Get Your Own”and on Don-El 124 “Lost”/ “She’s Beautiful”

As a teenager, Holman and his family then moved to Philadelphia. After graduating from high school, he attended Cheyney State University where he graduated with a degree in music. It was in the Philadelphia soul scene that he began to develop his trademark style. While still in college, he recorded his first hit record, for Parkway Records 960 "This Can't Be True" (1965). Other hits began to follow: Parkway 981 “Don’t Stop Now”/”Eddie’s My Name” 1965 the latter became a Northern soul favourite, "Am I A Loser From The Start" (1966), After doing some small stints singing with the Philadelphia groups The Delfonics and The Stylistics, Holman then recorded for Bell 712 “I’ll Cry 1000 Tears/”I’m Not Gonna Give Up “1968.

He then moved to ABC Records and released ABC11149 “ I Love You “/“I Surrender” the B side which became another Northern Favourite and finally struck personal gold in 1969 with his ballad, for ABC1124 "Hey There Lonely Girl"/ “It’s All In The Game” (number 4 in the UK Singles Chart in November 1974 It had sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc from the R.I.A.A. in March 1970. It was originally "Hey There Lonely Boy" recorded in 1963 by Ruby and the Romantics), which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. ABC11261“Since I Don’t Have You” /”Don’t Stop Now” followed in 1970 and also “ I Need Somebody “/"Cathy Called" ABC 11276.

In 1974 he signed to the Silver Blue Label and released two singles but none hit the charts yet in 1977, he released two records for the Sal Soul label "This Will Be A Night To Remember"/”Time will Tell”Sal Soul 2026 & Sal Soul 2043 "You Make My Life Complete"/”Somehow”.these became his last hits.

Eddie Holman and his wife Sheila have three children. He is an ordained Baptist minister who uses his musical talents both as a tool of entertainment and as a medium to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ. He believes that his talent is a gift from God and therefore must be used to glorify his Maker. Furthermore, it is his belief "that those who are blessed with creative talent have a responsibility to encourage personal accountability and to set the best example possible because of the powerful influence that they have on the lives of so many young ones." He has released a Gospel LP entitled United on the New Cross label 1001.

Today, Holman owns his own record label (Agape Records) and music publishing company (Schoochiebug Music Publishing). He also continues to tour with the Eddie Holman Band. He still resides in Philadelphia, and spends time as a local community volunteer helping reach out to those less fortunate. He also works within the Philadelphia School System encouraging young people to become involved in the performing arts. During the summer of 2007, Holman performed weekly for the passengers abroad the MS Sun Princess cruise ship while it was en route to Alaska.

Recently he was on tour in England with David Gests Soul Legends Show delighting the audience with an astonishing precision instrument his Voice which can leap octaves with the speed of mercury and bend notes into shapes unimagined by lesser singers, delivering his singing in falsetto and in his normal Tenor range.

Record Labels Atlantic Part 8 march issue Stax the Hitch-Hike was Over

In 1962 the Stax deal began to reap major rewards for both labels. An after-hours jam by members of the Stax house band resulted in the classic instrumental "Green Onions". In conversation with BBC Radio 2 DJ Johnnie Walker on 7 September 2008, guitarist Steve Cropper revealed that the record became an instant success when DJ Reuben Washington played it four times in succession on Memphis radio station WLOK, before either the tune or the band had an agreed-upon name. The single was issued nationally in August 1962, by which time the band had been dubbed Booker T & the MGs; "Green Onions" became the biggest instrumental hit of the year, reaching #1 on the R&B chart and #3 on the pop chart, where it stayed for 16 weeks, and it sold over one million copies, earning a gold record award.

1962 saw the Stax debut of Otis Redding, who had been Johnny Jenkins' driver and record several songs at the end of one of Jenkins' sessions, among them his own "These Arms of Mine", which was released on Stax's Volt subsidiary and became a minor hit in the south. The next five years Redding would become one of Stax's most important artists. In 1965 Redding broke into the national charts; "Mr. Pitiful" reached #10 on the soul chart but missed out on the pop Top 40, followed by "I've Been Loving You Too Long", which made #2 on the soul chart and peaked at #21. "Respect" also performed strongly, reaching #4 on the soul chart and #35 on the pop chart

The next five years Stax and its subsidiary Volt provided Atlantic with a tremendous success, and many Atlantic artists were taken to Memphis to record. Among the many hits recorded by (or at) Stax between 1963 and 1967 were Rufus Thomas' "Walking The Dog", Otis Redding's "Respect", his classic version of "Try A Little Tenderness" and " his hit Tramp",a duet with Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood" and The Bar-Kays' "Soul Finger". Sam & Dave were signed to Atlantic but recorded at Stax at Jerry Wexler's suggestion; with the Stax band and the writing team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter, the duo scored eight consecutive R&B Top 20 hits including "You Don't Know Like I Know", "Hold On, I'm Coming", "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby", "Soul Man" and "I Thank You; Wilson Pickett scored hits with "In The Midnight Hour", "634-5789", "Land of 1000 Dances", "Mustang Sally", "Funky Broadway" and "I'm In Love".

1966 Jim Stewart banned all non-Stax productions from the studio, this action was rather late in the day, and it proved Jim Stewart‘s bad business brain! All of the hits for Atlantic, record, Stax only got the money for the hire of the studio sessions from Atlantic, and then Stewart had to pay the musicians himself, He must of realized that this was the Stax sound the public were buying and making into huge hits, so he stopped all the Atlantic productions. These records where produced up North but were brought down south to be finished after being given the Stax treatment. Wexler went to Stax to sort things out to no avail. (he wanted to keep the deal going he new this southern laid back sound was great)and all the hard work was do by Stax anyway on the cheap) Wexler was not like Stewart he had a Business brain and from this experience working with a southern studio he moved quickly. And turned this disappointment into a triumph for Atlantic records,

While down in the South Wexler looked for another southern Studio, to set up a deal, and who else but former Stax producer Chips Moman. Who now owned American Group Productions. studio in Memphis, Chips produced the first hit for Stax Carla Thomas’s “Gee Whizz” but left Stax in 1964 over a monetary dispute with Stax owner Jim StewartChips had a great studio sound and talent musicians which included guitarist Bobby Womack and also a young writer named Dan Penn, who wrote with Chips the soul Anthem “The Dark End of The Street” for James Carr.

Wexler had learned from his Stax experience and would not be put in that position again, so he went one better by not just having one southern studio, but two and did a deal with Rick Hall'sFAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, he went and listen to the sound and spent time with the musicians who like the Stax session players were laid back and easy going, yet were tight and in the groove, they also had a young writer on the label keyboard player Spooner
