Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church • 10/17/2017 •17th Sunday after PentecostWe continue a trial of a new order of worship. We feel honored to have been asked to try out “THE SERVICE” which could be a part of the new hymnal. Please make note of your impressions so you may give appropriate feedback when the trial is over. Thank you!

We follow the Biblical practice of close(d) Communion, celebrating the LORD’S SUPPER with those who are united in a common confession of faith. This is an expression of communion, or oneness, with Christ and each other. If you are not currently a WELS or ELS member and wish to commune with us, please speak with our pastor in advance.

A CARE ROOM is located at the back of the sanctuary where you can take care of our littlest worshipers while still being able to see and hear the service. RESTROOMS and DRINKING FOUNTAINS are located in the lower level.

The THEME for today is woven throughout the service in the lessons, hymns, and prayers: The Church forgives as God forgives. The Prayer of the Day asks that the mercy and grace of God precede us and follow after us, that we might love God with undivided hearts—hearts always ready to forgive as God does: sins are forgiven, forgotten, forever.

INVOCATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: ♫Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS M: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.C: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and

purify us from all unrighteousness.M: Let us confess our sins to the Lord.C: Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you

in my thoughts, words, and actions.I have not loved you with my whole heart;I have not loved others as I should.I deserve your punishment both now and forever.

But Jesus, my Savior, paid for my sins with his holy life and innocent death. Trusting in him, I pray:

God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

The Service begins with the words and sign of baptism (“Receive the sign of the cross…”) to remind worshipers that we approach the Lord as his baptized children.

We confess our sins against God and one another and seek the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness. The Service encourages silent confession during a short pause following the confessional prayer.

Having received the gift of the Lord’s forgiveness, we now make our requests on the basis of his mercy. This form of Lord, Have Mercy (Kyrie) addresses Christ as Lord in each of the petitions.

FIRST LESSON – Genesis 50:15-2115When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?” 16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, “Your father left these instructions before he died: 17‘This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.’ Now please forgive the sins of the

servants of the God of your father.” When their message came to him, Joseph wept. 18His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said. 19But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

M: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

How hard it is to forgive like God! We may forgive someone who hurts us, but we never forget. We harbor that hurt deep inside of us for years—never understanding that we are locking ourselves in the prison of the past. Joseph’s brothers feared that they would finally have to pay for what they did to Joseph. As repentant sinners, we often act like the brothers and wait for God to get even with us for our past sins. Shame on us! We are making God as shallow as we are! In God’s eyes our sins are forgiven, forgotten, forever. Joseph never wavered, but he calmed his brothers’ fears, forgave them like God forgives, and set them free from their prison of the past.

This way of concluding Scripture readings is common throughout Christendom and provides a simple, interactive way for worshipers to express gratitude for the Word they have just heard.

PSALM OF THE DAY – Psalm 103 red hymn book page 105

SECOND LESSON – Romans 14:5-95One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he

gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. 8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Christ set us free from the burdens of the Law; in the Gospel we have the freedom of sons. With freedom, though, comes responsibility. Our Christian freedom must be normed by love for our neighbor. Therefore let us make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Restricting my freedom out of love for my brother is service to Christ that pleases God and brings righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

After the Second Reading, we prepare to hear the words and works of Jesus by standing to sing “Alleluia”—praise the Lord.

We continue to stand as we hear the Gospel.

GOSPEL LESSON – Matthew 18:21-3521Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” 22Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. 23“Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him. 25Since he was not able to pay, the master

ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. 26“The servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. 28“But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. 29“His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ 30“But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened. 32“Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35“This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”

HYMN OF THE DAY............................................................Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive6

Jesus’ parable contrasts the forgiveness of God and our own unforgiving nature. The servant’s debt—by any measure of calculation—was impossibly high (perhaps 150,000 years’ wages). Who could have accrued debt such as this? Who could ever hope to repay? What an arresting picture of our debt of sin before God! The greatness of the debt magnifies the compassion of the king who wipes the debt away. Who can comprehend the forgiveness of God? Certainly not unmerciful servants like us, who refuse to forgive the small debts owed to us, and instead, inflict on our fellow servants the punishments that God should rightly have given us. Have mercy on us, Lord, and teach us to forgive like you!

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: Eternal Lord, you speak to us in words of love and light and power. Fill us with

peace today as we ponder the good news that you forgive our sins in Christ. Guide our lives today as we see clearly the path you have laid out for us. Work in us today through your Spirit that our thoughts, words, and actions glorify you and serve our neighbor.

C: Fill us with the Word we have heard today and move us to believe it and live it.

M: Provide courage and compassion to all who preach and teach your Word. Take away their fear of criticism and contention and make them bold to say what you say. Fill them with a love like yours and lead them to announce the forgiveness of sins as your free gift to us and all people.

C: Move us to love all ministers of the Word wherever they serve.

M: Forgive us for the times we hear your Word but fail to live it in our lives. Break down the apathy that lurks in us and leads us to ignore eternal realities. Convict us with your law and then fill us so full of your gospel that we overflow with zeal to do your will.

C: Give us thankful hearts to live and love with joy.M: Guard and guide us as we live in a society that despises what you say about

marriage. Lead husbands and wives to love each other with commitment, respect, and patience. Move parents to grasp the eternal value of keeping their children close to Jesus even when their children grow up.

C: Protect us from the evil that surrounds us; give us pure hearts and minds.M: Provide your divine compass for those who govern us by making laws and

There are many factors that go into deciding where to send your children, one of which is wise stewardship of family and church resources.
