WAYS AND MEANS - LUCY CROWLEY

Our major fundraisers for the year are behind us but we are still planning our monthly chance baskets, so I am asking you to be most generous when buying the tickets for these. We have decided to do fewer baskets, but instead we will be having gift cards from various restaurants in Palm Coast and along A1A. Please support these restaurants by visiting them and enjoying a lunch or dinner there. They are most generous by donating these gift cards.

We are working on one more fundraiser for the year and I will have more information for you on that in the April newsletter,

Thank you all for your support. Lucy

Sandy Hollenbeck thanked all for attending. Sandy asked members to introduce their prospective members and guests.

FOOD PANTRY – SHERYL MARVIN & TERRY RAINERI As I sit down to write this article, I have just returned from attending the University Women of Flagler’s Day of Games fundraiser. In addition to

playing a great game of Canasta (even though my team lost!), we enjoyed a delicious lunch including large servings of lasagna, salad, bread and lots of delicious baked goods. Many of us are able to take meals like that for granted, but I can’t help but wonder when the people who visit the Resource Center or live at the Family Life Center were last able to enjoy such a hearty meal. We would like to thank all the members of the GHWC who take the time to remember those who aren’t able to take the next meal for granted. Your donations of food items and cash or checks are sincerely appreciated by the food insufficient in Flagler County.

The Resource Center and Family Life Center continue to be in need of canned, boxed and fresh food items. Canned or dried milk is needed, along with canned fruits and veggies. (They have enough corn at the moment, but could use any type of canned beans.) Easy to heat foods, such as spaghetti, ravioli, stew, hash, and soups are always requested. Canned chicken, turkey, or tuna are also needed. Lunchables, found in the refrigerated section of the market, have been requested. Fresh fruits, apples, bananas, oranges, and fresh vegetables, potatoes, carrots, peppers, etc. are always enjoyed by the recipients. Toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, foil, and cleaning supplies are also needed.

Thanks again for caring enough to donate to people in need in Flagler County.

PRESIDENT’S PROJECT - SALLY NORD

At our February meeting, State President Carole Weaver brought a basketful of stuffed puppies. They were just adorable and could be adopted for $15.00 a puppy. All of the proceeds went to Canine Companions for Independence. Well, our puppy loving members emptied the basket, raising $210.00 for CCI. Sandy Hollenbeck also presented Carole with a check for $250.00. $150.00 of this was raised from our “Pennies for Puppies” collection. And that’s not all. Carole Weaver won one of the chance drawings, which was a gift card to The Funky Pelican. Since Carole lives on the other side of the State, our club bought it back to be used again and made another donation to CCI for $30.00. So the grand total donated at the February meeting to the State President’s Project was $490.00. Sally Nord

THE MATERIAL GIRLS- BARBARA WHITE

The Material Girls will gather on Monday, March 30th from 1 to 3 p.m. at Barbara White's home, 27 Southlake Drive. Please call or e-mail if you'd like to attend so I may have a chair ready for you.

At our February meeting, two adorably decorated chemo caps were knitted and donated for the Flagler Cancer centers. They are so appreciative of these, especially during the cold winter months.

We are working on various projects: new & old scarf patterns, baby blanket and chemo caps. Come join us for an interesting afternoon of chatting while we work on our projects, share patterns, catch up on the latest news about things and foster friendships. We do have fun! CARPOOLING…..it makes sense! WHY? Why drive alone when you can travel with friends; it saves on gas; and is a tremendous help now that the golf club is open on Mondays and parking spaces are filling up with our members and golfers--carpooling will free up some spaces to help ease the situation of a filled parking lot. Give Carpooling a try----think of who you can team up with to Carpool to the luncheon. And, if you should have carpooling stories you’d wish to share, I would love to hear them….email them to me at [email protected].

HOME LIFE – COMMUNITY NEWS - KAREN FINDER

SPRING IS COMING- IT’S TIME TO DECLUTTER

! !

In spring, as you clean out clutter and remove cobwebs from corners, take the opportunity to also inventory your possessions. Spending the time now organizing, cataloging and protecting your personal property frees you up to enjoy the season's warm weather and longer days. The following spring cleaning checklist will help you organize and inventory your home, preparing you for whatever life has to offer.

1. PurgeChances are unwanted items crept into your home over the past year and are taking up precious space. While some of the materials should obviously be tossed, you'll likely find items you can donate to a worthy cause. List the donation items and their estimated worth for tax purposes and then set them out of the way.

2. Improve organizationYou may find while purging that certain areas of your house or specific items are not well-organized. Take a close look where clutter reigns in your home and consider adding organization tools. For instance, if you tend to stack paperwork that you need to address and then find yourself sifting through piles when it's time to pay your insurance bill or consult a party invitation, file the paperwork in a portable filing system or labeled stackable trays.

Organizing your home is also likely to improve your finances, as it helps guarantee that no financial obligations are forgotten, and you may even find

Page 11: Weeblyghwc.weebly.com/uploads/3/9/0/6/39067555/ghwc_ma… · Web viewWell, our puppy loving members emptied the basket, raising $210.00 for CCI. Sandy Hollenbeck also presented Carole

valuable receipts for tax purposes or forgotten gems like gift cards.

-10-

3. InventoryWhile organizing your belongings, also protect your investment and do a home inventory. Having on hand thorough and accurate records of your possessions and property in case of loss or theft makes the recovery process run more smoothly.

Thanks to technology, there are a wide variety of ways to easily and quickly record and catalog your personal property, such as The Home Gallery® app for iPhone and Android. This comprehensive tool enables you to perform all of the tasks necessary when completing a home inventory, such as taking photos and cataloging items by room and category. The app also allows you to snap images of receipts and track belongings in multiple properties. You can browse a gallery of your belongings in the database and easily add new purchases and acquisitions.

4. Record everythingWhen performing the inventory, be as thorough as possible. This is especially important in the event of a total loss. In addition to recording the existence of valuable items like jewelry, family heirlooms and electronics, remember to record everyday belongings that will need to be replaced, such as dishware and clothing.

5. Review your homeowners or renters insuranceNow that you know what you own and how much it's worth is the ideal time to review your insurance policy to see if it accurately covers your current possessions. You may find that you aren't adequately insured or that your policy requires some adjustments. Or you may be relieved to discover that you have just the right amount of home coverage.

Spring cleaning your home and conducting a thorough inventory may take some time, but the resulting peace of mind is well worth the effort.Excerpted from http://www.libertymutualinsurance/thetorchhome.com

HISTORY OF GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS AND GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS FLORIDA

Part 7

1990s: GFWC actively supported the passage of the Violence Against Women Act; the Americans With Disabilities Act; the Family and Medical Leave Act; and legislation supporting handgun control.

1994: GFWC founder Jane Cunningham Croly was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York.

1997: GFWC renewed its commitment to libraries with the Libraries 2000 project. Over a five year period, GFWC clubwomen raised and donated $13.5 million to public libraries and public school libraries across the nation.

2000s: GFWC members contributed $180,000 for a fully-equipped ambulance for use by the New York Fire Department in response to the loss of equipment suffered during the terrorist attacks on September11, 2001.

GFWC continues its tradition of addressing social issues affecting women and families through programs that combat violence against women and promote human rights.

This concludes the history of the Federation. I hope all of you have enjoyed learning about the accomplishments our organization has made over the years.
