PARENT MEETINGS TOMORROW AT 2.00 PM AND 6.30 PM

Tomorrow, Tuesday 6th August, 2013, Laverton College is holding two important parent meetings one at 2.00 pm and one at 6.30 pm. These meetings are important for the future of Laverton College. We want to know the views of our parents. What do you want for your children’s future? What can we do to make things better at Laverton College? Please come along and share your views. Each meeting will go for an hour. Snacks will be provided. The meetings will be in the staffroom. There will be a Karen interpreter at the 6.30 pm meeting. Please let Melinda in the Administration Office know if you are coming along.

The views and ideas of parents and students will assist the staff of Laverton College when developing the new College Vision.

PARENT OPINION SURVEY:

At the moment the Education Department’s Parent Opinion survey is being conducted across Victoria. Parents at Laverton College have been randomly selected to fill in the survey. It is important that as many surveys as possible are completed and returned to school. If you have been sent a survey can you please complete and

return it to school by Thursday 8th August, 2013 this week.THEFT AT LAVERTON COLLEGE:

Monday, last week, our staff arrived at school to find that the water meter had been stolen, the water pipe cut and there was no water supply to the College. Urgent and costly work was required to restore the water supply; however, the College was still without water all morning causing considerable inconvenience to students and staff. The matter has been referred to the police. Parents and community are asked to notify police on 000 if they see anyone acting suspiciously or damaging the school.

CURRICULUM DAY: MONDAY 19TH AUGUST:

There will be no school for students on Monday 19th August as it is our final Curriculum Day for the year. On this day staff will be working on the new Vision for Laverton College.

SAFETY AROUND LAVERTON COLLEGE:

A reminder for all families to use the Children’s Crossing in front of the school and to ensure that their children do as well, at all times. It has been very noticeable during the first week of term that far too often parents and students are crossing Bladin Street without using the ‘Children’s Crossing’. This is very dangerous, especially when young students walk onto the road from between parked cars.

SCABIES:

With a few reported cases of people with scabies here at College as stated in the last newsletter, it is important that people with scabies get treatment from their doctor.

Main symptom - intense itching especially at night. What does scabies look like?

Skin bumps or burrows (lines on the skin) usually occur in the area of the hands, feet, wrists, elbows as well as other parts of the body. As scabies is infectious, people with scabies need to be treated to prevent passing it on to others.

Treatment - the doctor will prescribe lotion for the person to put on their whole body. The student can return to school after their treatment has commenced and with notification from the doctor that treatment has commenced.

Viv – Secondary School Nurse/ Health Promotion Nurse

HEAD LICE/NITS:

Please be vigilant in checking your child’s hair regularly. If you have treated your child’s hair then all eggs need to be combed out as well.We have had a number of reported cases in the community.

PREP-4 ATTENDANCE TROPHY:

Congratulations to grades 1 AR who won the attendance trophy for week 1 and Prep/1HJ for week 2.Regular school attendance helps your child to achieve their full educational potential. They are not able to actively engage with and participate in their learning without full and regular attendance.

It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age. Students who are regularly absent from school are at risk of missing out on important aspects of their educational and social development. We find that children not only fall behind academically but start complaining that they don’t have friends or have trouble maintaining friendships adding to their anxiety if they do miss school.

It is pleasing to see how many students are positively engaging in school this year and thank parents for assisting us in this regard.

UNIFORM:

As it is getting cold I need to remind everyone that the students should wear plain navy windcheaters and not colourful options. Scarves, gloves, jackets and beanies are also to be plain navy.

Windcheaters with hoods are not part of the school uniform. If purchasing new windcheaters please find options with plain necks. Students will be asked to leave the hoods down while at school as a safety concern and so that students are easily identifiable. If students need to be out of uniform, a uniform pass is obtained from Rhonda at our community office. Our College uniform can be purchased from Double C Jeanery in Aviation Road Laverton.
