Adapted from an award-winning play written by Austin-based writer Rupert Reyes, Vecinos: Love Thy Neighbor is the story of Roberto, a crotchety widower whose life turns upside down when Maria, a friendly widow hiding a secret, moves in next door.
Closer to Bottom (2017) Writer/Producer [Coming-of-Age]
Two brothers, mourning the loss of their father, fall in love with the same girl. Directed by Hollywood veteran Jesse Borrego, Closer to Bottom won “Best Texas Feature” at the 2017 Austin Indie Fest and a “Palma de Oro” at the 2018 Mexico International Film Festival.

The Reserve (2020) [Family Sports Drama]
Diego is the son of world-class athlete who chooses a path that his father doesn’t quite understand. With his own aspirations cut short, and his daughter looking to him for inspiration, Diego shows his family what the term “Heart of a Champion” really means.
Written during the 2020 pandemic, The Reserve was recently announced as a quarterfinalist and invited to participate in the Austin Film Festival (Writers Conference)
in October 2020.
Cerebral (2019) [Psychological Thriller]
Ruben is a family man and respected scholar. Tragically, a traumatic brain injury has left him fighting for his life. At first, his family is just happy that he survives. But as his wife Sonia struggles to hold their family together, she learns that the more her husband recovers, the darker and more frightening his new personality becomes.
As a script, Cerebral has performed well in several large screenplay competitions including: finalist in the Oaxaca Global Script Challenge (2019) and Filmmatic Screenplay

A.J. “Alex” Avila is a lifelong storyteller. He holds a B.S. in Radio-TV-Film, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Journalism, all from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a working journalist for 25 years with 12 years as an award-winning NPR producer. Also, from 1993-1999, he was co-director of the Austin-based Chicano/Latino Film Forum.
