Its short-term goal is to support promising organizations and networks that are promoting a more tolerant, plural and peaceful society.

Mission POWER99 Foundation’s mission is to transform education system as an effective tool for modern knowledge, alleviate poverty and develop social Institute of Community Empowerment and non-violent behaviors for peaceful coexistence.

For ensuring successful execution and operation of its programs and projects, POWER99 Foundation has a well-functioning office in Islamabad and project offices in Abbottabad and Vehari. RNN has produced daily Round up stories, News bulletins and series of programs on Human Rights, Minorities, child abuse, transgender rights and reproductive health which were aired through Partner FM channels in Punjab, Sindh KPK and Baluchistan to raise awareness and acquire information/opinion from community. Moreover, Women’s role has been downplayed in decision making, which naturally resulted in undemocratic gender disparity and systematic discrimination against women. Exclusion of women from the peace process directly discriminates against half of the population and deprives them of engagement in constructive political change and promotion of peace and love.

POWER99 Foundation’s activities have been recognized at the National and International level, having been awarded the following medals and prizes:

First Prize in Most Innovative Development Project category during 17th annual Global Development Network conference held on (18th of March 2016) for educational program “Broad Class – Listen to Learn” Interactive Radio Instruction Program.

2. DETAIL OF PROGRAMS IMPLEMENTED2.1 Human Rights Through RNN and Power FM 99, the Power99 Foundation has been producing and airing programs on human rights issues such as Haqooq Ki Baat, Dr. Farzana Bari Kay Sath, Murat Aik Qudrat and campaigning for gender equality and interfaith harmony

Haqooq ki Baat Farzana Bari k SathThe theoretical framework of program revolves around educating masses about their basic human rights and violations. The format of program includes interviews, live calls and expert opinions regarding access to information, violence against women, right to work, freedom of expression, right to have education, health, right to vote etc. the basic aim of the program is to create awareness, empower people to change. It is also acting as the platform where general public can have easy access to share their voices and get help.

Anti Ogling CampaignTo eradicate unethical act of ogling and cleanse mind set of the males, another milestone has been set through Anti ogling campaign. The construct of the program is to highlight starring and harassing gaze as shameful act. The purpose of campaign is to create awareness against this act which has become habit of some men. Women have equal right to go out of their home for work, shopping, recreation etc. but unfortunately here women have to face ogling which hurt them and shattered their confidence to step out. To change such behavior, anti-ogling awareness campaign is striving hard through live radio program, road show, audio messages and social media platform to spread their slogan “Say No to Taroo (ogle)”.

Transgender Program - Murat Aik Qudrat The most neglected segment of Pakistani society is “Transgenders”. They enjoy least amount of respect and rights in our society. Due to the controversial nature and typical mindset of people, the subject of Transgender rights in Pakistan is not even discussed in sophisticated circles. Most people do not even consider them as a part of their community; massive rejections are often faced by transgender in almost all the parts of Pakistan. In response to the prevailing situation of transgender in Pakistan the program Murat Aik Qudrat has been conceptualized, designed and produced to highlight issues of transgender in our society. The best part of the program is that it is planned, scripted and hosted by transgender so that they have freedom to express and share their experiences.

Power99 has also initiated live streaming of programs, news and discussions at: http://www.power99.com.pk/.

2.2 Environment and Sustainable Livelihoods Power99 Foundation believes POWER99 Foundation believes that sustainable and equitable management of natural resources is a prerequisite for sustainable development and poverty alleviation. KPK province and northern areas of Pakistan consisted of fragile mountainous ecology that has been constantly threatened by rapid depletion of its natural resource base, specially forests.

The 1992 floods caused by deforestation, caused tremendous damage to peoples’ life and social fiber, properties and livelihood especially in these areas. According to some estimates, Pakistan’s annual deforestation rate is 2.9 percent. POWER99 Foundation has been actively working with different NGOs, specially SUNGI, to promote sustainable use of forests in the backdrop of rapidly receding forest cover. POWER99 Foundation’s triggered with the help of some civil society organizations advocacy interventions by advocating improved agricultural methods and practices, improved livestock management, biodiversity conservation, biological pest control, and participatory forest management in the light of the recommendations by National Conservation Strategy. POWER99 foundation’s program seek following objectives in the realm of environment and sustainable livelihoods:1. Maintaining soils in croplands2. Increasing irrigation efficiency3. Protecting Watersheds4. Supporting Forestry and Plantation5. Restoring Rangelands and Improving Livestock6. Protecting Water Bodies and Sustaining Fisheries7. Conserving Biodiversity8. Increasing Energy Efficiency9. Developing and Deploying Renewable10. Preventing/Abating Pollution11. Managing Urban Waste12. Supporting Institutions for Common Resources13. Integrating Population and Environment Programs14. Preserving Cultural Heritage

POWER99 Foundation works to support ecological protection and, to do so, it has worked in wastewater, water supply and solid waste, as well as the importance of the municipal infrastructure development in general. It has also empowered children and youth targeting age group of 5-50 to take part in environmental protection, and awareness campaigns. Power 99 has worked with children and youth on programs like;

Young Green Club was one hour live interactive program for young children. The purpose of thematic program was to initiate a campaign of forming green club that had young children age (7-14 years), as club members and host. Their aim was to conduct field trip and identify any environment

related issue (waste material disposal, clean drinking water, plantation, sanitation etc.) and then produce report on it. The young children were encouraged and motivated via public broadcast to become member of that club and form green clubs in their own areas to create awareness and disseminate message about environmental protection.

Two to Tango: A thematic infotainment radio magazine show for children aged 9 to 14, combined music, games, trivia, quizzes, dialogues to build awareness and general knowledge, instill environmental literacy and responsibility. The 50 minutes episode focused on various environment related issues and awareness topics like; importance of water, water waste, natural resources, protecting animals (birds’ species) etc.

Go Green : The organization initiated 6 months “Go Green” campaign to raise awareness about ecological responsibility and environment protection. The sound track (Go Green) for the campaign was composed and produced, along with Public service message and special reports by the RNN team on environmental issues like, water wastage, water management, solid waste disposal, deforestation, climate change and sanitation).

Subah-e- Islamabad : Daily Two hour live interactive morning drive time show caters various segments; Environment Story, education, sports, news updates, show biz, environment, etc. every Monday the theme is environment with special reports and experts in studio that provides very useful information and knowledge to the listeners. To make it more authentic the experts also invited in the show.

Suno M oto is Radio News Network’s radio program that is broadcasted live every Saturday from different parts of the Potohar region. The unique aspect of this radio show is that the program’s video is shared on RNN’s YouTube channel, Twitter and Facebook.

The name Suno Moto is a play upon the legal term Suo moto. The term is employed when the court takes voluntary action on an issue in the interest of public, without waiting for someone to seek its verdict through litigation. Taking its inspiration from the legal term, RNN a partnership of radio stations with a civic agenda, has started Suno moto to initiate debate through open public forum in community spaces to hold accountable local government systems and authorities responsible to bring relief to people in relation to their rights and grassroots issues and problems.

The RNN team visits a Union Council in Islamabad and engages with the local residents, councilors, community elders, community activists to discuss a host of issues relevant to public interest. The program has become our radio’s flagship initiative has so far taken up immediate concerns like environmental issues, water pollution, scarcity of water, lack of facilities for higher education, poor

infrastructure, non-availability of facilities like natural gas, health centers, hygiene and sanitation, transport issues etc.

Environment is an issue that is close to hearts of POWER99 Foundation team and we seek to create awareness about the alarming levels of development that is not sustainable, leaving our future generations without any hope or a better tomorrow. This helps highlight and brings the voice of people – with a focus on local solutions for local problems – to decision makers and compel them to take action against mindless, unplanned development that flies in the face of government’s and official oversight and responsibilities to the citizenry, carried out in violation of commitments both constitutional and international

One of our success stories is that the deputy mayor of Islamabad Mr. Zeeshan Naqvi who participated in Sun moto liked the model so much that he started hosting a program Bolo Islambad on Power99 as a follow up to Suno moto to take calls from residents and take up their issues. RNN’s team started the program as a pilot in the Pothohar region. The feedback has been very positive and the results very encouraging, the team is now working on rolling out program to the other regions as well.

2.3 Educational Program: “Broad Class - Listen to Learn” Interactive Radio Instruction in Formal Schools: Since its inception, POWER99 Foundation is working on various children programs in collaboration with partner FM stations. Power99 Foundation implements innovative and interactive radio based programs for educational enhancement and sustainable peace-building in the light of Sufi teachings in line with national curriculum in Pakistan. The organization achieves this by making extensive use of its radio network and content development by involving experts, teacher and journalists training, capacity building (of teachers and journalists for sustainable peace building. The Broad Class program fulfills specific needs of religious schools (Madaris) in Pakistan. The program equipped the millions of children studying in religious schools with not just knowledge and practice of English language but critical knowledge, tolerance and skills. In addition to radio-delivered instruction, the program enriches the learning environment by engaging resources already available (including, for example, teachers, local cultural artifacts such as rhymes/songs, games and the environment, instructional materials in the classroom such as books and the blackboard, the expertise of local community members, and locally available material (such as bottle tops and sticks) to create a blend of good teaching and learning practice. https://www.facebook.com/broadclass/videos/1311047599013359/

The program has made classroom learning process interactive and playful attracting optimal attention of the students. The extensive training of teachers in child centered practices and involvement of parents in the classrooms as per their convenience constituted a paradigm shift. The evaluation reports show that the program has impacted on learning achievement of children, improved retention, improved classroom environment and involvement of communities/parents in school activities.

2.4 Addressing Gender Issues Despite Government of Pakistan’s international and national commitments and participatory role of multilateral and bilateral development partners towards promotion of gender equity and equality in education, statistics indicate that targets have remained unachieved except some pockets of progress. “Broad Class – Listen to Learn” Interactive Radio Instruction Program has played a significant role to reduce the gender disparity.

POWER99 Foundation’s program beneficiaries are mostly females (approx. 61%), who benefitted from program activities in various fields. POWER99 Foundation’s programs have helped in building their professional capacities to enhance career opportunities. Similarly, more than 52% of the total children enrolled in the educational program are girls. The program has given an opportunity to female students to participate in classroom activities without any biasness.

Pacific Region by ARNEC/UNESCO to support ECCE practitioners, researchers, international development partners, and policy development professionals.

2.6 Capacity Building and Mentoring ExpertisePOWER99 Foundation has designed and conducted training workshops to build professional capacities of individuals and institutions. The organization has conducted large number of extensive trainings in this regard. These trainings were designed according to the needs of the target audience. Our trainings assist the education administrators, teachers, faculty and staff of project units to become more effective staff developers and professional facilitators. Knowing the importance of a mentor in the life cycle of a project POWER99 Foundation has also trained government officials in mentoring skills and these mentors later take up the task of providing technical assistance when necessary.

POWER99 Foundation has also built capacities of Media professionals and Community Contributors in in reporting and production of radio programs. The community contributors are being provided mentoring services by the experts of POWER99 Foundation.

2.7 Community MobilisationThe community at large does not take responsibility for ensuring sustainable quality education in schools. POWER99 Foundation encurages involvement of communities in all its programs, that that they can take full ownership of the program. POWER99 Foundation team had meetings with more than 19,000 community members and parents of children in schools. The parents were oriented about IRI program and importance of education for their children. In addition, activities were designed on various educational themes such as Environment Day, family book, vegetables, pets and wild animals, traffic signals, health and hygiene, magic/polite words, professions, family tree and parents as helping hands etc. PTC members/parents appreciated the program and shared that the program is quite good and has increased children interest in education. Parents of children appreciated the IRI intervention in the classrooms and shared that the program is improving English learning and interest of children in education. Some of the parents shared that the healthy habits have also improved in children and now they regularly brush their teeth and ask for clean uniform for school.

2.8 Focus Group DiscussionPOWER99 Foundation uses Focus Group Discussion (FGD) as tool to conduct household, demographic, social and cultural survey of the target community. The FGD helps to identify the problem areas, situational/cultural/contextual and technological analysis. Recently

POWER99 Foundation

Page

11

FGD has been conducted in District of Baluchistan to analyze situation and challenges before intervention. The concluded FGD session suggested that most of the people live in outskirts of Baluchistan province are conservative, unprivileged and not educated with any access to infrastructure, basic utilities and technological facilities.

The socio-cultural mores of the people on the periphery of the city are still rural and conservative, with men not essentially urbanized in the way city men are, and therefore not holed up in homes in front of the TV or computer screen but out in the public space dominated by men. Little education and exposure and a conservative outlook make men and women loathe to TV but open to radio which is something they have inherited from their rural roots before they moved in the city’s orbit. This makes them avid listeners of radio because of the strong oral tradition locally.

For them radio is a cheap and accessible mode of information, especially for women they could learn about education, health and other issues. The views that the radio is an effective tool to “educate those who are not literate but can understand information in their own language” also dominate. Women, who have to work at home, also find it unobtrusive because it doesn’t get in the way of their chores. For women, radio is also important because they are confined to their homes and have little or no entertainment or engagement with the outer world so radio serves as a “window on the world” for them.

3. EXPERIENCE IN FINANCIAL SUPPORT SERVICESAll the programs and projects of POWER99 Foundation have regularly gone through both technical and financial audits by collaborating chartered accountants and donors. The monetary affairs of each program and project are handled by our expert staff in accordance with the financial procedures and regulations of the donor organization. Usually, the financial management by POWER99 Foundation includes and requires preparation, analysis and review of quarterly financial reports, quarterly, bi-annual and annual project activity reports, assistance for recruitment of financial staff for implementing partners and facilitation for carrying out financial audits.

For conducting authentic audits of its programs and projects, the organization is working in close collaboration with a QCR rated audit firm.
