Internship and Agency Description7 Communications Media is a media productions company in Raleigh, North Carolina

specializes in live sporting events across the country. The company was founded in 2014 when

owner, John Hoffmann met Mark Owens in church one Sunday. Hoffmann was able to supply

the money, while Owens provided the knowledge and the know how of how to get things going.

The company took a while to get off the ground, but this summer things really took off. The

company joined forces with Catch Multimedia, which is headed up by Adam Paul, a Emmy

winning producer. This has opened up the doors for multiple opportunities such as producing a

variety of football games in the Southeastern this season. Aside from that, the company works

with the Cal Ripken Baseball games in Branson, Missouri every summer as well as producing

videos for the Carolina Hurricanes. The company has a small office within the Carolina

Hurricanes practice facility, Raleigh Center Ice, and therefore is able to provide any necessary

shots that the hurricanes may need during their practice times.

My responsibilities as an intern in this start up company were very varied and allowed me

to get a full grasp of the company rather than just focusing on one area. I personally really

enjoyed this as it allowed me to work with different people and get a taste of all of the different

moving parts within the company. During different shoots my main responsibility as an intern

was mainly setting up and cleaning up after the shoot was done. This included running cable

from the trailer to the different cameras as well as making sure that all of the people working the

cameras had everything that they needed. When I was in the office my duties ranged from

working on updating the company’s web presence to inputting numbers into spreadsheets that

dealt with production costs. I was glad I was able to gain experience in different areas, as I

believe that this will help me in the long run because I now have a vast knowledge in many

different areas.

Internship Agency AnalysisCommunity Description

7 Communications Media has a small office within Raleigh Center Ice near downtown

Raleigh. This is where I spent most of my time during my internship working on a variety of

different projects. Raleigh’s growing population makes this a great place to start a business such

as this, especially with all of the different sports teams in the area like the Carolina Hurricanes,

Durham Bulls, and NC State University athletics. Raleigh currently has a population of just

fewer than half a million people at 439,896. The city also has a median resident age of 32.8 year

and 51.5% females to 48.5% males. According to a 2015 article on CNBC.com, Raleigh was 12th

in the nation as one of the best cities to start a business in.

There is a great diversity of ethnic groups in Raleigh, North Carolina with the largest

being Caucasian at 62.8%. African-Americans follow that up at 20% and Hispanics at 10.3%.

Unemployment in the city has decreased over the years, from 7.8% in 2010 to 4.6% in 2015, and

poverty is also down from 18.4% in 2010 to 16.6% in 2015. As you can tell, Raleigh is

improving in all different facets from population growth to employing more people making it a

great place for a start up company such as 7 Communications.

There are plenty of leisure/recreation/sport opportunities in the area. The Carolina

Hurricanes, Durham Bulls, and all of the local universities like NC State and UNC provide

plenty of both sport and business opportunities. There are also twenty-five different community

centers in the Raleigh area provided by The Raleigh Parks, Recreational, and Cultural Responses

Department. These centers provide recreation to the community with different activities for a

variety of different age ranges.

Marketing PlanSince 7 Communications is such a new company they rely heavily on the personal

connections that they have made since they started in the workforce. There is not a specific

marketing department since the company is so new. The company’s main target markets are

smaller sporting events, such a Campbell or James Madison. The company is able to pick from

the leftover games once the main broadcasting companies such as ESPN have chosen which

games they want to produce. The games are then produced on local television channels in the

area. 7 Communications also uses productionhub.com where they can apply for jobs and market

themselves to potential employers that they want to work for. They can provide trailer videos and

specifications on what they can and cannot produce. Some of the most direct competitors are

Triangle Video Production, which is a similar type of company to 7 Communications. Both of

these companies feed off of each other and will help each other out in trying to get business, but

sometimes they will clash heads trying to get the same job. I personally found it interesting that

both companies helped one another out in finding business rather than competing with each other

for every single job.

Organizational Structure and Culture7 Communications is a very small company and therefore only has a few people working

for the company. John Hoffmann is the owner of the company, and Mark Owens is the CEO.

These two were the ones who originally worked for 7 Communications. Once they paired with

Catch Multimedia other people were introduced into the company. This includes Adam Paul,

who is the Chief Creative Officer, Jeff Merritt who runs the EVP Post Production, and Adrian

West who is the Producer. Since the company is so small have contract two salesmen who go

around to different business pitching ideas about what 7 Communications can do and how it

would benefit their company. These salesmen do not work there full-time and are only

commission-based salaries. 7 Communications has a mission to strive to give the best quality

productions possible at the cheapest price point. They strive to provide, “big league production

for small market prices.” This is also due to the fact that it is an easier way to get business, but

with the production capabilities that they can provide, it won’t be long before clients are paying

big money to have 7 Communications produce for them.

Personal Practices7 Communications is a startup company that was just recently founded in 2014. Because

of this there are hardly any personal practices put into place. There are very few employees,

which means that there is no need for practices to be put into place. From what I was able to see

the hiring process was very relaxed and while I was there nobody was hired. The company

decides whom to work with based upon personal connections. As previously stated, since there

are so few employees there are no orientations or training related opportunities. When I came in

as an intern, I met everyone and was taught about where everything was located and how to work

the security system if needed. There was no formal orientation but I was not expecting to receive

one with how small the company is. There are no personal policies or rules put into place

because I believe that everybody understands how to be a professional and how to act in a

personal environment. I thought that it was really neat to see how everybody understood how to

act with each other and with the customers and nothing needed to be said about it. I believe that

this is the most effective way to manage the rules and regulations since the company is so small.

Eventually it may need to be formally addressed down the line as the company grows but as of

right now I believe that this is the most effective way to go about things. From what I could tell,

there are no motivational strategies for high performing staff. I can see something like this being

implemented as the company continues to grow, but for right now there is no need for something

as of this nature.

Financial Management SummaryDuring my time as an intern I was not personally involved in any of the financial

activities. As far as the economic environment goes, the company often faced different

challenges and opportunities. There is another company called, Triangle Video Production, in the

area that provides the same type of services that 7 Communications does. As I touched on it

earlier, they often competed to get certain jobs, but also would help each other gets jobs if one

company could not manage to do it. Also, since 7 Communications is a relatively new company,

bigger organizations may not want to hire them because of their perceived lack of experience.

That is why 7 Communications offers, “big league productions at small market prices.” The

revenues for the company comes from the productions that they produce, while the expenses

come from production costs as well as getting to company off the ground and all of the

equipment that was needed to start the company. As far as financial accountability and controls,

my supervisor was in charge of it. He puts all of the numbers into a spreadsheet and sends bills

and other things that need to be paid to an accounting person that is contracted by the company.

He then will balance the books.

Facilities and AreasCurrently, 7 Communications leases an office in Raleigh Center Ice where the Carolina

Hurricanes practice. The office that they have now is a perfect size for what they need to get

done and for the size of the company. As the company continues to grow, it may be beneficial to

seek other opportunities away from the current location. I was not able to get access to the

facilities maintenance plans, but I did see people coming in and cleaning the place before it

opened some days. As far as 7 Communications is concerned the company takes care of their

own office by vacuuming or cleaning up trash and whatnot, but since it is so small there is no

need for a cleaning service. There is no current long-term plan in place for the facility. A

recommendation that I have for the company would be to keep it at it’s current facility until the

company needs to start hiring more people to take on whatever demand may come their way. I

also think that staying close to downtown Raleigh would be beneficial for the company, and

would make it easier for the company to meet up with other companies in the area to discuss

business. 7 Communications definitely operates in a sustainable manner. The company tries to be

as environmentally stable as possible, which include things such as recycling and turning off the

lights when leaving the office. I think that the company is doing an admirable job of being as

environmentally friendly as possible, and do not have any current recommendations for how the

company could be more sustainable.

Programs/EventsThe majority of the programs and events for 7 Communications come from the

productions that they shoot. The majority of these events are related to sporting events, like

baseball, football and basketball. Currently, 7 Communications is running a series called

Saturday’s Down South where they film segments around the different colleges that they will

produce at on Saturday’s. The segments focus on what makes that a certain college stand out

among others. There are games each Saturday that range anywhere from James Madison in

Virginia to The Citadel in South Carolina. Occasionally, 7 Communications will film something

in a church or a concert but these productions are not on a large scale and are not a main source

of revenue for the company. I believe that the main reason behind doing these smaller shoots is

to extend the connections of the company so that later on down the road they can use them for

larger scale productions if need be. The target audiences of 7 Communications are sport-loving

fans that want to support their local team. Since the events that they produce are to smaller

markets, it provides an opportunity for smaller school to get exposure in the area that they may

not necessarily receive on a week-to-week basis. As the company continues to grow it will be

interesting to see whether or not they stay with just sports or branch out more and do other things

that they may not be used to.

Personal Evaluation/CritiqueInterning at 7 Communications was a rewarding and a learning experience for me.

Coming into the summer I was unsure of how I was going to like it and was quite nervous. After

the first couple of weeks, I realized that I made a great decision to intern at 7 Communications. I

was pleased with the work that I did over the summer and was glad that I interned here.

Coming into the summer I did not have much knowledge on media productions and how

a live event got produced on the television. It was definitely an eye opening experience and I was

glad that I was able to be apart of it. I was widely impressed with how smooth things ran during

the different productions. There are so many moving parts within a television trailer with people

coming in and out and multiple people talking at once it was definitely something I enjoyed

getting to witness. It taught me personally the value of communication and just how important it

is to someone’s success with being a professional.

Some area’s that 7 Communications can improve on are planning better ahead of time

and having a back up plan. There were often times during a production when people would

realize that they did not have everything that they needed to make something work, and they

would then have to go out and get whatever they needed which would then put them under a time

crunch. Also, there was a time when the wrong camera lens was brought to a shoot so the

company had to improvise with what they had. A mistake like this could have been easily

prevented if someone had just checked to make sure that they had everything that they needed

before coming to the production.

Overall, my internship experience with 7 Communications was one that I really enjoyed

and was glad that I was able to be apart of it. Looking back of it now, I definitely learned a lot

and while I may not pursue media productions I learned much more than that and met a lot of

people that hopefully I can turn to for professional help and development in the future.

Job Description: Intern will work within the company assisting on a variety of different productions and video shoots. The intern will work closely will Emmy winning director, Adam Paul, to work on a website plan for both of the companies as they become close partners. Intern will look for potential clients with contracted sales representative of 7 Communications as well as creating a web presence for the company, including Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Special ProjectMy special project was to create was to create a web presence for 7 Communications.

This included creating a redesigned website and a Facebook page. This summer 7

Communications partnered with Catch Multimedia, which is headed by Emmy winning

producer, Adam Paul. I worked closely with Adam Paul to redesign both company’s website into

one. I also created a Facebook page for the company, which provided them a way for potential

clients to search for them and see what the company is producing. The Facebook page has been

wildly successful growing to over 200 likes. It has especially taken off the past couple of weeks

during the college football season. Before and during each game photos will be posted to the

Facebook page for people to see a behind the scenes look at what it looks like to produce a

college football game. It has been really great to see the positive response that the page has

gotten.

This has greatly impacted the company and people are starting to take note of the great

work that 7 Communications is able to do on these productions. It has allowed them to expand

their database of potential clients. The website has also helped the company grow its potential

database of clients. I really enjoyed creating the website as I had never done something like that

before. I was glad that I had Adam Paul to guide me along the way and give me some tips and

recommendations for what would work best for both companies. In the end, I am extremely

happy with the way that it came out, and I am glad that I was able to learn from this experience. I

came up with this special project because I realize the importance of being active on the Internet.

It seems as just about every company has some sort of social media presence and I knew that in

order for 7 Communications to continue to expand that it would need to have some sort of social

media presence as well as an updated website. While it may seem like such a simple idea to me it

was not something that Mark Owens or anybody else had thought up, and I put that down to

them not growing up in a world where social media was such a factor like it is in today’s world. I

knew that coming in this was something that I wanted to work on for the company, and I am glad

that I was given the opportunity to do so. Working closely with someone like Adam as well was

such a great experience as well and I am glad that he was so helpful throughout the process.

Overall, creating a web presence for 7 Communications was something that the company

definitely needed and I am glad that I was able to help out and be able to help the company grow

and possibly find new potential clients.

Weekly PostsWeek 1The first forty hours of my internship at 7 Communications have been an eventful one. While I

actually started this internship more than a week ago, I have just completed my first forty hours.

Things have been going well settling down into my role as an intern. I am the only intern with

the company and since the company is four years old the employees are numbered. This has

allowed me really create a connection with each and every one of them though, which is

something that I have been trying to take full advantage of. Whenever I can, I try to "pick the

brains" of the employees which has lead to some valuable knowledge. The company is located

on Hodges Road in the Raleigh Center Ice Complex, which is actually where the Carolina

Hurricanes practice. This has led to a strong partnership between the two organizations, which

has been cool to see. During my first week as an intern, I was surprised by just how many

meetings are required for an organization. While this is partially due to the fact that the

organization needs to go out and pitch ideas in order to get work there always seems to be some

type of meeting each and everyday. I have been fortunate enough to sit in on some of those

meetings, and have been able to pick up some valuable information from them. During my next 2

weeks, I anticipate finding more of a niche within the office. Since the organization is so new I

am able to explore each aspect of what makes it function so I am looking forward to settling

down into a certain role. I have received the following types of orientations so far which have

included a tour of the office and equipment as well as expectations of me as an intern. I have

been able to talk to my supervisor about the organizational information that I will need in order

to complete my portfolio, and there will be no problem in obtaining it all. My supervisor was

very compliant and was willing to give me whatever I needed for the portfolio. I am looking

forward to what the rest of this internship.

Week 2The biggest issue that I have dealt with during my internship have been my lack of a defined

schedule. I do not go in everyday to the office, but instead often will work on assigned items

from my apartment. Unlike typical internships I am not working 9 to 5, Monday through Friday,

and I am often creating my own hours. This is something that I have had to adjust to, because I

am a person that likes to have things defined where I know what I will be doing everyday. This

has provided a learning experience for me, and has taken some getting used to, but slowly I am

growing more and more into this roll. My main responsibilities during my first 2 weeks has been

cleaning and organizing the office and trailer, creating spreadsheets for contacts, schedules, and

other things. I have also been heavily involved in the social media and marketing aspect of the

company and have been learning on successful habits to market the company. In the coming

weeks, I will be able to put together everything that I am learning together as the company is

going to be shooting many different things such as, baseball games and things with the Carolina

Hurricanes.

Week 3Interning at a start up company has meant more of an unconventional experience for me and that

translates to company policies. There are no set organizational policies, as there is really no need

for them considering the small size of the organization. While it is not written in actual writing,

one thing that I have seen as a policy is being personable. 7 Communications has to go out and

look for their work and they always follow up after a meeting. While I know that this is

commonplace in the work place, it is nice to see that 7 Communications goes above and beyond

with their clients. One thing that I have learned about my own interpersonal skills with people I

interact with is my ability to communicate with them. Being an intern, means that I don't have as

much pull in the company as other people do. I still have been able to share my ideas and feel

like I am actually contributing to the company rather than just observing what is going on. This

is something that has excited me and I am looking forward to what I can contribute in the future.

As I just mentioned, being an intern does not allow me the most power, but since the company is

a start up and has few employees I have been able to benefit from this. It has allowed me to share

ideas and give my input that may actually be used. Things are going well so far, it has been cool

to see how things that I actually learn in my classes are translating to this internship. I have

particularly found my PRT 466 to be the most useful. I have been able to see the financial side of

the company and what a real life budget analysis is like and how a company has to manage their

money in order to pay employees and order expenses. I am enjoying what I am learning in the

field thus far, and am looking forward to the rest of my time at the company.

Week 4My special project is going to consist of two different things. One of those to set up a

internet/social media presence, because as of right now all that the company has is a website. The

second part of my special project is going to be filming a behind the scenes look at what exactly

goes into production. That includes filming from setting up, to the event, and then packing up all

of the equipment. Currently, I have started a Facebook and Twitter page for the company and

want to next work on updating the website. I will be filming the behind the scenes look during a

football game in the fall. One thing from that I have found most relevant from one of my classes

that has helped me as an intern is my budget assignment during PRT 466. This is something that

I have really valued because it puts into perspective what exactly the cost of creating a

production is like. Since this company is a start-up and has not yet established itself, there are no

actual stated policies. I decided that 2 agency personal policies that I feel are important to my

organization is to leave an event cleaner than you found it. I recently helped out at the Coastal

Plains League All Star Game and we set up our own area outside of the stadium. There were

cables and boxes and a food table set up, and we wanted to make sure that we left no trace that

we were there when we left. Also checking in with the event organizer is important during a

production. Making sure that they are satisfied with the product we are producing is important

and really creates a professional atmosphere. The organization pays well for high performing

staff during events as well as provides them with meals and drinks during the production to make

sure that they can do what they need to do and perform at the highest possible for them.

Experiencing this first hand, I can definitely say that it is effective. I was able to stay hydrated

and was not hungry and this allowed me to have energy sustained throughout the production. I

looked over the portfolio requirements, and I do not have any questions or concerns at the

moment.

Week 5One area of professional growth that I would like to see for the second half of my internship

would be to take more initiative. While I get things done on time, one thing that I struggle with is

doing things before I have been told to do so. I think that this will come with more experience as

I learn more of what needs to be done to make the company successful. An interaction that I had

with a client that had meaning to me was meeting one of the assistant athletic directors at ECU,

Shelley Binegar. While I didn't actually talk to her one on one I was able to see my organization

pitch her an idea. She was very knowledgeable about what needed to happen to benefit ECU, and

asked the tough questions. I enjoyed being able to witness this as it is important in business

meetings to sort through what you want to hear and what would actually happen if an idea came

to fruition. An interaction that I have had with a specific staff member that has been important to

me is meeting with the salesman, John Kerr that the company contracts to find work. I was able

to observe him for a day and pick his brain with some of the knowledge that he has. This is

something that I really valued because both sales and knowing how to successful communicate

with potential clients is a big part in the business world. Taking care of myself during this

internship has been important as I can sometimes get frustrated or feel as if not doing such a

great job. I have been able to work out a routine for myself where I go work out, play basketball,

or so other sort of physical activity after work. This clears my mind from work that day. As far

as cognitive and emotional self-care I usually read the Bible and that helps remind me of my self

worth and helps me cope with any problems that may come my way.

Week 6One entertaining story that has happened so far at my internship was meeting one of the assistant

athletic director's at ECU, Shelley Binegar. This was actually my first day on the job and was

quite the day as I immediately jumped right into things. I'm glad that I was able to experience

something like this as it gave me a real life example of what my internship would be about. Two

skills that I have used this far are my organizational and people skills. I have found out that these

two things are especially important in my internship in order to create a successful media

production. It is important to make sure that the equipment is where it is supposed to be as well

as making sure that you understand what the director wants. Handling pressure as an intern was

something that I struggled with at first, but have realized how to deal with it. I usually just take a

few seconds away from whatever I am doing to collect myself and reassure myself that I can do

whatever the task is at hand. While I do not use an software applications on production shoots

the company as a whole uses lots of different equipment from microphones to high resolution

cameras. Since I am an intern I am just learning about these tools. Two of my professional

strengths are being organized and attentive. Two things I need to work on are my initiative and

my ability to thrive in pressure situations.

Week 7One thing that I did that helped a staff member this week was run errands. My supervisor was

quite busy throughout the week in different meetings finalizing things for the upcoming football

season. I helped him out by running errands and holding down the office but taking care of any

administrative things such as picking up packages and grabbing lunch for anybody that was in

the office. One thing that I did to help the agency was to do a mass cleaning of the trailer where

we produce all of our shows. This included scrubbing and cleaning the outside, as well as wiping

down and organizing all of the equipment. Something that helped my own learning was when my

supervisor was out in meetings. I was in charge of taking care of the office and making sure the

list that I was given of things to do was checked off. I really enjoyed this type of freedom as it

allowed me to really get a sense of what my career could be like having freedom and not having

someone constantly look over your shoulder. One staff member that has been a positive role

model for me has been the agency's investor. This person helped create change in me by giving

me the confidence to take on something that I had minimal experience in. On the first video

shoot I was tasked with carrying the cable around for the on-field cameraman. It was a bit hectic

at first, but he came down and assured me that I was doing a good job. It gave me the confidence

to finish the job, and I am definitely grateful for that. He also stops by the office occasionally to

check things out and make sure that I am doing well which has been great.

Week 8One incident that produced conflict was at the office when I was needed to take pictures of the

Hurricanes practicing during one of their closed practices. The sign on the door leading to the ice

rink said it was a closed practice, and it felt wrong for me to be doing what I was doing. I wanted

to respect their privacy but also get the pictures that I need for my supervisor. I was able to talk

to one of the managers at the practice and was able to take pictures for five minutes or so. I was

glad that this was not made out to be a super big ordeal, but it was something that required me to

use my feelings for what is right and what is wrong. The traits needed to be successful at my

agency are strong time management skills, organized, and able to deal with any "curveballs" that

may come your way. It is important to stay on your toes at the agency, as you never really know

what may come your way. The attitude and skills a successful intern needs is a positive attitude

and a quick ability to learn anything as well as being able to implement what you have learned

quickly when you're in the field. I think that the positive attitude is most important because

interns are not high in the pecking order, but it is important to still do what you're told and trust

that everything will work out in the end. My special project was creating a social media presence

(Facebook and Twitter) as well as redesigning the website and helping to put in all together. I

think that both have turned out to be successful as the agency did not have any social media

presence before the summer and the website was outdated. Now after my special project I can be

proud of what I have put together and I hope that the agency will use it for years to come.

Week 9My internship advisor, Mark Owens, has been good for the most part. One thing that he can work

on is his communication with others. He sometimes will just assume that people know what

needs to get done, but as an intern I sometimes struggled with this, especially in the beginning of

my internship. As time went on, I began to know what to do without being told, but definitely

needed some more guidance in the beginning of the internship. I plan on giving my supervisor

honest feedback when I sit down to do the final evaluation with him. I think that this will be a

good time for both him and I to express our feelings with how we both did this summer. I am

looking forward to it as I am excited to get some feedback that I can use going forward in my

professional career. During my internship, I would definitely say that my supervisor has had the

greatest effect on. I have been extremely grateful for the tips and recommendations that he has

given me throughout the process, and they are definitely ones that I will continue to use going

forward. He has not only taught me about media productions but also important lessons outside

of that, about how to be a successful professional. Whether or not I will pursue a career in media

productions remains to be seen, and even if I do not I have many valuable lessons that I have

learned that I will be able to use in whatever field I decide to go into.

Week 10The positive aspects of my internship was using things that I had learned in the classroom and

putting them into action. This was something that I was really looking forward to doing and I am

glad that I was given the chance to do so. I also enjoyed interaction with other professionals in

the field and observing how they handled themselves in certain situations. One thing that could

be improved would be a more straight forward line of communication between my supervisor

and myself. I know that he was busy finding jobs, but I feel like there could of been better

communication on his end. The most beneficial aspects of the internship for me was observing

people that I interacted with. I would often observe what they were doing and then ask questions

if I was confused on certain things. I learned things like body language and how to speak

"professionally" in different settings. I would advise other students to take an internship with this

organization. During my internship the company was beginning to take on more and more work

so the next person may not get to see every aspect of the company like I was able to. They may

instead have to focus on one certain area since the company is growing rapidly. They would get a

hands on experience where they are not always behind a desk and instead out in the field

applying what they have learned. Looking at my response from Week 1 my expectations were

met. I wanted to make connections with the employees there and I definitely feel like I was able

to do this with the size of the company being so small. I am glad that the size of the organization

allowed me to interact with everyone involved as I believe that this will benefit me greatly later

on down the line. The courses that I found particularly applicable for me during my internship

were PRT 466, PRT 286, and PRT 476. I found that these three courses were ones that I could

draw from in my experience as an intern. I think that the internship experience as a whole is one

that is complete and well put together from NC State's perspective. There is plenty of ways to

remain engaged and ask question of your intern supervisor if needed, and I really enjoyed the

experience as a whole.
