Weekly Literacy Review Book
Dear Parents and Guardians,Each week the children are introduced to a new poem which will come home every Tuesday in this Weekly Literacy Review Book. These poems represent reading as a meaningful language process through literature and songs and will be used as a tool to review and consolidate vocabulary and language skills studied each day. Remember that children who are encouraged by their parents and family will like to read and will learn to read more quickly. Please encourage your child to read these poems to you. If your child has difficulty, read poems together and have your child point to each word while reading. After your child has read the poem, ask him/her to practise writing the Words of the Week, Doozers (extra weekly words), and Word Family Words and the sounds. Suggestions for homework are also included each week. The back of the page can be used to answer the questions asked. Some other activities you can try:
Point to words at random and ask your child to read them Look for rhyming words in the text Look for two/three/four syllable words (e.g., welcome: wel-come) Look for contractions (e.g., can’t, wouldn’t, I’ll) Find the longest or shortest sentence Count words in a sentence
Every week I will send out a blog telling you which poem we are working on for the week. You do not need to send the work in because an adult should be assisting and correcting the work when needed.Sincerely,
Mrs. Deguire

Poem of the WeekLife of a Plant
A plant will grow from a tiny seed,Some water and sun is all you need.
First the roots grow underground,They suck up minerals from all around.
Then come stems, some tall, some stout,And next the branches spread about.
Leaves grow in all shapes and sizes,Watch this new life as it rises.
Flowers bloom from buds on stems,They are as pretty as precious gems.
Some plants give us juicy fruit,Some have vegetables at the root.
New seeds travel to and fro,By wind and water, on the go.
And the cycle keeps on going,Soon new stems and leaves are showing.

Poem of the WeekLife of a Butterfly
A pretty butterfly begins by laying all her eggs.Out pops a caterpillar crawling on its legs.First the caterpillar is very, very thin. But it eats and eats until it bursts its own skin!
Soon the caterpillar has grown nice and big.So it finds a tiny leaf or twig.It makes a chrysalis and there it hangs inside. The chrysalis soon cracks and then the parts divide.
Now here’s a fact that’s really, really strange;Inside the chrysalis there’s been a major change!
