English: ‘Taking Flight’ This half term, we are learning about intrepid explorers. We can use stories and imagination to be great explorers. This week we will be looking at a film on the ‘Literacy Shed’ website called ‘Taking Flight’. There is a link for this film later in the task information to click on. Task 1: The ‘front cover’ Look at this ‘front cover’ of the film. What clues can you see that tell you what the story might be about? Look at the title, the picture and the characters. What do you think this tells us about the film? Do you have any questions you would like to ask? Task 2: The Opening For this task you only need to watch the first 1 minute 15 seconds of the film. Freeze the film at 1 minute 15 seconds in and don’t watch any more. You might want to watch this part 2 or 3 (or more) times as you will probably notice more details each time you watch it. looking at a film on the ‘Literacy Shed’ website called ‘Taking Flight’.

Task 2: The OpeningFor this task you only need to watch the first 1 minute 15 seconds of the film. Freeze the film at 1 minute 15 seconds in and don’t watch any more. You might want to watch this part 2 or 3 (or more) times as you will probably notice more details each time you watch it. If you really can’t wait and you feel you need to watch the whole film, go ahead and do it but then go back and re watch this first section.

Imagine you are Tony. How do you feel at this point in the story? What do you think is going to happen today? Why do you think this? How do you feel about Dad? How do you feel about Grandpa? What do you wish you were doing? Write a paragraph imagining you are Tony talking to his teddy whilst sitting on the cardboard box. You can invent a name for his toy if you like. If you need a sentence to start your writing you could use: ‘I’m feeling so fed up, Teddy….’

Task 3: Tony’s Feelings

Today you will watch the whole of the film ‘Taking Flight’: https://www.literacyshed.com/takingflight.htmlYou might choose to watch the film more than once as you will notice extra details each time you watch it. Now think about how Tony is feeling at different stages in the film. Watch the film with an adult or sibling and point out to them how, when and why Tony’s feelings change as the story develops.

Task 4: Dear Diary

Imagine you are Tony. Write about your day with Grandpa. You could

either choose to do this as a diary or as a letter to a friend. Write about what happened to you and choose one part of the day to write about in

more detail. Remember to tell the reader about how you felt and include details to make it interesting.

Remember to write in the first person (use I, me, my, our, we) Try to use conjunctions to join and extend your sentences. Maybe

you could use some of these: because, so, as, when, but, or and and If you need a sentence to start your writing you could use: What an incredible day I’ve just had!Task 5: Alien Encounter

In the film, Tony and Grandpa meet aliens but we do not see them in the film. Draw a picture of the alien that might be inside the space craft and write a description of them. Remember to try and include:

adjectives and other great word choices to add description prepositions to begin sentences (e.g. ‘On his head….’ or ‘In his

hand…’)
