Listening and speaking

The hidden elements:

MoodThe mood of the story is the

atmosphere that the narrator creates while telling

the story. Stories can be funny or tragic, serious or light-hearted. A story can

make you feel happy or sad.

TimelineMost stories consist of a sequence of events. The narrator sets the scene in

the introduction. In the middle part tension starts

building. As the suspense or tension builds up, the reader wants to see how the story

ends. The may be happ, sad or funny. A good story keeps the listener interested until

the end.

Ironic TwistAn ironic twist is a sudden change in the story or a surprising turn of

events. Like for example "Little Red Riding Hood" end with a totally

unexpected scene. Everyone knows Riding Hood is a naive girl who

depends on others to rescue her. In the story, however, she pulls out a

revolver and shoots the wolf.

ToneBoth the narrator's words

and his or her tone of voice contribute to the mood of the story. The narrator may use a sad

tone of voice when telling a sad story or an amused tone of voice when telling

a funny story.

Hooting owls

I have such a heart-warming story. The story, which I am not making up, concerns a man named Neil, who discovered an owl nesting in his garden. Each night, Neil would go outside and hoot to the owl. To his delight, he’d hear a hoot in reply; then he’d hoot some more.

This went on night after night, month after month; Neil even kept a log of his conversations with the owl. Then, one day, Neil’s wife got to talking about this with a neighbour, who said that her husband, whose name was Fred, had also been going out every night to hoot to the owl.

At this point, the woman realised that their husbands had in fact spend an entire year hooting to each other, the owl was not involved at all!!

Inside these little holes are oil glands that produce sebum, a special oil that

keeps the hairs and skin soft and moist. As your body changes, you secrete

hormones that tell the oil glands to produce more sebum.

The glands go into overdrive and there’s too much oil mixing with dead skin,

which then blocks the pores. When bacteria enter the pores, the blockage

becomes a pimple that swells and turns red.

Various kinds of spots:

You get pimples which are big and inflamed spots; whiteheads with white

pus; blackheads, which are those black, oily spots; and blind pimples that

forms deeper under the skin.

Good advice:

Eat healthily. A diet high in fat, sugar and oil can aggravate production of sebum, which

leads to acne. Sunlight in moderation is good for spots because it dries out the oil on

your skin.

Does toothpaste kill zits?

A small amount of toothpaste is just a quick fix. It won’t help with serious acne but it’s

inexpensive and can reduce swelling and dry out small spots. Use without fluoride and

bleaching agents. Be warned: these ingredients my burn or dry out your skin.

What you can do:

Don’t squeeze pimples out unnecessarily because you might damage your skin. If you

absolutely must do something about a pimple, make sure your hands are

clean and use a tissue around your fingers. Never use your nails to

squeeze a pimple as there are a lot of dirt and bacteria under the nails.

Secrete: let out

Produce: make

Inflamed: red and swollen

Aggravate: make worse

Acne: a bad skin condition

Provided that you squeeze pimples correctly and wash your face twice a day, you’ll be

safe.
