Resources Used
AISC Steel Construction Manual, 13th edition
IBC 2012 Loads
Load Deflection Tables, AISC ASD 8th edition
Preliminary Beam Design Equations (deflection, moment,
etc.)
SAP Analysis Procedure
· Create grid lines for the given floor plan
· Draw beams, girders, and columns onto the grid and copy to selected heights
· Apply dead and live loads to allocated areas and copy to selected heights
· Run analysis to view moment, shear, axial forces/diagrams
· Design steel members until there are no inconsistencies within the structure
Assumptions
· Simply supported
· Building 1: one way distribution
· Building 2: two way distribution
· Connected to the ground by pins (eliminates moment at anchor)
· Released joint restraint (eliminates moment in the joints)

Comparisons (SAP vs. Excel)
· Interior Beam: SAP - W14x48 ; Excel - W18x35
· Interior Girder: SAP - W21x48; Excel - W21x44
· Exterior Beam: SAP - W14x38; Excel - W14x26
· Exterior Girder: SAP - W12x30 ; Excel - W14x26
Conclusions
Recommended member sizes differ slightly between SAP and Excel. Members are similar because the information used to size them is generally the same, but SAP has the capacity to take more than the deflection, tributary area, and point loads into account. Both methods make the structural sizing process much faster.
