The Maserati of SUVs In 2016, a new wind was unleashed in the luxury SUV segment with the arrival of the Levante. The Maserati of SUVs MY18 has been further improved and enhanced with a range of new features for an even more thrilling driving experience – both on- and off-road. New range strategy GranLusso and GranSport trims Electric Power Steering (EPS) New Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS)The Levante premiered at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, announcing the arrival of Maserati in the world’s largest luxury segment. It was a turning point that reaped huge rewards: from its launch until June 2017, 25,000 Levante cars were sold in 72 countries around the world, making it the highest-selling Maserati in that time.

The MY18 Levante made its world premiere at the 2017 Frankfurt Motorshow with a new range strategy and an array of hi-tech features, including EPS and the addition of new active functions to the existing driving assistance systems.

The new range strategy – inaugurated by the Quattroporte in 2017 and continued by the Levante and the new Ghibli for MY18 – introduces two distinct new trims alongside the three existing powertrain versions: the luxury-orientated GranLusso and the red-blooded GranSport.

The Levante is manufactured on its own state-of-the-art production line on the recently redeveloped Mirafiori plant in Turin. And while cutting-edge automotive technology is used throughout the process, skilled technicians man each station, keeping the assembly very much a handcrafted affair, from initial design through to final production.

When it came to quality and reliability, the engineers and technicians put the Levante through a rigorous testing process. A fleet of 34 Levante prototypes took part in 2.7 million kilometres of testing, taking the car to locations never before seen by a Maserati vehicle — from the intense heat of South Africa to the extreme cold of Sweden and New Zealand.

Design, Exclusivity and Performance Based on the evolution of the Ghibli/Quattroporte platform, the Levante chassis has been developed to offer unique on-road driving dynamics and competitive off-road capabilities, combined with supreme riding comfort and day-to-day practicality. The premium Italian SUV was conceived around three main pillars: design, exclusivity and performance, and the restyled model still represents the optimum blend of these three elements.

The car’s design combines coupé lines with interior space for five people, while achieving best-in-class aerodynamic efficiency with a drag coefficient of just 0.31. The exclusivity of the Levante stems from standard-fit technical features such as Adaptive Air Suspension and the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System.

The Maserati of SUVs was engineered to excite the sport-focused drivers by making extensive use of lightweight materials, as well as boasting an ideal 50:50 weight distribution and the segment’s lowest centre of gravity. These features deliver unparalleled agility in the luxury SUV class.

The aluminium double-wishbone, five-link suspension layout comprises standard Air Springs and electronically-controlled Skyhook shock absorbers. In conjunction with the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System and the torque vectoring system, the chassis delivers GT on-road dynamics and surprising off-road capabilities – the Levante was engineered to deliver luxurious comfort on rough roads and great handling on low-grip surfaces.

The MY18 Levante has adopted EPS in place of hydraulic power steering. EPS improves the car’s handling and comfort, better

supports the driving modes, and enables the newly- introduced active ADAS functions. Last but not least, EPS retains the razor-sharp steering feel expected of any Maserati.

The Levante entered the SUV segment in 2016 with a marked advantage in terms of new equipment. The car’s innovative features included a state-of-the art infotainment system with 8.4” touchscreen display and an aluminium double rotary knob on the lower central console. Levante was also the first Maserati model to feature Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Forward Collision Warning Plus (FCW Plus), Advanced Brake Assist system (ABA), Lane Departure Warning system and Surround View Camera.

An enhanced ADAS package is optionally available with the MY18 Levante, which includes new active functions such as Highway Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.

When it comes to its engine, the Maserati of SUVs is equipped with the latest evolution of the Maserati 3.0-litre V6 engines. The two twin-turbo petrol engines and the economical turbodiesel are globally acclaimed for their Maserati signature sound and exceptional performance.

The V6 petrol engines come with the latest Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) and twin-turbo technologies and feature maximum power outputs of either 430 hp or 350 hp. The flagship Levante S reaches 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 264 km/h, while the 350 hp Levante makes it to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and offers a maximum speed of 251 km/h.

The Levante is also available with a common-rail, direct-injection V6 turbodiesel with reduced dwell-time injectors. The 3.0-litre V6 engine is capable of 275 hp and delivers 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, with a top speed of 230 km/h, while keeping the fuel economy as low as 7.2 litres/100 km under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

Both petrol engines and the V6 turbodiesel use an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox, providing seamless comfort and fast gearshifting as needed. The driver can choose between four modes: Normal, I.C.E., Sport and Off-Road. Each one uses different settings, intelligently altering engine, transmission, suspension and electronic settings when required. The eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox has been fine-tuned for even quicker gearshifting on the MY18 range.

With the new Maserati range strategy, the customer can choose one of two distinct trims: the GranLusso and GranSport. Both are available as an upgrade to all Levante powertrain versions. The two trims will be priced at the same level across the range in major markets (Europe, USA and China) and are immediately recognisable thanks to their unique exterior design and exclusive interiors.

GranLusso & GranSport: two expressions of LevanteElegance and luxury reign in the Levante GranLusso with its enhanced exterior finish and array of on-board features for added comfort. The GranLusso trim is externally recognisable by its metallic-finish front skid plates and roof rails, the GranLusso badges on the front wings, the body-colour side skirts, the black-painted brake calipers and the 19” Zefiro alloy wheels.

The GranLusso cabin combines a choice of Ermenegildo Zegna silk or full premium Italian upholstery with a Radica open-pore wood trim and leather steering wheel. The uniquely luxurious trim also includes standard 12-way power comfort seats, a Harman Kardon Sound System, power-adjustable steering wheel, illuminated door sills, parking sensors, navigation system and new Soft Close Doors.

The Levante GranSport was conceived to meet the demands of customers seeking a sportier expression of a high-end SUV, and as such both the exterior design and interior features reflect the

Externally, the GranSport is recognisable by its Piano Black front grille, skid plates and roof rails, GranSport badges on the front wings, body-colour side skirts, blue inserts on all Trident and Saetta logos, red brake calipers and 20” Nereo wheels.

The Sport 12-way power leather seats and power-adjustable Sport steering wheel combine with a carbon trim to create an exciting, sporty interior in the GranSport. It also features a Sport steering wheel with standard gearshift paddles, power-adjustable Inox sport pedals, parking sensors and navigation system.

Italian flair in the high-end SUV classThe Maserati Design Centre in Turin created the Levante with the aim of bringing an uncompromising style to the SUV world, combining sporty coupé lines with impressive interior space. Best in class drag coefficient 0.31 Air Shutter as standardThe Maserati of SUVs is instantly recognisable from a distance, thanks to its imposing grille inspired by the sensational Alfieri concept. The concave grille pays homage to historical Maserati models like the Tipo 60 Birdcage and has become a signature feature of all Maserati models since its adoption by the Levante. Its emblematic shape is accentuated by the front wings, highlighting the flow of the bonnet. The particularly effective headlights featuring Bi-Xenon and LED technology blend into the Trident symbol at the centre of the grille.

The silhouette of the Levante flows along the side of the car from the feline headlights to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, creating a coupé look that is enhanced by frameless doors – a signature look of Modern Maserati cars. The muscular shape of the rear haunches underscores the car’s definitively Italian style.

The rear pillar is refined by the insertion of the characteristic Saetta logo, first seen on the iconic Quattroporte in 1963 and seamlessly following the shape of the side windows. A swaged line running along the entire length of the car defines its profile. It

begins at the signature front side vents and dissolves over the rear wing, emphasising the Levante’s muscular shape and underlying strength.

Thanks to its 3-metre wheelbase (6-10 cm longer than that of its major competitors) the 5-metre-long Levante combines one of the roomiest high-end SUV cabins with the sportiest design in the segment.

Best-in-class aerodynamicsMaserati has invested in advanced measuring methods for the aerodynamic tests on the Levante in order to simulate real-life conditions accurately. Meticulous virtual environment simulations and extensive tests in the Turin wind tunnel have resulted in a class-leading drag coefficient Cd of 0.31.

During the lengthy aerodynamic testing programme, Maserati engineers concentrated on optimising the air flow around and inside the car. They worked hard to maximise air flow in the concave grille and in the wheel-arch area.

Complementing the technical sophistication and inspired aerodynamic design is an electric Air Shutter in the front grille. Located between the front air vents and the engine’s radiator, the shutter controls the air flow to the engine compartment through the continuous, electronically-controlled movement of the blades.

This provides multiple benefits, both for the engine (by optimising engine temperature) and in terms of efficiency by reducing the car’s aerodynamic drag and therefore also the Levante’s fuel consumption and emissions.

GranLusso and GranSport trimsThe new Levante GranLusso ushers in a new era of elegance with its enhanced exterior finish. Externally, the GranLusso model is distinguished by its front skid plates, metallic-finish roof rails, GranLusso badges low on the front wings, body-colour side skirts, black-painted brake calipers and 19” Zefiro alloy wheels.

The new Levante GranSport model was conceived to meet the needs of customers looking for a sportier expression of a high-end SUV. Its exterior design cues reflect the legendary racing heritage of the Maserati brand.

Externally, the GranSport is recognisable by its Black Piano front grille, skid plates and roof rails, GranSport badges on the front wings, body-colour side skirts, blue inserts on all Trident and Saetta logos, red brake calipers and 20” Nereo wheels.

Intelligent Bi-Xenon and LED lightsLevante front lights are especially effective thanks to Bi-Xenon headlights with optional Adaptive Front Lighting system (AFS) and LED technology for the Daytime Running Lights (DRL), indicators and standard fog lights.

The LED DRLs deliver maximum visibility day and night and add to the sporty and elegant look of the car.

During daytime driving, when the low/high beam is off, the DRLs are at maximum brightness. They dim automatically when the low/high beam is on, or when an indicator is activated.

The LED tail lights are also highly innovative, providing excellent visibility but also emphasising the style and safety features that are essential in a car of this class.

Adaptive Front Lighting SystemThe AFS can be integrated into the front lights as an option. Thanks to the automatic adjustment of the headlight beam, AFS provides an outstanding view of the road in all driving conditions, along with high levels of efficiency in terms of safety, without dazzling oncoming drivers. AFS features different beam modes for driving on motorways, country or city roads, and for adverse weather conditions*.

A motorway driving beam control system (enabled by a video camera mounted in the rear-view mirror housing) automatically maximises the depth of the beam without any need for manual high-beam activation.

The camera constantly monitors the road ahead to detect the lights of other cars. Sensors connected to the ECU register the driving style and speed and, if the road is clear, the beam is varied to offer the greatest depth and width of view, combined with the rotation of the headlights themselves.

The uniform, intense beam, combined with automatic adjustment of the headlight depth and width, ensures an outstanding view of the road in all conditions. The system completely prevents blinding oncoming traffic. The adaptive lighting system also allows for easy adjustment when driving on the other side of the road.

* Due to homologation rules in the USA and Canada, the AFS features the automatic depth and rotation control functions, but not the Motorway, Town and Adverse Weather Light modes.

Colours and Wheels In line with Maserati’s traditions, there is a wide array of personalisation options when it comes to options, colours and materials for the Levante.

Of the thirteen colours available, three are exclusive to the SUV model. In the range of ten light alloy wheels in six different designs, ranging in size from 18-21”, there are two new 20” wheel designs for the MY18 car. The Levante 350 hp and 275 hp diesel are equipped with 18” tyres as standard, with the same size front and rear - 255/60 ZR18. The top Levante S version features 19” wheels as standard, with wider, 295/45 ZR19 tyres at the rear and 265/50 ZR19 at the front. All wheels are available with optional All Season tyres.

The black-by-default calipers on the baseline Levante are painted black on the GranLusso and red on the GranSport trims. A wide range of colours with the Maserati logo is available as an option.

With the introduction of the GranLusso and GranSport trims, the interior of the Levante can be adapted to emphasise either luxury or sportiness, the two essential elements in the DNA of every Maserati.

In line with a long Maserati tradition, the customer has a wide range of customisation options. A total of 26 interior colour combinations are available. The cabin can be further enhanced with the optional dual-colour leather, contrast stitching on the seats and headrests and soft Alcantara® fabric for the cabin roof lining.

The dashboard and the central console are designed to accommodate the 8.4” Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC+) display, the driving modes button cluster, the aluminium rotary knob and the air suspension height setup switch.

The instrument panel is backlit with white light that contrasts beautifully with the warm cabin lighting. In the centre of the dashboard is a classic Maserati analogue clock with black background dial, white backlighting, aluminium interior finish and chrome surround.

The Levante is near the top of its class in terms of interior space. The rear seats comfortably accommodate three passengers and provide extremely generous headroom, with the two outer seats also offering maximum comfort and lateral restraint.

The luggage compartment has a versatile load space of 580 litres, which is ideal for large items. There is a 12V power socket in the luggage area plus three more sockets in the cabin.

The standard power tailgate – activated by buttons on the tailgate, key fob or dome light panel – opens and closes automatically without any physical requirement to lift or lower it. The system’s special anti-pitching function immediately stops the closing procedure when an obstacle is detected.

Climate control with Air Quality SensorThe standard dual-zone climate control system provides outstanding on-board comfort thanks to the temperature sensors and the high volume of air it delivers via 13 ventilation ports. The temperature adjustment function can be controlled via MTC+, as well as via a physical control panel under the screen.

All Levante variants are equipped with an Air Quality Sensor as standard. This feature combines an intelligent sensor and a signal analysis system that calculates external pollution levels and prevents polluted air and toxic gases from entering the car’s cabin.

A humidity sensor detects humidity levels in the cabin and increases the airflow from the ports accordingly. As an option, the Levante can be equipped with a four-zone climate control system, with two more controls in the rear part of the central tunnel.

An additional cabin heater is available on the Levante diesel and is designed to accelerate cabin heating in cold conditions.

Soft Close DoorsSoft Close Doors are an extra comfort feature that is available as an option in the MY18 Levante range and standard fit on the Levante GranLusso model in specific markets.

A mechanism quietly and automatically closes each of the four doors when they are left slightly ajar, doing away with the need for slamming. This increases the car’s safety and comfort, particularly for children in the back seat.

Soft Close Doors are also activated whenever the door is manually closed, ensuring that it is properly shut.

Maserati SoundtrackIn the best Maserati tradition, the petrol engine’s exhaust system is controlled by pneumatic valves to maintain the rich aural signature of the brand. In the default driving mode, the bypass valves are closed for a comfortable and discreet engine sound.

In Sport mode, the exhaust valves open, providing the shortest possible exit route for the exhaust gases. This gives the Levante its maximum engine performance and the unique Maserati engine sound. Beneath the rear bumper, the exhaust gases emerge through two double tailpipes in polished steel.

Levante S - 430 hp 3.0-litre V6 Twin TurboWith 321 kw (430 hp) of power at 5,750 rpm and 580 Nm of torque in Sport mode between 1,750 and 5,000 rpm, Levante S delivers a powerful driving experience. In Normal driving mode, the torque rises to 500 Nm in the lower rev range, reaching the 580 Nm maximum at 5,000 rpm.

The V6 engine features advanced valve control technology with hydraulic roller finger followers and four cam phasers, twin turbocharging and direct injection technology.

The V6 engine’s specific torque of 194 Nm per litre is the best in the luxury SUV class, as is its specific power (144hp/l). The Levante S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 264 km/h. Its 430 hp engine is in line with its competitors in terms of fuel consumption, with 10.9 l/100 km on the NEDC test cycle, and CO2 emissions (253 g/km).

Levante: 350 hp 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engineThe 3.0-litre 350 hp engine has been designed to offer an outstanding driving experience along with low fuel consumption. It delivers 500 Nm torque from 1,750 rpm up to 5,000 rpm. Equipped with this V6 engine, the Levante reaches 0-100 km/h in just 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 251 km/h. Its combined

consumption is 10.7 l/100 km on the NEDC test cycle, with 249 g/km of CO2 emissions.

Levante Diesel: 3.0-litre V6 turbodieselThe 3.0-litre V6 is manufactured by VM Motori. It develops 202 kw (275 hp) of power and a crushing 600 Nm of torque, 90% of which available below 2,000 rpm. The Levante diesel accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds and reaches 230 km/h even though it emits just 189 g/km of CO2 emissions and has a consumption of 7.2 l/100 km on the NEDC test cycle.

The engine uses a common-rail direct injection system with reduced dwell-time injectors. The maximum injection pressure of the common-rail system is 2000 bar and the system (which features Injection Rate Shaping (IRS) technology) is able to perform up to eight injections in a single cycle. The IRS creates a continuous injection profile that improves performance and reduces emissions, assisted by a sophisticated Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system.

Other significant features are a ball-bearing variable-geometry turbocharger with variable nozzles and a fabricated exhaust manifold with Air Gap technology. Rotating the turbo shaft on ceramic ball bearings reduces friction by 50% and, as a result, turbo lag, and improves boost and torque.

The reduction in emissions is significant, with 8% fewer nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 9% fewer hydrocarbons (HC) in the NEDC cycle. Low friction turbo has more benefits, such as better cold-start behaviour, quicker boost time, significant torque improvements and reduced fuel consumption.

The use of steel instead of cast iron, plus the inclusion of Air Gap, means that the engine can reach higher temperatures, improving the air-flow speed to the turbo for even better performance.

The Auto Start-Stop system on the diesel version reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 6%. Auto Start-Stop is automatically disabled in both the Sport and ESC Off modes.

Maserati Active SoundA thrilling engine sound is essential for every Maserati, and the Levante Diesel is no exception thanks to the Maserati Active Sound system. Two sound actuators, fitted near the exhaust tailpipes, accentuate the engine’s most attractive tones and adjust them depending on the way the car is being driven.

When the driver presses the Sport button, the sound becomes more resonant and remarkably inspirational for a diesel. Just the soundtrack you would expect from a Maserati.

Road in both automatic and manual mode, and the I.C.E. (Increased Control & Efficiency) mode that was originally introduced in the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans.

By default, the car is set to Auto Normal mode. This offers the right balance between ride comfort, reduced consumption and sportiness, performing smooth gear changes at low engine speeds.

The selectable Auto Sport mode enhances the powertrain’s sportiness with faster gear changes in higher revs. The sportiest mode is Manual Sport, which allows the driver to stay in the selected gear even when the engine reaches the rev limiter.

In Off-Road mode – which is exclusively available in the Levante – when the driver selects a chosen speed the car continues at this pace, even when climbing. This is extremely useful when the driver has to concentrate on a challenging climb; the car will effectively drive itself, with the driver only having to manage the steering wheel.

With Auto Off-Road mode selected, the transmission recognises the different types of terrain, interacts with the ESP and alters its shifting response accordingly.

In I.C.E. mode, gearshifts are almost unnoticeable, providing unrivalled driving comfort.

Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel-DriveThe Maserati Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive comes as standard in all versions of the Levante. It is based on an electronically-controlled multi-plate wet clutch, installed into a transfer case that is linked by a driveshaft to the front axle.

The system is developed to deliver a typical Maserati rear-wheel drive experience, even in low-grip road conditions. It acts on demand by transferring traction to the front wheels with an immediate response.

In normal driving conditions, the Q4 provides 100% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. On slippery or loose road surfaces, or in the event of loss of traction at the rear, for extreme acceleration or very hard cornering, the system reacts instantaneously, transferring the necessary torque to the front wheels. In a matter of 150 milliseconds, it can alter the front/rear torque split from 0:100% to 50:50%.

With its variable torque control, the Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system is always active and responds immediately to any variation in the driving conditions. Whilst the activity of the system is imperceptible to the driver, it can be monitored in real time from the 7” colour information cluster display.

A sophisticated algorithm developed by the Maserati engineers monitors an extensive range of dynamic vehicle parameters in real time: wheel speed, steering and yaw angle, power output, speed, and braking action, as well as wheel grip and driving style.

By processing all this data, the system can determine a dedicated grip profile for each wheel, creating optimal vehicle dynamic management for any road condition, at any time. The objective is to ensure driving pleasure and absolute safety at the same time.

Limited-Slip Differential (LSD)The Levante is the only car in its class equipped with a mechanical LSD at the rear axle. Fitted as standard, it guarantees optimal traction in all driving situations. The asymmetric locking feature offers 25% lock-up under power and 35% under release.

The rear differential is driven via a two-piece, 80 mm-diameter lightweight steel prop shaft with two constant velocity joints and one head rubber coupling, running through a cross-member mounted rubber bearing for NVH reduction.

Torque vectoringThe torque-vectoring function has been further developed for the Levante to increase the SUV’s sportiness and driving pleasure. Whilst performing a cornering manoeuvre, the system distributes more torque to the outer wheels by applying a slight braking force to the inner wheels.

This function is used to improve torque distribution and to help enthusiastic drivers. In conjunction with the LSD and Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, the torque-vectoring function considerably enhances the car’s sporty character. The Maserati Levante is as suited to day-to-day driving as it is to the Nürburgring racetrack.

values are prominent in the MY18 Levante, which adds off-road ability to on-road character.

The objective of the Levante was to deliver unrivalled performance in its class, Maserati-grade on-road handling and surprisingly competitive off-road capabilities. This objective has been achieved.

Lightweight body with low centre of gravityThe Levante’s chassis was modelled on the excellent foundation of the Ghibli sedan. It has outstanding levels of rigidity and its centre of gravity is the lowest in its class.

Modifications to suit SUV requirements have kept the weight under control and provided perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. A genuine SUV, the Levante has been built like a classic Maserati sports car, with close attention paid to every performance-enhancing detail.

The development of the body involved the extensive use of lightweight materials, not only to reduce the car's weight, as one would expect, but also to ensure maximum occupant safety.

The front part of the chassis is an aluminium casting with a reinforcing cross strut for outstanding rigidity in all directions. The rear section is in rolled steel, a heavier material that ensures optimised strength and weight distribution. The doors, the bonnet and the luggage compartment are made of lightweight aluminium. The car also features a dashboard strut in magnesium.

GT suspension layoutThe Levante’s suspension performs like that of a sporty grand tourer, providing a class-leading driving experience. Light aluminium alloy has been used for the suspension frame, the wishbones, the hub strut, the suspension towers and the crossbeam reinforcement. A new moulding technology ensures

greater rigidity without weight increase.

The suspension geometry is derived from the Ghibli layout but with specific revisions: increased stroke for off-road driving, higher spring rates to cope with heavy duty needs, and increased control of camber and toe variation to respond to the ride height variations that are possible with the Air Spring system.

In keeping with the race-bred tradition of Maserati, the Levante features double-wishbone suspension at the front, incorporating the latest technology for optimum control and precise handling. The suspension towers are integrated into the body structure of the car. The quadrilateral architecture guarantees precise and direct steering.

Multi-link five-arm suspension is featured at the rear to provide exceptional comfort and performance. To reduce weight, all arms are in aluminium: four are forged and one is cast.

Both front and rear suspensions adopt a roll bar for less body roll. The front bar is hollow for further weight saving. To achieve maximum structural stiffness, a cross-beam reinforcement has been introduced, linking the rear part of the suspension frame and the lower body structure.

Air Spring suspensionThe Levante is equipped with a state-of-the-art Air Spring suspension as standard. The system is a closed air supply concept, comprising four independent air springs, each with a level sensor, two reservoirs mounted on a rear suspension cradle, a compressor with valve block and the ECU that is integrated with the Skyhook damper management.

Apart from the obvious benefits, such as the improvement of comfort and active safety, the air suspension contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, thanks to the lowering of the car and the reduced aerodynamic drag at medium to high speeds.

Stability and car control are also improved thanks to the lower centre of gravity and the reduced load transfer, while maximum speed is increased. The pneumatic system provides six different height levels (including Normal and Park) with the ECU automatically managing the air pressure and air mass inside every spring in order to control the levelling. It produces optimum performance at specific speeds, according to the selected driving mode.

The driver can alter the ride height via a rocker switch or by choosing different driving modes on the central console. The height variation from the lowest position to the highest is 75 mm – up to 85 mm with the Park level included.

Auto entry/exitWhen the car stops, the suspension lowers by 45 mm, 10 mm

lower than the Aero 2 mode, to assist the passengers’ entry and exit. The suspension returns to Normal at 24 km/h.

The suspension height varies in relation to speed in order to guarantee the highest levels of safety and drivability. Thanks to intelligent mapping, the suspension lowers automatically at

higher speeds and accepts high ride (off-road modes) only under determined speeds.

Sport Skyhook system The Levante is equipped with aluminium, electronically controlled dampers. The ECU monitors a wide range of parameters, including the vehicle’s dynamics, body and wheel movements, shock absorber settings as well as the suspension height level, thanks to additional sensors integrated in the air springs. Depending on the selected driving mode, the system adjusts the damping rate separately for each wheel to satisfy the current load and handling conditions.

The Skyhook suspension is one of the standout features of the Levante. When the car is switched on, the shock absorbers are set to give priority to comfort. By pressing the Sport button twice on the gearshift lever bezel, the setting changes and the shock absorbers get stiffer, significantly changing the car's handling. The Sport setting, developed on the racetrack and in extreme conditions, is characterised by reduced load transfer (longitudinally and laterally) and gives the car a sportier character.

All-road capabilityThe driving modes are designed to simplify and make the Levante driving experience more exciting. There are three driving mode buttons – I.C.E., Sport and Off-Road – in the selector next to the gear knob. The car starts in Normal mode by default. Sport and Off-Road enhance the dual character of the Levante, transforming it from a sporty, dynamic GT to a capable and comfortable off-road seeker at the push of a button.

The driver can completely de-activate the Maserati Stability Program (MSP) and separately set up the height level of the car using the Air Suspension selector just below the hazard warning button. Torque distribution is the same in every driving mode: 0/100% front/rear which can vary up to 50/50% in just 150

milliseconds.

Normal modeThe default mode provides a standard setup to the pedal response, the turbo boost and the exhaust. The driver can choose between two different suspension levels: Normal, which provides 207 mm minimum ground clearance, or Aero 1 (-20 mm). This suspension set-up is the best compromise between sporty and comfort damping.

Sport modeThe Sport mode highlights the car’s more dynamic character: the throttle pedal is more responsive, the engine mapping provides maximum over-boost throughout the range and the exhaust system opens completely, emanating a loud and deep guttural sound.

In Sport mode the driver can keep the default suspension level or lower it to Aero 1. The MSP has a specific Sport set-up that allows the driver to exploit thoroughly the car’s on-road potential. Torque vectoring is active in this mode.

When the driver pushes the Sport button twice, the selected mode not only calibrates the engine and transmission, but also increases the suspension stiffness and switches the suspension height level to Aero 1 (-20 mm). On the screen, the air suspension image turns green along with other components. The driver can modify the height of the car from Aero 1 to Normal while maintaining Sport mode and Sport suspension damping.

Off-Road modeThe Off-Road suspension mode can be selected using the appropriate button or from the rocker control. In this case, the ride height increases by 25 mm (Off-Road 1), the Skyhook system response changes and, thanks to the ESP control, it can detect specific situations.

The driver can raise the car by a further 15 mm (Off-Road 2), some 40 mm higher than in the default mode. The resulting ground clearance reaches the outstanding figure of 247 mm.

I.C.E. modeThe Increased Control & Efficiency mode is designed for improved fuel economy, relaxed driving and low-grip conditions. The transmission is set to automatic only and provides softer gear changes. The Air Spring suspension setting is the same as in Normal mode. The throttle pedal mapping is set to Comfort mode, and all engine parameters contribute to decreasing CO2 emissions and minimising fuel consumption. No over-boost is available and the exhaust bypass is closed up to 5000 rpm.

Brembo brakesThe 430 hp Levante S features a state-of-the-art braking system that deals superbly with the car’s high performance. The front system has adopted Brembo 6-piston aluminium monobloc calipers working on 380 mm drilled discs. Aluminium 42 mm floating calipers with 330 mm x 22 mm ventilated drilled discs are fitted at the rear.

The Levante 350 hp petrol and 275 hp diesel are equipped with 2-piston 48 mm floating calipers working on 345 mm x 32 mm ventilated discs at the front. The rear brakes are the same with the 430 hp version but without drilled discs.

New Electric Power Steering (EPS)Newly introduced in the Levante MY18, as well as in the new Ghibli and the Quattroporte MY18, EPS improves the car’s handling and comfort while better supporting the driving modes and enabling the new Advanced Driving Assistance Systems that are optionally available in the Levante range.

Compared to hydraulic power steering, EPS is lighter, simpler, lower-maintenance and easier to fine-tune – without affecting engine power. Electric Power Steering retains the razor-sharp

handling typical of every Maserati while offering improved filtering of road irregularities and peace of mind while parking or carrying out low-speed manoeuvres. With an electronically-controlled electric actuator on the rack and pinion steering, EPS has better overall response and its functionality can be tuned accurately to exceed any requirement.

Advanced Driving Assistance Systems Active functions complement existing ADAS Highway Assist Lane Keeping Assist Active Blind Spot Assist Traffic Sign Recognition

The new, active ADAS introduced in the MY18 Levante allow Maserati to offer Level 2 autonomous driving technology, rare in the high-end SUV segment. The new ADAS package is optionally available on all Levante versions.

Level 2 ADAS, like Highway Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition, marks a major step toward semi-autonomous driving.

Although ADAS are valuable assets for ensuring a safer driving experience, Maserati also remains faithful to its core philosophy as a manufacturer of race-bred grand touring cars with superior dynamics capable of offering unparalleled driving experiences.

This principle fully applies to the Levante, a high-end SUV that

puts the driver first and a genuine driving machine that is not intended to be a self-driving vehicle. The introduction of the active ADAS package in the Levante range makes the car even safer in a variety of traffic conditions, but the driver remains 100% in control at all times.

Highway Assist Highway Assist is intended for use on highways or limited access freeways at speeds up to 145 km/h with the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) activated.

It reduces driver fatigue and consequently enhances active safety by allowing the car to keep itself centred in its lane and to adapt its speed – pre-selected by the driver from the ACC - in full autonomy.

The system employs the same hardware used by Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist - a radar unit on the front grille and a forward-looking camera in the interior rear-view mirror - and works with the EPS to control the direction of the car.

The radar uses the same algorithms as ACC and Forward Collision Warning Plus (FCW Plus), as well as lateral and longitudinal control and object recognition algorithms, which determine the car’s direction in the event that lane markings are invisible.

The multi-function camera detects horizontal road markings and calculates the distance and speed of the vehicle in front. Highway Assist includes a radio that provides road information, and a ‘hands on wheel’ detection system.

Highway Assist is a ‘hands-on’ function meaning that the driver is required to stay engaged in driving and in control of the car at all times. The driver can override the system at any time.

Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)LKA keeps the car centred in its lane. In comparison to Lane Departure Warning system, it features new graphics on the

instrument panel and radio settings, and replaces the acoustic chime signal with direct input to the EPS. The instrument panel display shows the specific status. White lines on either side of the vehicle image indicate that it is safely in lane.

One yellow line indicates that the Levante is moving off-centre, right or left. And one flashing yellow line warns of lane departure. At that point, when the Visual & Haptic box is selected in the touchscreen display, LKA actively steps in with corrective steering torque.

If the driver begins changing lane involuntarily, LKA will communicate with EPS to issue warning vibrations and ultimately alter the steering wheel angle to keep the car in lane. When the indicators are on, LKA is deactivated.

LKA uses a forward-looking camera that detects lane markers to determine the car’s position, as well as a radar for data processing, which is fundamental in defining the system’s logic and EPS interaction. The system works at speeds between 60 km/h and 180 km/h.

Active Blind Spot AssistActive Blind Spot Assist is a system that attempts to prevent a collision during lane change, an active upgrade of the previous Blind Spot Alert system. It monitors blind spot areas using two radar-based sensors located inside the rear bumper.

As well as providing an LED and acoustic warning, the system can communicate with the EPS to intervene with steering torque and prevent a possible collision. Active Blind Spot Assist uses a radar in the front grille and a forward-looking camera to determine the car’s position in the lane. It works at speeds between 60 km/h and 180 km/h.

Essentially, Traffic Sign Recognition prevents unintended speeding, providing the driver with real time information on the instrument panel about the current speed limit. When the system is activated, the forward-looking camera in the interior rear-view mirror begins to identify speed limits and other road signs, such as ‘no overtaking’.* Traffic Sign Recognition identifies speed limits for specific conditions, such as rain, fog or hour-specific limits, and uses map data from the navigation system to inform the driver in case actual signs are non-existent, invisible or not recognisable by the camera system.

Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionThe Levante is equipped with a cruise control system as standard. The optional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with integrated Stop & Go function further increases comfort and safety when driving on main roads and motorways.

When activated (between 30 and 210 km/h), ACC constantly monitors the space between the Levante and the vehicle ahead, maintaining a safe pre-set distance. If traffic slows or another vehicle moves in front, it slows the car down by making it coast or by engaging the brakes.

Conversely, when the vehicle ahead speeds up or moves into another lane, the system accelerates up to the pre-set speed. If the ACC is automatically braking, the stoplights are activated.

Thanks to the integrated Stop & Go function, the car will adjust to the target vehicle’s speed until it comes to a complete stop and will set off automatically if the stop is less than two seconds.

FCW Plus monitors vehicles ahead by means of a camera and warns the driver through visual and acoustic alerts when they are in danger of a possible rear-end collision.

If the driver brakes and the system determines that they have not applied sufficient brake force, ABA will compensate for this and provide the appropriate amount of additional braking.

Hill HolderThe Hill Holder system uses the on-board sensors to detect the vehicle's angle when parked facing uphill and keeps the braking pressure for a few seconds so that the driver has enough time to release the brake pedal and accelerate before the car rolls backwards.

Hill Descent Control (HDC)HDC allows a smooth and controlled hill descent on snow or rough terrain without the driver needing to touch the brake pedal.

When activated via the dedicated button on the steering wheel, the vehicle will descend using ABS to control each wheel's speed. If the vehicle accelerates with no intervention from the driver, the system will automatically apply the brakes to slow down to the desired speed that can be set up using the Cruise Control buttons.

By applying pressure to the accelerator or the brake pedal the driver can instantly override the HDC system.

Rear View and Surround View CameraThe rear parking camera is located above the number plate. It turns on automatically when the reverse gear is selected and shows the area behind the car on the high resolution head unit display.

The Surround View Camera system uses four cameras in total and provides a clear 360° view around the car on a top-down image in the 8.4” screen. It is activated automatically in reverse gear or manually by pressing the soft button on the MTC+ display.

Park AssistPark Assist provides visual and acoustic indications of the distance between the rear or front bumper and a detected obstacle when reversing or moving forward. The screen in the instrument cluster display provides visual warnings and an increasingly frequent sound according to the distance from the object.

Four sensors in the rear bumper monitor the area behind the vehicle up to approximately 2 metres, and six sensors in the front bumper monitor the area in front of the vehicle up to 1.2 metres.

Active and Passive Safety Maserati Stability Program Passive Safety Systems

Maserati Stability ProgramThe Maserati Stability Program (MSP) is an advanced active safety and driver assistance system that was further developed for the dual (on-road and off-road) character of the Levante. Thanks to a series of sensors, it detects any unusual handling behaviour and acts upon the brakes and engine to restore control of the car. The MSP is connected to the Hill Holder function and integrates the following subsystems:

• ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) • Anti Slip Regulation (ASR)• Engine brake torque control (MSR) to prevent wheel lock in

downshifts• Brake Assist System (BAS) to increase brake pressure in panic

braking• Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) - brake force booster in panic

braking

The Levante is equipped with the new Bosch ABS-ESP9, a state-of-the-art system that integrates the following advanced functions:

Torque vectoring in Sport mode Off-Road mode with three settings: gravel roads/deep snow/wet

grass Rollover Mitigation to reduce roll-over risks thanks to built-in

lateral acceleration algorithms Hydraulic Brake Compensation to increase the hydraulic

pressure in case of possible failure or loss of efficiency Trailer Sway Mitigation (TSM) to recognise the presence of a

trailer and prevent or reduce wobble or fishtailing Hill Start Assist (HSA)

Hill Descent Control (HDC)

Passive Safety SystemsSpecial attention has been paid to the Levante’s passive safety without compromising its weight and torsional rigidity. The front of the occupant compartment (the pillars and under-door mouldings) features hot-moulded steel components, with a magnesium dashboard strut, while the rear is stiffened with high strength steel. The bars at the front and rear end are in extruded aluminium, while the doors and the bonnet are in stamped aluminium.

A third load path has been added at the front of the front suspension frame, improving the crash forces distribution on the car’s structure and ensuring the stability of the body in frontal impacts.

Last but not least, the reinforcements on the rear longitudinal beams comply with US rear impact standard FMVSS 301 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards).

Six airbagsThe Levante comes equipped with six airbags. Two front airbags, both dual-stage, plus two side airbags located in the front seats for torsos and hips protect driver and front passenger.

Two side curtain airbags fitted in the roof lining next to the central pillar cushion the heads of front and rear passengers.

Seat belts and restraint systemsThe front seats are equipped with anti-whiplash safety equipment to reduce trauma to the occupants’ upper vertebrae. In the event of an impact from behind, the reactive headrests automatically move in closer to reduce the distance between their surface and each passenger's head.

The front three-point seat belts are equipped with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners and load limiters. In the event of a collision, these restrain passengers securely and help prevent injury.

Unprecedented testing on five continentsThe Levante has been subjected to a long and rigorous programme of reliability tests. The testing programme included environments where no other Maserati had ever been before. 34 pre-production prototypes were driven in an exhaustive testing programme covering millions of kilometres. Extreme hot climate tests were carried out in South Africa and in the deserts of UAE (United Arab Emirates) and Morocco, where daytime temperatures soared to 48-50°C.

Extreme cold-climate tests were executed in Sweden and in New Zealand, while specific quality checks were carried out in China and in Dubai. High mileage reliability tests were carried out in the USA and in Russia. In such regional testing cycles, the cars were put to the test by local drivers.

Each component of the Maserati Levante was tested for endurance and its ability to satisfy the high standards of the luxury SUV segment. Then, every single car coming off the production line is test driven on the road for a total of 50 kilometres, following the standardised Maserati procedure.

Before it is delivered to the customer, the car undergoes an additional 30-minute quality test, which includes the BIW unit, paint unit and assembly units, as well as electrics checks, dynamometer bench testing, and a water test.
