The team was come out and observed that the most HHs are surrounding by water and communities are vulnerable to lifesaving services indicated as following: Lack of shelter & NFIs, un-functioning health facility, lack access to safe drinking water, deterioration of health status and hygiene’s, difficult access to the food and market and poor protection services.

Introduction

Mission Objectives:

· To assess the flood impacts/effects, capacities, and immediate emergency needs of affected communities.

· To assess current situation and level of services including NFIES, education, FSL, WASH, Health nutrition and protection for affected population during the emergency period.

· To advocate for enhancing communities’ resilience during and post-emergency.

Methodology

· The assessment team used participatory approaches in data collection which based on the simple designed format for assessing and verification of damaged HHs and infrastructures.

· Focus group discussion used for open end questions to collect the reliable information of approximately 5 community members.

· COVID-19 prevention measures were considered by all assessment team members including observance of distance, putting on face masks, use of sanitizers.

Findings and recommendations per sectors:

Education:

Findings

· There is one learning space (primary school) in the village. (No damage to the classrooms or the offices). The primary school enrolment is 350 pupils 60% are females and 40% are males.

· the school been occupied by affected people.

· There are 6 latrines in the school.

Recommendations:

· No urgent intervention needed for education.

· Make a bridge around the school.

WASH

Findings

· The source of water supply is non-existent, as the people use rainwater, which is unfit for human use. There were 5 wells (EIAD) (before flood) now all of them have been destroyed. SMoH distributed chlorine to purify water.

· Shortage of water storage containers and the fact that the jerry cans found are too small for water storage, depriving many families of the ability to save water.

· Almost half of people have household latrines, now all people defecated in open space.

· No soap available after the flood.

· Lack of awareness of health promotion.

Recommendations

· Distribute the chlorine periodically and explain the methods of use.

· construct temporary trench latrines.

· Providing jerry cans for every household.

· awareness-raising and home visits by hygiene promoters on personal hygiene and other WASH concerns.

· Providing soap for every household.

Health:

Findings

· tracking the health situation of the affected area and checked up the situation and availability of medicines.

· Investigating the safety of potable water through taking sample to be analysed and distributing 2 Carton of chlorine, sensitizing the community about the ways of use.

· Conducting house to house visit to raise the awareness about diarrheal diseases, washing hands with water and soap

· Poster distribution

· Awareness session about how safely disposal of human waste and the purity of drinking water and prevention of diarrheal diseases.

· Decontamination OF 23 latrines. 7 latrines are totally damaged.

Recommendations: 

· Recruit additional health care workers to provide reproductive, nutritional & health education sessions 

·  Support joint supervision to monitor Health & WASH activities   

NFI/ES:

Findings

· 144 HHs are totally damaged and in real need for shelters and NFIs.

· At least 15 HHs got displaced / relocated into the only school in the community.

· Only 4 HHs are still dwelling in the school.

Recommendations;

· To avoid duplication in distribution process of NFIs for HHs.

· Urgent provision of NFIs mainly (Mosquito nets, plastic sheets, kitchen sets, blankets, sleeping mats).

Rendered services:

· Distribution of 144 tokens for the totally damaged HHs.

· Distribution of 2 Cartons of chlorine.

· Distributed of NFIs (8 Soaps, 1 jerry can, 1 plastic bucket, cotton wool and ( 1Mosquito net for pregnant women only ) for 140 HHs in Tamakanat and 110 HHs in Baghdad.(Islamic Relief)

Protection:

Findings

· The assessed village has no police station, however, for disputes/cases that need such services people usually go to Kosti town, fourteen Kilometres faraway.

· Community leaders and committees usually are the main actors for resolving disputes and conflicts at their level.

· Persons with disability are around 10 persons including two children.

· Women & Girls confronted with discriminations and/or violations such as: forced child marriage and FGM. 

· There is lack of Community Child Protection network, women groups, elderly support groups, People with disabilities Community mechanism as well as Community Based Protection Committee. 

· No safe play corners for children.

Recommendations:

· Establishment of child clubs and recreation activities for children

· Establishment of Child Protection Community Based Network, youth and women groups.

· Train communities in disaster risk reduction and establish protection committees.

·  Provision of dignity kits.

·  Selection of safe play place/corner with play materials.

·  Raising awareness among the community on child marriage and FGM.

FOOD SECURITY AND LIVLIHOOD

Findings

· The number of the affected families as estimated by the village leaders about 314 HHs

· Number of the complete destruction estimated by 144 houses.

· Crops destruction estimated by 50%

·

Baghdad village:

· The village is completely inaccessible and it submerged by water from all sides, the team didn’t manage to get in even by foot.

Recommendations:

· Food assistant and nutrition should be provided urgently to Tamakanat and Baghdad

Gaps:

1. Food and Nutrition

2. NFIs (Mosquito nets, plastic sheets, kitchen sets, blankets, sleeping mats, soaps, jerrycans)

3. Health (Victor Control, water treatment and Essential drugs)

Challenges:

· Inaccessibility for effected villages.

General Recommendations:

· Because of inaccessibility to effected villages, interagency forum agreed the agencies have response urgently depend on information which is provided by the flood’s response task force team

· Interagency assessment mission should be announced at least before 48 hours, in order to make proper preparation and arrangement.

· Sector lead coordinators should be part of any upcoming assessment.
