“Chilpancingo, towards Pantitlan, switch lines, at Centro Medicio, towards Universidad, make sure to tke the Viveros exit, ta da!” I thought in my head as I began a trek to check out Mr. Schell’s (Una Tarde Dominical Bajo la Ciudad de Mexico) at the Viveros exit. It was amazing to me that all this time I had been counting out the museums in Mexico one by one, to fins I had not seen Mr. Schell’s display yet! Almost there, almost there….Viveros! Looking around the long walkway leading to the stairs, panic. Slowly, climbing, but nothing, hmmm, art for art’s sake, right? However, where was art today? Reaching the top of the escalator, turn around, Repentino! Looking upon Mr. Schell’s art took my breath away - it filled the whole space and provided the contrast to the busting groups of people on their way to destinations and origins, unaware of the scene that remained above them. Coming down the escalator, I found myself riding the escalator back up taking in images of a Sunday on the metro the hidden cross of one of the passengers, something causing a frozen stare across the aisle, the young, the old, the tired, the excited, it was all there on this single metro car. If you looked closely enough, you saw images and translations of a ride on the metro in every window. S sense of peace settled over me as for at least 10 minutes, this bustling exit was turned into a artist’s room viewing. I began to realize that art just
