A mood is less specific than an emotion or feeling, less intense and less likely to be triggered by a particular action or event. Moods can be described as being either positive or negative.

6(a) Get ready to read2. Who is the letter to and who is it from? The letter is to S’bo and from Ntsoake.

6(b) Read a letter2. Find the following features in the letter: (a) the names of three people - Mr Kutu, S’bo and Ntsoake (b) the date – 2 0 July 2013(c) the greetings - Hi …, Stay well … (d) The introductory sentence - I hope you’re looking forward to the long weekend too! (e) The ending sentence - Please give my love to your mother.

3. Write answers to the following: (a) What is the main idea of the letter?

The main idea of the letter is the successful concert (b) What is the writer “looking forward to”

The writer is looking forward to the long weekend. What does this mean? This means either a Friday or Monday will be a holiday, making the weekend three days long, instead of only two.

A Personal letterReader, pp. 78 – 79

1. Who is the letter from? The letter is from Donovan;

2. What is the main idea of the letter? The main idea is to tell Ashleigh about the scuba hop and to thank her for teaching him to dance;

3. Where is Ashleigh? What is she doing there? Ashleigh is in East London dancing in a show;

4. What information can we tell about East London? East London is by the sea

5. What does the drawing show ?Donovan performing at the concert, everyone clapping wildly

6. How would you describe Ashleigh and Donovan’s relationship? Give reasons for your answers .Learners describe Ashleigh and Donovan’s relationship (close, really like each other, cousins who are also friends etc.). They use examples from the letter to back up their opinions (best cousin ever, Donovan xxx);

7. Donavan sent a copy of the show review to Ashleigh. Read it and write a summary of the show using a mind map. Prompt learners to identify a central topic and suitable branches for their mind maps (what, where, when, who).

Learners use the letter to help them say how Andile feels. For example: Andile feels a bit overcome by how big Cape Town is and how many people there are.

5. Imagine if Andile sent Lele a text message instead of a letter. It could only be 160 characters (letters or symbols). What do you think he would write?Learners work out a text message that Andile sends to Lele. Remind them of how to use numbers and letters in SMS “code”. Do they know the signing off greeting “lol”? It means “lots of love”. Informal assessment: Informally assess learners’ ability to make comparisons.
