Good Morning Year 5!

Welcome to this week’s home learning. We are continuing with Macbeth but moving on to area in Maths.

In our school bubbles we are starting a History project! The children in school will be learning about World War 1 and World War 2 and we want to share this learning with you at home! These tasks are for you to do whenever you can and everything will be on our wordpress blog for you to dip in to! We are reading War Horse by Michael Murpurgo, watching Goodnight Mister Tom (ask your parents if you can watch this at home) and learning about the changes and the impact 2 world wars had on Great Britain.

Check out our shared Year 5 & 6 youtube page and wordpress blog for videos!

Keep working hard- it will pay off!

Miss Harris and Miss Ridgers

Gem challenge

Today’s gem focus is using your grit power. Learning new ways to do things is hard – we get it! Use your grit power to practise because that’s how we learn and get better. We know that you can do it and give it a good go.

Task 1

We are going to begin by continuing with the story. Read up to page 44 of Macbeth.

The pages are at the bottom of this document.

What do you think happened to poor old Banquo?

Do you think he is alive, hurt, missing or even dead?

Write down what you think has happened.

Now watch the animation- today I would like you to watch 2 chapters today.

Were your thoughts right? Tick the predictions and thoughts that were accurate!

Now complete task 2.

SPAG task

This task should take 30 minutes.

Using dialogue with purpose

Speech is used in stories to show the dialogue between two characters, as well as, giving the reader more information about what is happening or what may happen next. It is very easy to use speech in every sentence you write but this should be avoided!

“Hi, my name is Amy” she said.

“Hi, my name is Bob” he said.

“That’s a cool name!” Amy exclaimed.

As you can see, the story isn't really going anywhere and does not move the story along like it should. Here is a better example:

There was a funny looking girl walking over to me, “Hi my name is Amy!” she explained. I thought I recognised her from school, but she had never spoken to me before. I replied, “Hi, my name is Bob” but I felt nervous whilst doing so.

“That’s a cool name!” she said excitedly. I began to feel a lot better about our conversation and I hope she becomes a new friend.

This example creates movement, explains the situation and creates more context to their conversation. A little bit goes a long way when it comes to speech! Speech should include these four things:

Your task is to use the example here and colour code it using the four criteria listed above – you can copy and use colouring pencils or highlighters to do this. After, continue the story for 2-3 sentences and use dialogue where it is needed to create more information for the reader.

Maths task

The task should take around 30 minutes.

Year 5 objective: to find the missing lengths when the area is given

To work out the area of a square or rectangle, multiply its height by its width. Area = (length x width ) or A= (l x w)

If the height and width are in cm, the area is shown in cm2

If the height and width are in m, the area is shown in m2 5cm

This square has an area of 25cm2 as the length is 5cm and the width is also 5cm (5 x 5=25)

What if we are given the area and one length of the shape, but not the other? What do we need to do then? Look at these shapes. What is the missing length?

1. 2.

Area = L x W. So to find the missing sides of these shapes we need to use the inverse.

20 = 5 x ? or 20 ÷ 5 = ? 56 = 7 x ? or 56 ÷ 7 = ?

4cm

Area = 264m2

Area = 60cm2

6cm

4.

Length?

3. Length ?

This is a rectangle. Write down what the different legnths and widths could be.

5.

Area = 120mm2

For example:

12mm x 10mm

Write down 4-7 more possibilites.

Deepening Challenges:
