Masters Report 2019

Last season was not without its challenges, Steve Barrow and Charlie Tanner leaving, the point to point being cancelled and hounds coughing at the end. The presence of saboteurs and their social media have kept us all on our toes, however I am proud to say that with the support of the hunt staff, field, foot followers and farmers we managed to still have a good season with some decent sport had in the vale, and the heath. The vale produced some fun sport and with the addition of some new hedges to open up the country, we have seen increasing field numbers on these days. Which I hope will continue into this upcoming season.A huge thank you to Felicity Green for her support to both Callie and I during our first season. We welcome Louly Thornycroft into the Mastership, who is already proving to be predictably invaluable in her new role.

Hunt Ball 2019

The Hunt Ball dawned once again on 16th March 2019, this year with a Circus theme. The ball commenced with a fire thrower on entry, who persevered despite the pouring rain.Guests were then greeted by our amazing acrobat / stilt walker who provided a lot of good photo opportunities. The dream team of Becky Green providing Catering and David Britton with his wonderful team and marquee helped us to create 'The Greatest Show.' A competitive game of Heads and Tails led into the re-introduction of a short auction this year. James Boughey did a great job as auctioneer and helped us to raise more than £4,000 from just four lots. Guests then partied the night away until the early hours accompanied by the band 'Funkty Dumpty.'  Specials thanks must go to James Boughey for once again being so accommodating by providing his house as our venue. Thanks also, to all of our kind sponsors; Sportarm, McClarrons, Humphries Kirk, Langham Wine, Jurassic Coast Farm Shop & Purbeck Cider. Also, thanks to all the helpers and those who donated auction lots. We were extremely pleased that the ball raised in excess of £20,000! This year will be the last year for Hannah Sealey and I on the Committee and we wish all the best of luck to the committee going forward, for what is becoming one of the best events in the Dorset Social Calendar! Lily Hiscock

One Day Event 2018

We are lucky to be able to join up with the RAC Saddle Club to run our ODE. It works well for us and I hope it works for the Saddle Club as well! It is always very popular and we ran a full day with cross country running from 10 till 6.

As you can imagine it involves a lot of people (over a hundred) doing various jobs through out the day. We try to supply all the man power that we are asked for and in return Steph Buchanan and Sue Cobb provide a fabulous course of British Eventing standard, a show jumping course and dressage arenas and of course their expertise in organising!

I would like to thank every one who helped us on the day especially Louly Thornycroft for organising the fence judges, Mellissa Frampton for her lovely tea tent and for persuading the sponsors to part with their money, Clare Tredrea for running the dressage on the day and Sue Cobb and Steph Buchanan for their continuous help.

Point to Point 2019

Well, what can I say?!

The meeting scheduled on the 3rd February would have been a cracker thanks to the increased sponsorship, large amount of entries and the most beautifully prepared course. Sadly, the weather was not on our side and snow arrived and didn’t leave in time. Troops rallied in true South Dorset fashion and we re-arranged for the following Saturday. Nothing could have prepared us for the news that hit on the Thursday morning – the outbreak of equine flu and that all racing in the UK had been abandoned for the weekend. This was obviously devastating for the hunt and for the many people who put so much work and effort into making this day happen.

I was truly amazed how much support we were given by our sponsors and many of them donated their money towards the costs anyway. These special thanks go to Symonds & Sampson, Preston Redman, Southern Counties Auctioneers, Greenslade Taylor Hunt, McClarrons Insurance, Humphries Kirk, Volvo Cars - Poole, Malcolm Barnes Haylage, Sue Frost and David & Sophie Bernstein. Other sponsors rolled their money over to next year which is also very generous.

I also thank the many people who put hours of their own time into preparing the course. We should all be very proud of what Graham Tory and his team have done over the years to make Milborne St Andew one of the best point to point courses in the South. Special thanks also go to Frank Ross who prepares the fences beautifully, year after year.

We managed to run our hunt race at the Wilton meeting on March 23 rd and John and Irene Mayo kindly sponsored this for which we are hugely grateful.

Puppy Show 2019

The Puppy Show was held on Wednesday 10th July 2019 at the Kennels.Mrs Felicity Green MFH and Mrs Callie Coles organised a delicious lunch for the Judges Andrew Osborne MFH and Adrian Danger at Huntsman’s house and the weather was glorious. Not too hot, but sunny and warm and a great difference from last year’s bitterly cold April day.

The new team in the Kennels, Ryan Walpole Johnsen and Hugh Wheildon, ably assisted by our “last man standing” Kevin Best had the whole place looking immaculate. The new blue paint was much commented on, as was the new fencing so kindly sponsored by a great South Dorset supporter, to whom we are extremely grateful. Six couple of dog hounds and five and a half couple of bitches came before the judges Andrew Osborne Esq MFH and Adrian Danger Esq., The Judges commented on how well the puppies showed themselves and congratulated the new team on their progress.

Tea in the barn followed and I am hugely grateful to the ladies of the Hunt who organised and provided such a delicious feast for everyone to enjoy.

This was our first showing of the South Dorset Young entry and I hope for many more to come.

South Dorset Hunt Hedge laying Competition 27th January 2019

The favourable January weather continued when the South Dorset Hunt held their annual Hedge Laying competition on Sunday 27th January 2019. This year we were invited to Highlands, Piddletrenthide by kind permission of Mr James Boughey. After drawing lots, the competitors had five hours to lay their plots. Open competitors have ten metres of hedge to lay and novices are given seven metres. The hedge supplied consisted mainly of blackthorn and is held down by natural bonds and crooks. Competitors travelled from Dorset and Somerset to brave the exposed position with tremendous views towards the coast. The Contest was organised by Mr Ivan Croad and his assistant Andrew Johnston. Our judges were Mr Michael Hole and Mr Jerry Simpson.

The results were as follows

Novice 1st Stafford Cox2nd Graham Adams

Open1st Rob Wood2nd Andrew Burrough3rd Steve Eldridge

Once again we were generously sponsored by Mr Mark Woodhouse of Hall &Woodhouse Ltd. Each competitor received a case of Badger beer for their effort.

South Dorset Hunt Patrons

Last summer we only had one function which was again a very enjoyable Party at The Edge, the amazing home of the Elliots, on Portland. We were very grateful to have a second visit as some had not been able to make it the first time.As always I reiterate the need for new members. If we could get another 10 it would mean another £1000 for the hunt. There are people out there who have had a life time of fun and interest with the hunt, but will still not JOIN. Rates are very reasonable £1000 for life member                                              £150 for a couple                                              £100 singleMany members still ride hunting, and are generous enough to support The Patrons as well. I do hope we get a flood of new members!!

South Dorset Hunt Branch of the Pony Club

The South Dorset Hunt Pony Club is thriving, bucking the trend of a National decline, with our Membership numbers staying very much the same. Our Members range from four years old right up to early twenties. Our success can be attributed to the energy of a fabulous, hard-working and dedicated Committee who put together a jam packed programme of rallies and training throughout the year.A number of our Members have been competing not just Regionally but also Nationally with Annie Doyle qualifying for the Badminton Grassroots Competition and Lily Ryder representing the South West at the British Eventing Under 18 Championships which were held recently at Frickley Park. Not only did the South West Teams win both the Intermediate and Open Championships but Lily also placed 6th individually, a huge achievement. We don’t just cater for the older Members and always hold a Mini Show for Pony Club at the beginning of June at North West Farm, Winterborne Kingston. This is a wonderful event and it is lovely to see some of the children who have never competed before gain in confidence as the day progresses. We will also be holding a Mini Combined Training this year for our younger members. Our Pony Club Camps, which are held at Bovington Equestrian Centre, have been extremely well attended and this year our Senior Camp Members were lucky enough to benefit from Instruction by Five Star Event Rider, Jo Rimmer and Internationally acclaimed Show Jumping Instructor, Targa Hammond, as well as receiving talks from local vet Pete Aitkin at Dorset Equine, Abby Bunyard Farrier and Tiggy Townsend from Townsend Therapy. We have quite a few members who enjoy following the South Dorset Hunt and this season we were lucky enough to have two Pony Club Meets, the first was at the Kennels during October half term and the second at Bovington in February. The Pony Club meets provide our members with a wonderful introduction to hunting and it’s always lovely to see the children out following the hounds. So to sum up the South Dorset Hunt Pony Club is busy, happy and successful. We are always happy to welcome new Members, more information can be obtained via our website www.branches.pcuk.org/southdorset or contact one of our joint DCs Janet Lickiss [email protected] or Claire Ferguson [email protected] for further information.Claire Ferguson and Janet LickissJoint DCs

BLAKE LIVE at DEWLISHor

A SERIES OF FORTUNATE EVENTS

When I came up with the idea of holding a fundraising concert, I knew precisely nothing about staging a live musical event. It was to be a very long and steep learning curve, punctuated by moments of extreme good fortune. While telling John Sunnucks about the many hours I was wasting pursuing pretty mediocre tribute bands, he told me that not only was one of his godsons, Ollie Baines, lead singer with Blake, but that he was staying with him that very weekend. Two hours later I had booked Blake. When I sent out the ‘Keep the Date’ flyers, Giles Foster Mitchell rang to ask if there was space for his daughter Camilla to join in. When I booked Phil the piano tuner, he asked if there was a place for the brass quintet he and four chums had recently put together. When Mark Coreth so kindly donated a bronze to the auction, he asked if there was space for his burlesque and aerial artist daughter Anna. You don’t get much luckier than that! The day arrived, as did everyone I had booked (by now up to twenty three people directly involved with the music, let alone everything else - seventeen musicians, stage crew, lighting and sound technicians, artist’s managers…. ). The sun shone, the music was simply fabulous, and the sight of nearly 400 people and friends picnicing on the lawns lifted the organizer’s heart. In fact it lifted it so much that, having sworn that I would never do it again only days before, I have already started making the bookings for 2021!There are too many people to thank individually here, but I must thank Caroline Boyden for letting us use beautiful Dewlish House as the venue, Charlie Church, Mark Coreth, Frances Oliver and Alice Plunkett for so generously donating auction prizes, and James Boughey for auctioning them with such panache.I also particularly want to thank Sophie Caruth, David Bernstein, Katy Davis, Sarah Wilkinson and Eilean Appleton who were my morale and practical supporters throughout.
