Kindergarten Pretend and Learn Lesson Unit: Weather Pretend and Learn Theme: News and/or Weather Station Implementing the Pretend and Learn Lesson in the Kindergarten Classroom Create a weather station and model how to use it. Show students how reporters/meteorologists predict and report the weather. Utilizing self-made instruments, hands-on experiments, and plenty of literacy, the weather station inspires the young meteorologists. Invite a local meteorologist or show clips of local newscaster reporting the news and the weather. Content Area Science/LA/Math/Writing Vocabulary English and Spanish vocabulary cards are located below Materials Weather pictures: tornadoes, rain, snow, clouds, etc. Science weather tools such as thermometers, barometer, sun clocks, etc. Camera, microphones, pretend computers, maps, dress up clothes (ties, suits), etc. Connections Literature: The Cloud Book by Tomie de Paola; What is Today’s Weather by Jennifer Boothroyd; What Will the Weather Be Like Today? By Paul Rogers; Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett; The Snowy Day by Ezra Keats; Weather Forecasting by Mark Breen and Kathleen Friestad; Weather Words and What the Mean by Gail Gibbons Writing: Students predict and write about the weather or news of the day, write about their favorite type of weather, interview a classmate, cause and effect foldable Technology: Ss record daily weather, check Weather Channel daily and record the temperature and create graphs, Ss video record each other reporting the news/weather using IPods or IPads, Pictures Austin ISD Kindergarten 2015
