Supporting the Child Cancer Foundation

Ryu, Kimberly, Te Paea and Jock are this year’s Child Cancer Foundation National Ambassadors, chosen to represent

the children throughout the country that the Foundation supports.

March is Child Cancer Appeal Month. The month aims to raise awareness about the vital support the Child Cancer Foundation offers children with cancer and their families across the country, and funds to support this work.

Volunteers will be out in force on Friday, 20 and Saturday, 21 March collecting for the Child Cancer Foundation’s Street Appeal.

More than three New Zealand children are diagnosed with cancer each week. Child Cancer Foundation Chief Executive Robyn Kiddle says the Foundation aims to reduce the impact of cancer by offering services that ensure children and their families are supported, informed and well cared for at every stage of their cancer journey.

“At any one time we are assisting around 650 families across the country. Our team connects with families upon diagnosis and continues to offer support in hospital, at home and in the community,” she says.

“No two families’ cancer journeys are the same. We work to build resilience in families and assist them in a practical way through the many logistical, financial, emotional and social challenges they may experience.”

Every child undergoing cancer treatment receives Beads of Courage® from the Child Cancer Foundation in recognition of the treatments and procedures they’ve undergone during their battle with cancer and the milestones they’ve achieved. Some children have 300 + beads and ‘look forward’ to collecting them. It is a great distraction that helps take their mind of the troubles at hand.

The Foundation receives no direct funding from the government, so it relies on the generosity of New Zealanders to support its work.

The Child Cancer Foundation helps kids with cancer and their families – you can help by donating during the Street Appeal, texting “BEAD” to 206 to make an instant $3 donation or visiting www.childcancer.org.nz to make a donation of your choice.

Lucy Shelton was very thorough, professional and approachable. She communicated with us frequently

and gave us detailed feedback. She had a good handle of the current market and gave real thought to the advertising strategy. She worked very hard for our property and gave a lot of her time. We couldn’t

have asked for a better experience… She came highly recommended to us and now I know why. I would

absolutely recommend her and can say she will make an absolute difference in the selling of your property.

This is my summer ‘go to’ salad, light, nutritious and

refreshing. With the garden brimming with beans, pumpkins and courgettes this is a great way to use your own garden produce. In this salad I also add a bit of feta which makes this great, easy recipe even more delicious!

Ingredients1 red and 1 yellow pepper, halved and deseeded

½ butternut squash

2 courgettes, thickly sliced, and/or 1 cup green bean chopped and steamed

4 garlic cloves, leave skin on

3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

1 red onion, thickly sliced

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tbsp harissa paste

50g whole blanched almonds

250g couscous

300ml hot vegetable stock

Salad dressingzest and juice 1 lemon

20g pack mint, roughly

chopped

Optional extras in addition:

2 tsp tomatoe puree

½ tsp chili powder

1 tsp lightly toasted ground cumin

Heat oven to 200C/180C fan. Cut peppers and squash into bite-size pieces (leave skin on the squash). Tip all the veg into a baking tray, add garlic, 2 tbsp oil and seasoning, then mix and roast for 20 minutes. Add onion, cumin, harissa and almonds. Roast for another 20 minutes, then cool.

Put couscous into a large bowl, pour over the stock, cover, set aside for 10 minutes, then fluff up with a fork.

In a bowl, mix zest, juice and remaining oil. Squeeze garlic pulp from skins into the bowl, mash well and fold in the mint. Pour over the veg, then toss with the couscous.

Enjoy

Taking a break from the usual focus on new housing

developments in Auckland’s outskirts, investors are excited about the boom in apartment construction in the Super City’s CBD. According to the Transport.co.nz blog, 2,462 apartments and terraces are currently under construction, and about the same number again are being sold or marketed. Apartment consent numbers in 2014 reached 2000 for the first time since the mid-2000s.

Investors will be spoilt for choice with high rise blocks proposed for the inner city and a lifestyle mixed residential development due to start construction as part of the Wynyard Quarter waterfront development. The biggest is likely to be the NDG Auckland Centre for which a $350 million 52-level 209m skyscraper is proposed on the empty site bordering Albert St/Victoria St/Elliot St. Transport blog says

there are also two or three apartment towers planned along Albert Street.

Meanwhile, the Wynyard Quarter development is generating excitement as the Super City’s go-to place to live, work and play, says Auckland apartment specialist and Quinovic Viaduct principal David Graham. Early bird residential property investors, eyeing plans for up to 600 apartments to be built over

the next few years, can be found among the throngs of weekend visitors enjoying the waterfront area’s restaurants, cafes and leisure opportunities. It is also becoming a highly desirable workplace location with more than 1000 office workers housed at ASB Bank’s striking 21,000sq m headquarters, designed to echo Auckland’s volcanic landscape. It is part of 48,000 square metres of new office space planned for the area by council controlled organisation Waterfront Auckland.

Another project is Fonterra’s headquarters, now under construction, which will bring a further 1000 workers and businesses located on the fringe, and include Air New Zealand, Vodafone and Microsoft, with many others expected to follow.

Further developments include a new $200 million waterfront hotel, to be known as the Park Hyatt Auckland, and will be located on the current Team New Zealand site on Halsey St, looking out on the Viaduct Harbour and Te Wero Bridge.

This world class urban transformation project involves the redevelopment over 25 years of 36 hectares of land between the Harbour

Bridge and the Viaduct Basin, says David. Stage one has been completed with the North Wharf, Gantry walkway for views of Silo Park, a playscape with pools, sculpture, tram rides, basketball hoops and more. Visitors can stroll from the stunning super yachts to the playgrounds, parks, cafes, restaurants, seafood markets and more. Year round events and activities are planned. More than 10,000 visitors flock to the area most weekends and it has become a favourite with Aucklanders and tourists alike.

If you would like to have a chat, or a coffee to discuss what’s happening with rentals in the central city I would be happy to help.

If you received a letter

in the post, or a call from Inland Revenue advising you that your business was going to be audited, you would certainly want to know why. Our clients often say to us, “We file all our tax returns on time and make tax payments when required. We are doing everything correctly! Why does Inland Revenue want to audit us?”Often, there are obvious reasons why businesses get audited i.e. they are getting a large GST refund and The Inland Revenue wants to verify that it is correct, or a voluntary disclosure has been made and Inland Revenue wants to verify this. Some of our clients have been audited because they have received media attention or were in a particular industry that Inland Revenue were focusing on. But generally, Inland Revenue will not give you any reason for why they are auditing you. They

will just send you a notification of what they intend to audit, and will request the relevant information from you. They may also request an interview and visit your business premises. They can do an audit and you may never find out why they audited you.

They do however provide the following reasons in their booklet “What is an Audit” as to why you could have been chosen for an audit:

• To analyse your business accounts or tax returns

• To check someone else’s records (such as your employer or bank that pays interest) and match them to your records

• Information was received in another audit which suggests your records should be checked

• Your compliance record (whether you have kept to the tax laws in the past)

• Your payment record (weather you have paid your taxes on time in the past)

• Selecting a particular industry

• Examining a particular issue or problem that affects a group of taxpayers

• Where you live, or how your run your business

• Local knowledge, perhaps arising from media reports or unexplained wealth

• Information we get from other people about you

• We may choose you randomly.

From our experience with Inland Revenue audits, any of the above situations can apply.

So as you can see, there is no particular reason why you, or your business would be audited. Anyone could be audited by Inland Revenue at any time. It is not a matter of if you will be audited, it is more of a matter of when!

It is important to get professional advice when you have been notificed of an audit. The team at Withers Tsang & Co Limited know that any type of audit can be stressful, so we are here to assist you with dealing with Inland Revenue. As an added extra to Withers Tsang & Co clients, we offer Audit Insurance, which covers the cost of an Inland Revenue audit. This insurance must been taken up prior to any notification of any audit to cover the costs of the audit. If you have any questions please contact us at Withers Tsang.

The best thing I ever did was give Daryll a call and ask him to have a look at my property. I was very impressed with the results! He is a very

committed and dedicated professional. Daryll was always available for my questions and clarifications. He provided the facts, offered his

opinions but allowed me the space to make my own decisions. He assumed responsibility for the property from the start, managing all

service providers and tradesmen willingly. I would highly recommend him to family and friends who require real estate services. It would be hard to see how his level of service could be improved upon. Thanks

Daryll for your time, effort and professionalism.
