Locust situation

LOCUST SITUATION: During the 1st fortnight of October, 2019, Ist to Vth instar hoppers, immature adults, breeding swarm/ adult group and scattered mature adults were observed in the Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Suratgarh districts of Rajasthan. Out of 1098 nos. of survey spots, control operations were undertaken at 1034 localities covering 44900 ha area.

WEATHER AND ECOLOGY: Rainfall estimates (01-10 October, 2019) shows light to moderate rainfall in the SDA. Greenness estimates Ist decade of October indicate 2-3

decade old vegetation in SDA and Survey teams also observed green vegetation. Soil moisture observed mostly wet in Jaisalmer, Barmer and dry at Bikaner and Phalodi areas.

LOCUST CONTROL OPERATION : During the Ist fortnight of October, 2019, a sum of

44900 ha area was treated against Ist to Vth instar hoppers, immature adults and

small/medium breeding swarm /adult groups. Total 2,36,684 ha areas has been treated

upto the 15th October, 2019.

FORECAST : Control operations are underway in the Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner,

Jodhpur and Suratgarh districts against the Ist to Vth instar hoppers & immature adults

as well as mature breeding transient / gregarious swarms / adults group, hence it is

likely that more hopper groups may be reported near the areas where breeding was

seen.

PREPAREDNESS : India is prepared with sufficient trained man-power, vehicles, P.P. equipments, pesticides activated eLocust3 units for locust surveys/population monitoring and control operation.

Animal Husbandry advisory (Source: Pashupalak calendar (OCTOBER), the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and

Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India)

o There is a change in the weather from this month onwards, hence, due

arrangements should be made to protect the animals from the onset of the

winter.

o If sheep have not yet been sheared, this activity must be carried out

during this month.

o The affected areas of animals afflicted with FMD should be cleaned with

a 1% solution of Potassium Permanganate.

o If the animals have not yet been vaccinated against FMD, Haemorrhagic

Septicaemia, Black Quarter, Enterotoxemia etc., this must be done during

this month.

o Deworming must be carried out during this month. Dewormers and antiparasitical

solutions must be changed over a period of time to counter

build-up of resistance.

o Due care should be taken to store/procure fodder for periods of shortage

that may occur during the winter months in certain areas.

o Essential salts must be mixed with feed and given to the animals.

o Despite the fact that green fodder is abundantly available, ensure that the

fodder given to animals is mixed with larger quantities of dry fodder at

this time. This is due to the fact that an increase in consumption of green

fodder can lead to occurrence of green diarrhoea and a problem of

Acidosis (increased acidity in the blood).

o Sowing of improved varieties of Berseem (B.L.10, B.L.22, Vardan,

J.H.B.146, B.L. 42) must be done in this month.

o 21 days after the sheep have been sheared, their bodies should be

drenched with disinfectants to protect them against ecto-parasites.
