Interview (Tornado)

When it is very very windy outside, sometimes you can see very

dangerous storm. It is called Tornado.

Can you say that with me?

Tornado. (Encourage children to say)

Tornadoes are ferocious and dangerous storms.

They whirl and spin like a top. (gesture)

Tornadoes have the power to destroy anything that gets in their

way.

You do not see it very often, but Elmo wants to interview Tornado

today. Let’s watch.

What did you see in Elmo’s World?

(Encourage children to say “Tornado”)

We can actually make tornado.

We can not make it outside, but we can make it inside, here in our

room. It is called “experiment”.

First, let’s look at the process making the Tornado Maker.

(Distribute the activity sheet to each child and explain the process

by pointing at the pictures.)

PROCESS:

1. Fill one of the bottles two-thirds full of water.

2. Use duct tape to fasten the two containers. Make sure to tape

tightly to make sure that no water will leak out when you turn

the bottle over.

3. Turn the tornado maker, so that the bottle with the water is

on top.

4. Swirl the bottle in a circular motion.

■Most tornadoes form counter-clockwise in the Northern

Hemisphere. A tornado will form in the top bottle as the water

rushes into the bottom bottle.

Now let’s make a tornado.

We will do an experiment.

We can take turns making it.

(Tape the other end of the string to the edge of the plate)

(Repeat this with all four squares, taping each square evenly

along the hanger.)
