Mayor Troy Rudder recently proclaimed Friday, April 6, as Arbor Day within the city of London. Citizens are encouraged to plant and care for trees to promote the well-being of future generations.
In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Ne-braska Board of Agriculture that a special day was to be set aside for the planting of trees, thus Arbor Day was born. It was fi rst observed with the plat-ing of more than a million trees in Nebraska and Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and world.
The planting of trees reduces erosion of topsoil by wind and water. In addition, it lowers home heating and cooling costs, moderates temperature, cleanses the air, produces oxygen and provides habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable re-source providing paper products, wood for homes, fuel for fi res and countless other wood products, according to the London Tree Board.
For London, trees exponentially and visually increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business landscapes and helps beautify the community.
