The 5th Avenue Theatre is one of the country’s leading musical theater companies. Our mission is to advance and preserve America’s great indigenous art form – The Musical. We are nationally renowned for our production and development of new musicals. Since 2001, The 5th has premiered 16 new works, nine of which have subsequently opened on Broadway. They include Disney’s Aladdin; First Date; A Christmas Story, The Musical; Scandalous; Shrek; Catch Me If You Can; The Wedding Singer; and Best Musical Tony Award-winners, Hairspray and Memphis.

We are equally acclaimed for our vibrant new productions of musicals from the “Golden Age of Broadway” and contemporary classics. These signature revivals enthrall fans of these enduring works and introduce these great shows to new generations of musical theater lovers.

The 5th is committed to achieving the highest standards of artistic excellence by employing world-class performers and creative artists, utilizing full live orchestras, and staging exceptional and imaginative productions. The 5th places a special emphasis on employing our amazing community of Puget Sound-based artists and technicians. Our celebrated educational programs serve more than 60,000 young people each year through a host of projects including our Adventure Musical Theater Touring Company, The 5th Avenue Awards, and the unique Rising Star Project. For adults, we offer free-to-the-public events such as the popular Spotlight Night series, and pre-performance Show Talks with Albert Evans. We are the largest arts employer in the Pacific Northwest with more than 800 actors, singers, dancers, musicians, creative artists, theatrical technicians, and arts professionals working for us each season.

As a non-profit theater company supported by the community, we enjoy the patronage of more than 25,000 season subscribers (one of the largest theater subscription bases in America). More than 300,000 audience members attend our performances each year.

OUR HISTORIC THEATER

A beautiful Seattle landmark, The 5th Avenue Theatre’s breathtaking design was inspired by ancient Imperial China’s most stunning architectural achievements, including the magnificent Forbidden City. Built in 1926 for vaudeville and silent pictures, The 5th Avenue Theatre reigned for decades as Seattle’s favorite movie palace. In 1979, 43 companies and community leaders formed the non-profit 5th Avenue Theatre Association. Their goal was to restore the theater to its original splendor. The 5th Avenue Theatre re-opened in 1980 as Seattle’s premier home for musical theater.

The 5th Avenue Theatre gratefully acknowledges our 43 original founders and sponsors. Please visit www.5thavenue.org for specific information on these important companies and individuals.

Celebrating the American Musical

David ArmstrongExecutive Producer and Artistic Director

One of the questions I am most frequently asked at The 5th Avenue Theatre is what our secret to picking the

perfect season is. I share with you here what I tell everyone. We choose a season that embodies our mission: to celebrate our great indigenous art form, The Musical – past, present, and future. With an array of shows ranging from a hotly-anticipated Broadway hit to a hilarious new world premiere, not to mention celebrated contemporary classics and one of the immortal musicals from the Golden Age of Broadway, we believe that our 2014/15 season truly represents the breadth and depth of what Musical Theater has to offer.

The season opens with one singular sensation, the multi-award-winning musical theater triumph, A Chorus Line. This is a musical for everyone who’s ever had a dream and put it all on the line. We’re thrilled to showcase Seattle’s most spectacularly talented dancers in a production that recreates the thrilling original staging by Michael Bennett.

Next is the Seattle debut of the current Broadway smash, Kinky Boots. Winner of six Tony Awards® including Best Musical, this inspirational story features a rocking, Tony-winning score by Cyndi Lauper, direction and Tony-winning choreography by Jerry Mitchell and a hilarious book by four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein. Kinky Boots is an exhilarating new Broadway musical that will lift your spirits to new high-heeled heights.

A Christmas Story, The Musical returns home for the holidays after two wildly successful seasons in New York. Called “a little Christmas miracle” by the Associated Press, the show garnered six Tony Award nominations. This all-local cast will dazzle holiday audiences, bringing to mind memories of your own Christmas stories.

Continuing our tradition of collaboration with the Seattle arts community, The 5th Avenue will kick off 2015 with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel in a co-production with Spectrum Dance Theater. Directed by 5th Avenue Producing Artistic Director Bill Berry and choreographed by Spectrum Artistic Director Donald Byrd, this fresh new staging of a beloved classic will be truly unforgettable. You will be swept away by cherished songs such as “If I Loved You,” “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Next up, The 5th Avenue will celebrate its fifth collaboration with ACT with the rarely-produced Off-Broadway classic, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well & Living in Paris. The poignant, passionate, and profound songs of famed songwriter Jacques Brel will be brought to vivid theatrical life in this intense musical experience starring some of Seattle’s most phenomenal singers.

In the spring, we will produce our 17th new musical with the world premiere of Something Rotten!. The Tony Award-winning director and choreographer of The Book of Mormon and Disney’s Aladdin, Casey Nicholaw returns to The 5th to helm this hilarious new show. The time is Renaissance England, where two brothers, Nick and Nigel Bottom, are desperate to write a hit play. But how can they when the competition is the biggest star of the era, everyone’s favorite bard: William Shakespeare? They seek out a soothsayer who gives our heroes a completely original idea from the future – and thus, the first ever musical is born. There is indeed Something Rotten! – and it will have audiences rolling in the aisles.

The 5th Avenue closes its season with the one that you want! Grease is rolling in to The 5th Avenue Theatre, complete with the T-Birds, the Pink Ladies, and of course, Greased Lightnin’. Audiences will be singing and dancing along to Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey’s memorable pop hits including “Beauty School Dropout,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and “You’re the One that I Want.”

You won’t want to miss a single production next season, and with affordable subscription options starting as low as $170 for all 7 shows, you don’t have to. We also offer 5-, 4-, and 3-show subscriptions so you can create your own perfect package and guarantee yourself a whole season of nights out at the theater. For more information, please visit www.5thavenue.org. (Be sure to check out our special subscription options, including deals for patrons 35 and under!)

I hope to see you here at The 5th!

BRIAN MAY, CBE, PhD, FRAS is a founding member of Queen, a world-renowned guitarist, songwriter, and performer; also a Doctor of Astrophysics, 3-D stereoscopic photography authority, patron to a number of charities and a passionate campaigner for animal welfare. Brian penned 22 of Queen’s top 20 hit singles including “We Will Rock You”, now a feature of almost every sporting event worldwide, and recently a star live feature of the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics. We Will Rock You also gave its name to the worldwide hit Queen musical now celebrating its 11th anniversary in London, and about to embark on its first US Tour; Brian and band-mate Roger Taylor are co-musical supervisors for the production. Following four decades of worldwide success with Queen and as a solo artist, most recently Brian has been writing and performing with Kerry Ellis, originator of the role of Meat in the London WWRY production. Brian’s interest in 3-D Photography sees the October publication of “Diableries -

Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell”, Brian’s fourth book. As an advocate for animal welfare, Brian is a leading inspiration in the ongoing fight against the proposed UK badger cull, and the return of blood sports. Brian can be contacted via his website www.brianmay.com.

ROGER TAYLOR Although best known for his powerhouse role in Queen, Roger Taylor is anything but a drummer confined to his kit. With rock ‘n’ roll in his veins all through his schooldays, he has always been a highly active, vocal member of Queen. Each of the band’s 15 studio albums included compositions by him including such eternal classics as I’m In Love With My Car and Sheer Heart Attack. He was also the first to make a solo album, 1981’s Fun in Space. To date he has released four solo albums, which, aside from his work with Queen, further highlighted Taylor as an musician and writer with a strong sense of identity, a wide musical perspective, and a defined political awareness, more often than not conveyed in characteristic irony. He is kept busy these days overseeing Queen’s worldwide hit musical We Will Rock You and as the creator and driving force behind the Queen Extravaganza, the hugely successful official Queen tribute band. The Extravaganza is undertaking its second tour of North America and then takes its unique show to the UK. For the immediate future Roger is to release new solo material with the album “Fun On Earth” as well as a retrospective box set, “The Lot”, possibly followed by a solo tour.

This past March, we wrapped up our third season of the Rising Star Project with a student production of Monty Python’s Spamalot. Proudly presented by the Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation, The 5th Avenue’s Rising Star Project offers students firsthand experience in how to produce, coordinate, develop, market and perform a musical for our historic stage. Students are mentored by 5th Avenue staff, directors, choreographers, musicians, and technical crew, and develop the skills used by theater professionals.

The performances of Spamalot were an astounding success. A cast of 23 young actors and an orchestra of 16 young musicians performed the score, sang the songs, learned the original Broadway choreography and nailed the humor of this uproariously funny musical. But while the performers were showcased in front of the curtain, a crew of 23 technical theater students learned how to run one of the most technically-challenging productions ever done at The 5th Avenue. For the student crew, this was their moment to shine.

For young performers there are often many opportunities to participate in productions at school and local community theaters, but for students interested in technical theater, the options for hands-on experience are few. The Rising Star Project provides students interested in technical theater professional-level training by The 5th Avenue technical staff. While schools may provide students opportunities to work on the stage crew, the equipment is often outdated and rudimentary. During the Rising Star Project, technical theater students learn to operate a state-of-the-art sound board and lighting console, they learn to run the follow spot and control automation, they work on some of the most technically-advanced equipment in the industry and they learn industry-standard

“I’M NO LONGER THAT ONE WEIRD KID, obsessively passionate about technical theater. I’m not alone. There exists a COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE MY AGE that don’t think it’s weird that I have EOS lighting software on my laptop, or that I use PAR cans and RGB LEDs, to [light] my bedroom.”- RSP Student Technical Crew

safety procedures. Students interested in costume, hair and makeup design learn to prep wigs and fit costumes, and rig them for quick changes. Perhaps most importantly, the students on the technical crew learn to work collaboratively as a team. As one student recently commented, “I’m no longer that one weird kid, obsessively passionate about technical theater. I’m not alone. There exists a community of people my age that don’t think it’s weird that I have EOS lighting software on my laptop, or that I use PAR cans and RGB LEDs, to [light] my bedroom.”

In Spring 2015, for the fourth season of Rising Star Project, students will collaborate on an all-student production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. Students will once again work alongside The 5th Avenue crew to learn the craft of technical theater. They will learn about creative process and will follow the journey of The 5th Avenue’s professional production from initial design to execution on The 5th Avenue stage. The professional crew will mentor the students, then step back and allow them to run the show. As a parent of a Rising Star Project student wrote, “Who turns over an entire theater to teenagers and then stands beside them to pass on this craft the only true way it can be passed - from mentor to student? The 5th Avenue Theatre does.”

Way back in the year 2000, I got the chance to write the book for a musical based around Queen’s greatest hits. Queen had a terrific sense of humor and also quite a futuristic vibe (Flash! Ah ah!). Also, a kind of legendary feel, so I came up with a comical Dystopian ‘legend’. Sword in the Stone meets The Matrix. Except the sword was a guitar.

The story imagined a world where technology is sufficiently advanced to allow the media entertainment machine to download the latest homogenised pop music, games and videos directly to every consumer on Earth at once. Thus creating a bleak and lonely world where the most significant relationship an individual has is with their personal computer.

For example, in the story, our two teen rebels are captured and the police plant tracking bugs in their heads. These days we’re all tracked; my wife can see where our three children are at all times by looking at ‘Find My Phone’. Most young people actually announce their whereabouts themselves on social networking. If the cops want to get someone they can just follow their tweets. Because of WWRY’s longevity, I get to play with these developments and work them into the script.

We even get to use different songs when it feels right. Queen’s hit catalogue is too vast to include them all, so for instance, “You’re My Best Friend” was not in the London show. There is, however, a scene where our two leads run away and discuss their loneliness and isolation. They realize that they are both friendless. These days, with the arrival of social networking, loneliness and isolation have taken on a very different form. It tends to be experienced not so much in the corners of cafes and schoolrooms but via headphones and a tiny screen. In 2013, it seemed ridiculous for two kids to discuss friendship without reference to Facebook. Young people now live in a world where it’s possible to have many virtual ‘friends’ and ‘likes’ and yet still be entirely isolated and alone. Factoring this into the story has added a whole new layer in which real friendship in real time is viewed with suspicion as almost deviant behaviour. The new dialogue with this very changed emphasis brought the song “You’re My Best Friend” into the show.

Likewise, the stunning outreach and ubiquity of Broadband which has occurred in the last decade has led me to introduce the rock anthem “Now I’m Here (Now I’m There)” into the evil Killer Queen’s repertoire.

Apart from addressing the broader social and technological changes, I also get the chance to update moments of topical humour. In the story, a group of rebels called Bohemians fashion themselves on half forgotten Rock Gods and so the script is peppered with references to rock and pop. Britney Spears for instance is the subject of a gag, but during the time of her very public emotional problems I took it out because what had been a fun and supportive joke suddenly felt dark and wrong. Happily, Britney’s back in the show but during her absence, Posh Spice, Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson all took a bow. Clay Aiken was a presence in the early days but Idols come and go; he’s moved on and so have we. When I was looking at the script for our upcoming US tour, I put in a reference to Hannah Montana. Since then, Miley Cyrus has twerked her way to ubiquity and so the gag had to change. Twerking is in the show now of course, but I think it will have a short shelf life.

In the long run, the show is a celebration of live music - something well worth celebrating in a world where the majority of ‘live’ music is a semi lip synched dance show taking place in a vast arena which the audience experiences through a sea of camera phones, including their own. Long live rock n’ roll.

The flamboyant British rock band Queen, fronted by the charismatic singer-songwriter Freddie Mercury, won international success in the seventies and eighties with a fusion of heavy metal, glam rock, and shameless camp theatrics. In a series of elaborately produced albums, including Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, and News of the World, they extended their range to include disco, hard rock, pop, speed metal, punk, funk, rockabilly, jazz, and psychedelic rock. Inspired by the White Album-era Beatles, they also reached into the pre-rock past for inspiration, adding country, ragtime, opera, gospel, blues, Dixieland, folk, music hall, and vaudeville to their bag of tricks.

The band was formed in 1971 by university and art school students. Their anything-and-everything approach was fully present the next year on their debut album, the self-titled Queen. Every subsequent album tried to top the last, climaxing in their magnum opus, A Night at the Opera, with its overwhelming centerpiece “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Co-produced by Roy Thomas Baker and the band, A Night at the Opera is an orgy of sonic experimentation: guitar layering, sound effects, tap dancing, tape delay, and multi-tracked vocals (over 180 vocal overdubs in “Bohemian Rhapsody” alone). Released in 1976, it was the most expensive rock album ever recorded, and one of the most successful.

Queen produced 15 studio albums, five concert albums, and several compilations. After Freddy Mercury’s death (in 1991) and bassist John Deacon’s retirement, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor performed together occasionally, and from 2004 to 2009 they collaborated with a new lead singer as Queen + Paul Rodgers. The band’s influence has been enormous and, like their music, incredibly diverse, inspiring artists from Kurt Cobain to Green Day to Guns N’ Roses to Radiohead and Lady Gaga.

Clearly events have rather overtaken what, at the time, still seemed a futuristic vision. The ‘wrist held’ communicators of our original design through which the kids downloaded their every influence are scarcely a futuristic idea now everyone has a smart phone. There was no American Idol in 2000, no YouTube and no social networking. For a story about the death of live rock through a Net empowered corporate media machine, these are not developments that are possible to ignore.

Back then, I called my brave new world Planet Mall, imagining Earth as one vast shopping precinct. A couple of years ago, I changed the name to the iPlanet. Nobody goes shopping in real time anymore.

And that’s the great and exciting privilege I have with We Will Rock You. Because it’s still being produced around the world, I get the chance to update the script.

20 5 T H A V E N U E M U S I C A L T H E A T R E C O M P A N Y

Also in development – a haunting new musical called BEAUTIFUL POISON, which brings all of the mystery and romance of New Orleans to life through a rock star’s eyes as he falls in love with an untouchable girl locked in a garden – she may be his salvation or his demise. Brendan Milburn and Valerie Vigoda, an acclaimed musical writing duo and members of the pop band GrooveLily, have teamed with TV and film writer Duane Poole to create this magnetically passionate show, based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “Rappaccini’s Daughter.” This is The 5th Avenue’s very first commission, and we are thrilled to bring the story to life from the ground up, with an unexpected score that explodes onto the stage with the sounds of pop and New Orleans jazz.

First up: PAINT YOUR WAGON. The 5th Avenue Theatre is working with the Lerner & Loewe Estate and Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright Jon Marans on a re-examination of this classic musical. The lives of pioneers from around the world rushing to strike gold in California continue to be the backbone of this story, but they are newly infused with a gritty realism. The beautiful Lerner & Loewe melodies remain at the heart of this great tale – freshened up with the sound of contemporary bluegrass music. All of this adds up to an enthralling new version of this beloved and complicated show.

Finally, we dive into COME FROM AWAY by David Hein and Irene Sankoff, a piece that brings the power of musical theater to a documentary-style drama. On September 11, 2001, a day when it felt as though humanity was lost,

generosity and compassion were prevalent in one small town as stranded foreigners from 30 grounded planes took refuge in Newfoundland. With Newfie pop and folk-rock influences, this musical weaves together individual stories into a rich fabric

of community. Come From Away is the story of how the heart can triumph in a crisis.

IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK TO BRING A NEW MUSICAL TO LIFE. As a part of our New Works program, we give the writers unfettered time to spend writing, we bring in actors to give life to the words, and (most importantly) we give them all enough room to find out what works and what doesn’t. It is our great privilege here at The 5th Avenue to support the development of new musicals. We believe that musical theater is one of America’s most important contributions to the arts, and that it is vital to perpetuate it as such.

THIS SUMMER, OUR NEW WORKS DEPARTMENT IS A HIVE OF ACTIVITY as we continue to develop three exciting new pieces of musical theater – and the range of material could not be more diverse! Over the next few months, our rehearsal studio will be home to writers developing incredible stories ranging from the California Gold Rush to a gothic fantasy set in contemporary New Orleans, not to mention some unknown-but-true events of 9/11 that took place in far-flung Newfoundland. These new projects are just a few of the incredible ideas and stories we are developing here at The 5th Avenue Theatre.

DAVID ARMSTRONG (Executive Producer and Artistic Director) Since his appointment in 2000, Armstrong has guided The 5th Avenue to a position as one of the nation’s leading musical theater companies, acclaimed for both its development and production of new works and its innovative stagings of classic musicals. As a director, he has created memorable 5th Avenue productions of A Room with a View, Oliver!, Candide, Hello, Dolly!, Sweeney Todd, White Christmas, Hair, Mame, A Little Night Music, The Secret Garden, Anything Goes, Company, The Rocky Horror

Show, Pippin, Vanities, Yankee Doodle Dandy!, and Saving Aimee, which made its Broadway debut as Scandalous under Armstrong’s direction in November 2012. Prior to The 5th, he spent nearly 20 years as a freelance director, choreographer, and librettist. His work has been seen in New York, Los Angeles and at many leading regional theaters including The Kennedy Center, Ordway Center, Ford’s Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse, and New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. From 1990 through 1995, he served as artistic director of Cohoes Music Hall in upstate NY. Armstrong has also written the books for the musicals The Wonder Years (winner of seven Drama-Logue Awards), Gold Rush, and Yankee Doodle Dandy!

BERNADINE (BERNIE) C. GRIFFIN (Managing Director) was appointed managing director in January 2010 and is responsible for the administrative, fundraising, information services and facility operations, as well as oversight of all activities related to the Board of Directors. Griffin first joined the Theatre in 2002 as director of theater advancement and development. During her tenure, The 5th Avenue has grown from a $10 million to a $25 million organization. She brings to her position 30 years of fundraising and arts management experience.

Prior to The 5th Avenue, she served as director of development for the prestigious Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, as well as for The Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, California. Before moving to California, she served at the Seattle Symphony where she is proud to have been part of the team that built Benaroya Hall. In addition to the Symphony, Griffin worked for the Tony Award-winning Seattle Repertory Theatre, as well as Tony Randall’s National Actors Theatre in New York. She began her career at the University of Denver. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington and is proud to have been born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington. She is a member of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre and a board member of Seattle Rotary #4. Most recently, she served as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts. Griffin was named one of the Puget Sound Business Journal’s 2013 Women of Influence. She is married to award-winning actor Seán G. Griffin.

BILL BERRY (Producing Artistic Director) served as The 5th Avenue’s associate producing artistic director and casting director from 2002 through 2009. During that time, he directed productions of West Side Story (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wonderful Town (Seattle Times Footlight Award), Wizard of Oz and Smokey Joe’s Café. He recently made his Broadway debut as the director of the hit musical First Date at the Longacre Theatre. Berry’s directing work has been seen at theaters across the country, most recently at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Play house where

he directed a critically acclaimed production of On the Town. Directing highlights include Cabaret performed at The 5th Avenue Theatre, St. Paul’s Ordway Center (Ivey Award), San Jose’s American Musical Theatre, and Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars, as well as the smash hits First Date and RENT at The 5th. From 2002 to 2009, he served as the producing director for The 5th Avenue’s education and outreach programs. During that time he significantly expanded the scope and impact of these initiatives, including spearheading the creation of Fridays at The 5th and The 5th Avenue Awards, honoring excellence in high school musical theater, as well as substantially increasing the reach of the Adventure Musical Theatre Touring Company throughout the Northwest. These programs combined now serve 60,000 students annually. He also initiated the Show Talk series, which seeks to deepen the theater-going experience. Prior to his work at The 5th Avenue Theatre, Berry was a freelance theater artist based in New York City.
