Covenant Questions and Promises

To the new members: Who is your Lord and Savior?

Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior.

Will you, as a believer in Jesus Christ and as a member of this church, act out your faith in the

world, in your work and in your family?

I will.

Do you covenant to be an active member of this church through your life in the world and

support of this church?

I do.

To the congregation: As a congregation, will you support these new members with your

encouragement and your prayers, as together we seek to call upon and praise God?

We will, God being our help. May God give us all grace to share ministry together that

Christ may be glorified in this place.

The Lord’s Prayer “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we

forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For

thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.”

“Great is Jehovah, the Lord, for heaven and earth testify to his great power.

‘Tis heard in the fierce raging storm, in the torrent’s loud thundering roar;

Great is Jehovah, the Lord. Mighty is his power.

‘Tis heard in the rustling of leaves in the forest,

Seen in the waving of golden fields, in loveliest flowers’ gaudy array.

‘Tis seen in the myriad stars of heaven.

Fierce it sounds in the thunder’s loud roll,

And flames in the lightning’s brightly quivering flash.

Yet clearer the throbbing heart of thee proclaims Jehovah’s power,

The Lord God almighty.

Look thou praying to heaven and hope for grace and for mercy.

Great is Jehovah, the Lord.”

*Doxology and Prayer of Dedication

“Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below;

Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost! Amen.”

*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his

only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered

under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he

rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, the

Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the

forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Church Bell is rung in loving memory of William Potts, Jr. (1915 – 1986), Doris Potts

(1915 – 1986), and Deborah Potts Quanaim (1944 – 2009). Prior to Sunday morning worship, the

bell from our original Sanctuary is rung in memory of those interred in our Memorial Garden.

Let us pause to give thanks for all who have gone before us, who rest in the peace of God,

thanking God for the Christian witness of their lives.

The flowers that beautify the Chancel this morning are given by Judy Hodge, in loving

memory of Betty and Mark Matthews, and Jim Hodge.

Notes About Today’s Music The offertory anthem, “The Omnipotence,” is a choral adaptation of one of Franz Schubert’s

songs. Originally written in German, “Die Allmacht” describes the eternal power of God. The

English translation in the choral setting is a bit trite, so Miss Lamp will perform parts of her solo

today in the original German. The piece weaves drama with Schubert’s unique gift of melody.

Our prelude was written by one of our “snow birds” who has sung in the choir for many

years. Scotty is a fine jazz pianist, in his arrangement of the standard setting of “The Lord’s

Prayer” he puts in a few what we call “Scotty chords.” I thought it was fitting to use his setting

on music appreciation Sunday.

Greeting You 9 a.m.: East Door – Walter Hartung. West Door – Ralph Eccles.

11 a.m.: East Door – Lawrence Betsill. West Door – Diane Betsill.

Our Condolences are extended to Marge Hockey, upon the death of her husband, Art Hockey, on April 10

th. A

memorial service was held in our Sanctuary on April 14th

.

Take Note We are only 1% shy from our $3.5 million Capital Campaign Goal; just $52,275 away,

having funds committed of $3,447,725 to the project. A big thank you to our members and

friends who have made a Capital Campaign commitment. If you have already pledged, please

consider increasing your pledge slightly, if you are able, to help us over the finish line. Capital

Campaign commitment cards are available in the pews. You may place these in the offering

plate, mail them to the church office or call Christine Davis in the financial office (276-6338,

ext. 16), and make a verbal commitment by phone. If your pledge was made on the basis of a 3

year payment plan, and you are able to accelerate the giving sooner, that will help lower our

interest expense for our temporary construction loan. Thank you for your help to get us over the

finish line.

The God Who Carries Us

READ: Isaiah 46:1 (Common English Bible)

“Bel crouches down; Nebo cowers. Their idols sit on animals, on beasts. The objects you once

carried about are now borne as burdens by the weary animals.”

REFLECT:

One of the most moving – an inspiring – moments in any athletic completion is that one where

an athlete stumbles and another competitor goes back to offer help. The tone of the moment is

transformed from a test of strength and speed to one of mutual humanity, sharing in one

another’s frailties. Such moments remind us of something nobler than defeating another in a

game of skill, strength, and speed. Competition may push each of us to realize our best potential

– and that is good. But more extraordinary are moments that reveal our common infirmities;

moments where we strengthen one another in the storms of life.

This is not so with God; it must not be so. Unfailing strength is the very nature of God. Yet, here

Isaiah fashions for us a sharp contrast between gods that are carried and a God that carries us or,

as Henry Sloane Coffin once observed, “Between religion as a load and religion as a lift.”i In

another of Isaiah’s tirades against idols, against imaginary gods, he provides the reader with

graphic clarity the gods of Babylon bobbing and swaying in an absurdly undignified fashion on

the backs of animals. Weary from the weight of these gods, the animals strain to move forward

as the frightened devotees lead the animals to a place of safety away from the invading armies.

What a picture; ordinary, mortal human beings struggling to secure the safety of gods! Isaiah

intends for this to strike us as absurd.

Isaiah then contrasts this ridiculous image with the living God, the God who bore Israel in his

arms from its birth and has carried it ever since. The prophet would have us understand that a

burdensome religion is a false religion; that a god which must be taken care of is not a faith that

can sustain us. Israel needs, as do we, a faith that takes care of us. Communion with the God of

Israel is a faith that always shifts the weight of life to God, not the other way around. And Isaiah

wants us to know that if we ever feel that we are carrying our religion, that if faith has become

burdensome, then our gaze has moved from the one, true living God.

The wonderful teacher of the Christian faith, Paul Tillich, once commented that we are not asked

to grasp the faith of the Old and New Testament but, rather, are called to be grasped by it. A

Christian’s beliefs are not a set of propositions which we are compelled to accept. That would be

a burdensome religion. The Christian faith is an invitation from a living God to come and be held

in God’s grasp, to be lifted and carried along through the difficulties of life we must all face. We

may struggle at times to free ourselves from God’s embrace, to go through life alone, in our own

strength. But sooner or later, we will become as weary as the animals carrying the idols of Bel

and Nebo. And when we are depleted, God will be there.

RESPOND:

1. How has this scripture or meditation spoken to you?

2. What insight can you apply to your life this week?

3. What one specific act do you intend to take, an attitude to change, a person to see, or

prayers to pray?

PRAY:

Almighty God, you created me for life with you. Strengthen me when I am weary, lift me when I
