SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 9, 2018

HOLY EUCHARIST

with HOLY BAPTISM 10:30 A.M.

WE WELCOME YOU!

We are delighted to worship with you, wherever you are on your spiritual journey.

Nursery care is unavailable today. Children are welcome in worship and at the altar.

Our liturgy is found in THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER (BCP). Hymns are found in THE HYMNAL 1982;

service music is in the front section of THE HYMNAL, where the number is preceded by an “S”.

Generally, we stand to sing, kneel to pray, and sit to listen; this leaflet will guide you through the worship experience.

THE FIRST LESSON Malachi 3:1-4 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight-- indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CANTICLE 16 (choir and congregation)

[Bless-ed be] the Lord, the God of / Israel; *

he has come to his people / and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty / savior, * born of the house of his / servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our / enemies, * from the hands of / all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our / fathers * and to remember his / holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father / Abraham, * to set us free from the / hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him / without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the / days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the / Most High, * for you will go before the Lord / to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of sal/vation * by the for/giveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion / of our God * the dawn from on high shall / break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the / shadow of death, * and to guide our feet in/to the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy / Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for / ever. Amen.

THE SECOND LESSON Philippians 1:3-11 I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that

the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL PROCESSION – HYMN 56 (Choir will sing a verse, then all sing refrain.) Veni, Veni, Emmanuel

Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!

THE GOSPEL Luke 3:1-6 The Holy Gospel ... Glory to you, Lord Christ.

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'"

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

People: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. Celebrant: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the

forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Celebrant: Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in

the prayers? People: I will, with God's help. Celebrant: Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the

Lord? People: I will, with God's help. Celebrant: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? People: I will, with God's help. Celebrant: Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? People: I will, with God's help. human being? People: I will, with God's help.

the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and forever. Amen.

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant: We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit

as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

THE BAPTISM Celebrant: Hayes, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Celebrant: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. People: Amen. The Priest places a hand on the person's head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying: Hayes, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own for ever. Amen. Celebrant: Let us welcome the newly baptized. All: We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim

his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. HYMN 65 Prepare the way, O Zion THE PEACE (Please stand.) The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. REFLECTION ON GIVING OFFERTORY PRAYER

THE HOLY COMMUNION MUSIC AT THE OFFERTORY Come Thou Redeemer of the Earth

Text by St. Ambrose of Milan (translated). Music by Richard Shephard

Come thou, redeemer of the earth, and manifest thy Virgin Birth, Let every age adoring, fall, such birth befits the God of all. Begotten of no human will, but of the Spirit, thou art still,

The Word of God in flesh arrayed, the promised fruit of God displayed. O equal to the Father, thou! Gird on thy fleshly mantle now,

The weakness of our mortal state in deathless might invigorate. Thy cradle here with glitter bright, and darkness breathe a newer light,

Where endless faith shall shine serene, and twilight never intervene.
