Thanks for Visiting Us
Thank you to all of the parents and family members who were able to attend the parent information sessions on Thursday afternoon last week. We understand that it can be a late evening for many families but it is important to us to spread the meeting out to allow parents to attend multiple classrooms if necessary. If you require any further meetings with teachers, appointments can be made through the office or speaking with classroom teachers to organise a time that everybody can be available.
P & C Annual General Meeting
We would love to see you at the AGM on Tuesday 21st February 2017 from 6.30pm – 7.30pm in the staffroom at school. You don’t have to be available to attend every meeting to become a member of the P&C and we have many families who contribute their time or skills in different ways throughout the year. The P&C is a great opportunity for you to continue to build our community school through assisting in activities that help our students grow and have fun.
Year 3 – 6 Sports Carnival
Don’t forget to put Friday 17th March 2017 aside in your diary to come along to the Year 3 – 6 sports carnival which will be held on the school oval. A program will be sent home closer to the event to ensure that you make it in time for your child’s events. A number of additional championship events will be held on the school oval on Tuesday 14th March 2017, including jumping and throwing events. Participation in these championship events will be for a number of students from each faction who have qualified during phys ed lessons. Students will be notified ahead of the day.
School Attendance
We closely monitor the attendance of each student across the course of a year and it is our responsibility to make you aware of the number of absences that your child has had. The average rate of attendance last year slipped behind previous years. One quarter of all students at Margaret River Primary School missed a day of school every fortnight in 2016. This is a huge disruption to students’ learning. If you are considering taking your children out of school for reasons other than illness, please consider the impact that this can have on their learning. Please make use of the MRPS App to let us know if your child is away each day and this information will be passed onto classroom teachers without requiring you to send in a note.

It’s never too early to teach children the value of
money. Research indicates that it is crucial to
develop financial literacy skills from an early age.
The Start Smart Primary program teaches these
skills in a way that students can understand and
enjoy.
Our Year 3 and 4 students have had a class visit
from CBA representative Amber who has taken
them through a range of activities where students
are inspired to become ‘cashletes’. They develop
their money muscles through making savvy
spending decisions, using a practical, comparative
shopping exercise. Students are encouraged to
understand factors that influence their spending.
Several of the concepts covered by Year 3
students were:
Credit cards and keycards
Earning money
Spending habits
Comparative shopping
Maximising saving
Students in Year 4 started their workshop by
reinforcing these concepts and then covered:
Representing monetary values in multiple ways
Counting change required for simple transactions
Solving problems involving purchases
Introducing budgets
Students were very engaged during these sessions
and implement some of this information in their
maths activities.

Evacuation Drill
On Friday at school we held our first evacuation drill for

orderly manner to our evacuation point on the oval, and
Mr Thomas addressed the students about the importance
of conducting such safety procedures in the event that an
emergency situation should arise.

Student Health and Wellbeing MRPS Code of Conduct incorporates six core values:
Cooperation, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Honesty and Respect
(SDERA) School Drug Education & Road Aware Be a good role model and always wear your helmet when you ride with your child. The earlier children learn the
importance of wearing a bike helmet, the more likely they will continue to wear a helmet as they grow older. Be
firm in laying down the ‘no-helmet-no-bike’ rule and set a good example by wearing a helmet yourself.
Check your helmet
A helmet that is worn correctly and fits properly can help to protect your child’s head if they fall off their bike,
scooter or skate board. Help your child to check that their helmet is the right size by checking the following:
• The helmet isn’t too tight or too loose. It should be snug and not move around.
• The buckles can be clipped together.
• The helmet has not been in a crash.
• The foam on the inside doesn’t have any dents.
• The plastic skin on the outside isn’t buckled or cracked.
• The chinstrap isn’t broken or frayed.
• It is an Australian standards approved helmet.
Sometimes ‘hand-me-down’ helmets are not always safe to use. Use the
checklist to find out if it is safe and suitable or needs to be thrown away.
When it’s time to buy your child a bike and helmet don’t buy one for your child to ‘grow into’, buy one that fits
your child now. If it’s too big and loose, it can move or slip off when your child falls off their bike or hits
something. Did you know a bicycle helmet is designed to offer the wearer protection and, if worn correctly, may
decrease the risk of a head injury by up to 85%? Non-helmeted cyclists are three times more likely to be killed as
a result of a crash.
When riding on a shared path, always make sure you:
• Give way to pedestrians.
• Keep to the left.
• Use your bell to warn others when you are approaching.
• Be careful around young children, dogs and older pedestrians, as they are often unpredictable in their
movements.
Travel at a safe speed so you can stop within a safe distance of pedestrians on the path.
Thank you for playing a vital role in your child’s road safety education.

FOCUS CORE VALUE—Honesty
One of the Margaret River Primary School Virtues is Honesty.
Honesty is being fair, just and truthful; not cheating or stealing.
Honesty means you don't say things about people that aren't true. You are not being honest if you make up
rumours about someone. An example of not being honest is when people spread rumours about others at
school or on social media.
Honesty includes not hiding the truth because that is deceiving, not breaking rules to gain an advantage because
that is cheating, and not taking something that isn't yours because that is stealing.
Remember - “Honesty is the Best Policy.”
