Coin CollectionMost of us no longer carry a pocket or purse full of change but we often do have a few coins. The next time you find yourself with a coin or two bring them with you to Sunday Mass and put them in the collection basket. What good will your dime do? This past summer, joined with other’s change, it provided a ride to work for a returning citizen so he could keep his job, pay his rent and not become homeless. A child in a school for children with problems is able to work on a craft, the materials paid for with your coins, and feel joy instead of anger or frustration. Just by putting in your one small dime you made someone else’s life a little better. Let’s make putting change in the collection basket a habit.

People Working CooperativelyJoin an IHM team to do a home repair project, so that low income elderly people can remain in their homes. We will work with the Repair Affair Project sponsored by People Working Cooperatively. Each year PWC provides thousands of low~income, elderly, and disabled homeowners with a higher quality of living. Our professionally trained staff, along with thousands of volunteers, help Ohio residents with critical home repairs, energy conservation and weatherization, mobility modifications, and maintenance services. IHM’s SACC (Social Action Coordinating Commission) would like to find 6–8 people to join an IHM Team to work Saturday morning November 17, for a 4 hr commitment. Adults and teens who are accompanied by an adu1t are encouraged to join in this rewarding experience. Please contact Jack Newfield at [email protected].

Ushers NeededWe are in need of ushers, specifically for the 9:30 a.m.

Masses. Please contact Steve Frazer, [email protected]

striving to live and share the Good News and grow in discipleship with the Lord. 5

The next Heartbeat deadline is October 29. Please send all articles to Michelle Peters at [email protected].

Coat CollectionThe annual IHM Coat Collection will take place October 27 and 28. Please bring any new or gently used coats to be placed in bins after all the Masses. The coats will be distributed to St. Leo The Great Parish in Cincinnati serving people in need.

A bit about St. Leo the Great Parish:St. Leo the Great Parish is where foreign mission meets home mission. A vibrant, diverse, urban Catholic parish community living the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, St. Leo’s serves a diverse group of parishioners that includes recent immigrants and refugees. Founded in 1886, St. Leo Church was founded by German Catholic immigrants and now it is home to Burundian, Congolese and Guatemalan immigrants.

IHM School will Walk with Jesus for the 2018/2019 School Year Each year IHM school orders Class Shirts for our students to wear on field trips, Spirit Wear Days and various celebrations. Each grade is a different color to signify the different classes. The last several years we have had a t-shirt contest for our students to design the back of the shirt using the school theme for the year. This year 7th Grader Kelly F. won the contest for the design depicting our theme “Walk with Jesus” Our IHM students are excited and proud to wear their class shirts to promote our school. Congratulations Kelly!

Married Couples DinnerThe speaker for our next married Couples Dinner on Saturday, November 10th is Susan Vogt, who will be talking about parenting both younger children and adult children. Susan serves as an advisor for the US Bishops Committee on Marriage and Family. She wrote the book, “Parenting Your Adult Child” in which she addresses how parenting changes with adult children, and how painful it can be when our adult children no longer practice the faith. If you have adult children or want your younger children, as they get older, to still hear you, please join us for the Married Couples Dinner, beginning at 6 p.m. in Heritage Hall. Please see registration form in back of bulletin.

6 We are a welcoming Catholic community centered in the Eucharist,

Encountering Christ in a Personal Way Today:

Today in the Gospel reading (Mark 10:46–52), Jesus shows compassion by giving Bartimaeus what he asks for: the gift of sight. Jesus asks you today, “What do you want me to do for you?” What do you answer? Can you imagine Jesus giving that to you? Why or why not?

SACC and the Hispanic Ministry invite all the commission members and their spouses to our annual Building Relationships Luncheon November 11 in Heritage Hall following the 1:30 p.m. Mass. If you are able to join us it is a potluck meal so please bring your favorite dish. If you can come RSVP 388-4466 so that we have enough food for all. You are welcome to worship at the 1:30 p.m. Mass prior to the luncheon.

IHM School to Host Fall Open House Immaculate Heart of Mary School will host 2 Fall Open House Events for prospective and current families. Tours will be available on Tuesday, November 6th for Grades K through 5th and for Grades 6th through 8th on Thursday, November 8th. Both evenings begin at 5:30 p.m. and will conclude at 7 p.m. Faculty and staff will be available both evenings to answer questions and offer insight into the core curriculum, related arts and programs available to students at IHM School. There is no need to register. If you would prefer a private tour please call 513-388-3020 for more information. We invite you to come see why so many choose IHM School!

Respect Life 40 Days for Life (Sept. 26 to Nov. 4)IHM has 1 day left to participate in the 40 Days for Life.

IHM’s Second Day at Planned Parenthood is Sat., Nov. 3. This is public prayer—a powerful means of petition, to ask God and Our Lady for an end of abortion.

Please use Sign-up Genius https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b49a4a923a0fa7-40days or sign up for an hour on the easel at the back of church.

Do You See the Childlike Innocence in Others? When you look into a child’s eyes, you can see his or her innocence. There is a precious quality that a child possesses. With this innocence, children have a joyous enthusiasm for life and can freely receive God’s love. As we age, we seem to lose joyous enthusiasm, or at least forget about it, as we encounter life experiences that clutter our minds and harden our souls. Our discussion will focus on how we can overcome these barriers, as the Scripture says, “unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3

Thanksgiving Day Bread Do you like to bake? Would you like to be a part of one of IHM’s most cherished traditions? Each year at the Thanksgiving Day Mass, we take time to bless bread baked by parishioners. Those attending Mass that morning are then invited to take home a loaf of bread to be used as part of their Thanksgiving meal.

This can only happen with the help of many who are willing to share their time and bake bread. Attendance at this Mass is very high and we want to make sure that those who would like to take a loaf of bread home are able to do so! Bread can be any kind, half loaf–1 pound size. If it contains nuts or peanut butter, please mark that on the wrapping.

The bread can be dropped off at the Parish Office any time after November 4th and will be frozen. If it must be kept fresh, we will need it no later than noon on Wednesday, November 21st.

Our goal is 250–300 loaves. Last year there were 174 loaves donated. To insure that we had bread for everyone who wished to take it, we purchased enough to cover the difference. While that’s ok if necessary, being able to share home baked bread with our parish family is really what it’s about. This is a great “one time” way to share your gifts!

Join us for this annual tradition! Mass is at 9 a.m. and is a wonderful way to start the day.

Questions? Contact Carol Braun at 528-4866 or [email protected]

MFL Nov. 5th Special Invitation Ladies Welcomed!Returning as MFL’s November guest speaker is Steven J. Squires, MEd, MA, PhD, VP Mission and Ethics, Mercy Health. Dr. Squires last presentation was the fascinating two part series on DNA. November’s topic is “Moral Wonderland: Moral issues and decisions during the holidays … and beyond! A light-hearted, humorous look at moral decision-making styles and concepts through the filters of the holidays (and holiday stress).”

A special invitation is extended to all ladies to join the men for this enjoyable evening of inspiration, discussion, fellowship and great refreshments. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. Any questions please contact John Hunt at 513-375-2286.

After-Mass Fair Trade Seller NeededCan you spare 30 minutes of your time after the 5 p.m. Saturday Mass once a month?

The IHM Fair Trade ministry needs someone to sell these delicious products (coffee, chocolate & olive oil) on the second Saturday of every month. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who already attends the 5 p.m. Mass to add a little social action ministry to their life.

Please call or email Jim Burridge to volunteer. 474-3850 [email protected]

Update on our twinning partner CCBN, Managua, NicaraguaThe Center has remained open to be a support and calm oasis for all of its staff and students. This semester classes have been in session since July but with 30–40% less students depending on the class. All of the teachers are being paid despite how many students are in their classes. The grade schools and high schools have remained open throughout this political crisis, but the universities have not reopened since closing in April. 300 Nicaraguans have been killed. There are 350 political prisoners. Over 150,000 individuals are unemployed due to companies closing and mass layoffs. Please keep the people of Nicaragua in your prayers. CCBN thanks all of us for our continued prayers and support.

10 We are a welcoming Catholic community centered in the Eucharist,

The Angel Tree Project Calling all interested volunteers!IHM is once again participating in the Angel Tree Project which is administered by Prison Fellowship Ministries, a national organization. Its purpose is to maintain the bonds between parent and child when a parent is incarcerated.

In our country there are currently 3 million persons incarcerated in our prisons and there are approximately 9 million children with an incarcerated parent. We believe that these children deserve to see that their parents love them; we believe that parents need to maintain contact with their children. Participants in the Angel Tree project are the link between the incarcerated parent and his or her children.

Please consider participating in this worthwhile endeavor. Volunteers are needed to shop for a $25 gift for each child and/or deliver that gift to the child’s home on behalf of the parent. If you want to work behind the scenes, we need people to call and arrange the visit times or provide finances to purchase the gifts. You do not have to handle everything—sign up to participate as you can. Last year IHM provided gifts for 51 children. We hope to do the same this year and need your help.

Donations can be sent IHM; please reference Angel Tree Project in the check memo line. If you have any questions, please contact one of the committee co-chairs: Kathleen Donnellan; [email protected]; or Joanne Middlekamp; [email protected].

Social Action Coordinating CommissionSocial Action Commission is looking for new members to fill open positions. We need someone who has a passion for Respect Life and have openings for the committee on Abolition of the Death Penalty, and prevention of Assisted Suicide. We have open positions in renewing our Human Trafficking team. If you are interested in more information on these openings or Social Action Commission and what we do, please call Sherrie Heyse at 513-843-7188 or email me at [email protected]

Our Lady of the Mountains Thanksgiving Dinner On Nov. 10th we will once again be going to Our Lady of the Mountains for their Thanksgiving Dinner for senior citizens. We will be serving and visiting with the people attending. Children are welcome if they are old enough to work in a crowded room. Call, text or email me. Judy O’Brien 513-274-8026. [email protected]. We will meet at IHM by the Welcome Center at 8 a.m. and be back here by mid afternoon. If you cannot go but could contribute a donation to help them pay for the food it would be greatly appreciated. Checks can be sent to Our Lady of the Mountains, PO Box 727 Stanton, KY 40380.

Nicaragua Prayer Services SACC will be leading a prayer service in the church on Thursday Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. for the people of Nicaragua. Please keep the people of CCBN in your prayers. Prayer services will be held monthly, alternating between Wednesday at 10 a.m. and Thursday at 7 p.m. Prayer services are scheduled for the following dates: Nov. 15, Dec. 12, Jan. 10, Feb. 13, Mar. 14.

Archdiocesan Lay Pastoral Ministry Program now interviewing for Spring Classes Have you ever said, “Someone should start a Scripture Study group.” Or, “Someone should evangelize in our neighborhood!” Or “We have so many elderly housebound parishioners. Someone should organize a visitation team.” Well, you are right! Someone should. Maybe that someone is you. The Archdiocesan Lay Pastoral Ministry Program has educated and formed lay men and women just like you for service to parishes, schools and communities since 1975. We offer graduate and non-degreed options, spiritual and ministerial formation and the opportunity to grow in faith, knowledge and skills. Evening and Saturday classes, flexible components and a great support system allow busy adults to maintain work and family commitments while preparing for new opportunities. Classes are available in Spring of 2019 at the main campus in Mt. Washington and Good Shepherd in Montgomery. All lay students receive a 25% tuition reduction this spring. Call 513-231-1200 or email [email protected] for more information or to set up a personal interview. You too, go into my vineyard.

Election Day is November 6. In the Catholic Tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. The responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience.

Catholic voters are called to properly form their consciences in preparation for voting and for the continued advocacy for just laws and policies required after voting. This process should focus on moral principles, the defense of life, the needs of the weak, and the pursuit of the common good. It requires constant prayer, understanding of Church teaching, and discernment that goes beyond campaign rhetoric and partisan politics.
