~ We meet to talk about the 'capacity for greatness

and goodness in man, and not his meanness.

~We meet to talk. I I •

There was a crusty old farm leader in Washington

during the early days of the New Deal. His name was

George Peek. George Peek said: "The common characteristic

of all uplifters is an unquenchable thirst for conversation.

They are all chain talkers." - ~ ~'" M~ ~ ~o be. it. Let us talk. Let us think. Let us agree

and disagree. Then, my fellow Democrats, let

us act.

also know the value of ideas and of action. We are no~

' My mission here tonight, as indicated by the

prog.ram, is to offer a "salute to California.".,. • =.;....~ ZJ.he real worth of California is not its pleasant

climate or its abundant resources. ~ ~

/.The real strength of Californitis in its people - -

their ski lis, their i ntelli~ence, their progressive

spirit.

J.. And the genius of California is evident in its

leaders, most of whom just happen to be Democrats• =

" I've heard it said that Governor Brown has what

some experts call an "image problem." The pollsters u a

and the punsters have not been too kind to him lately.

~ There are two big reasons why such talk is nonsense,

and why the Republicans should not order any confetti

for next year.

1.. I will just say the same thing to the people of

California today that I said to some students for

Goldwater whom I met in San Jose last year: "'I don't mind if you study ancient history, but,
