Lighting Analysis: We Found Love

I think lighting plays a really important role in music videos, either to make it more visually pleasing or to create a type of mood that the artist wants the song to be in. I thought I

would begin to analyse Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ because the lighting plays a important role in this, and a change in lighting runs throughout. For the majority of the music video,

there are blue and green tones with a low key lighting to indicate the destructive relationship.

The first scene in the music video is one of my favourites. The voice over becomes really effective against the visuals. I think in this scene in particular the lighting

plays a vital role of setting the tone for the rest of the video. The dark shadows I’ve the face create a distance between the two characters. It could be argued that bathrooms are typically bright but here, it seem they are not. The contrast of between appearance and reality, sets the tone for the music video instantly.

This is my favourite lighting in the entire music video, because it sets the mood of the moment perfectly. The dark lighting brings warmth to the scene however, the visuals

contrast dramatically which challenges viewers.
