We did it! By: Teri McCall The week before the First Annual Fall Festival was very, very busy. Folks were signing up to volunteer, plans were being made, supplies gathered, scouts were building fire pits for the apple butter kettles and tables were set up in the Fellowship Hall. What a wonderful weekend it was. The weather was great. Friday night the apple peeling crew peeled apples under the portico and lis- tened to toe-tapping music by our own Jim Regin, Michael Karnes and John Gray. Early Saturday morning the apple butter crew lit the fire un- der the kettles and began stirring. They were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise. The breakfast crew also arrived to start the sausage and gra- vy, and by 8:00 a.m. they were serv- ing breakfast to the largest breakfast crowd we have ever had. There were folks lined up almost out the door at one point. Norman and Lilly Brown also had delicious ribs cook- ing on the grill. The Silent Auction was under way by 8:00 a.m. with more than 200 items to bid on. The auction was busy right up till the last moment, with a few items causing a bidding war. At 5:00 p.m. the Low Country Boil was ready in the Farmer’s Mar- ket. This event was sched- uled from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. but by 5:45 p.m. we were sold out! Within 24 hours we sold out of two kettles of apple butter, had the largest breakfast crowd we have ev- er had, sold 50 racks of ribs, sold out of food at the Low Country Boil and sold the majority of the items at the Silent Auction. How did all this happen? YOU made it happen. Volunteers working the whole week and especially Fri- day night and all day Saturday. We worked together, had fun together and raised almost $11,000. This money will go towards pay- ing off our loan that was taken out three years ago for a badly needed update and renovation of FUMC. Let’s do it again, next year, at our 2nd Annual Fall Festival!!! The week before the First Annual Fall Festival was very, very busy. Folks were signing up to volunteer, plans were being made, supplies gathered, scouts were building fire pits for the apple butter kettles and tables were set up in the Fellowship Hall. What a wonderful weekend it was. The weather was great. Friday

It’s church directory time….. By Teri McCall

No, that does not mean that a professional photog-rapher is going to set up and pressure you to purchase several photo packages…..promise. This is going to be fun. Sunday, October 30, Kay Clawson and Sarah Martin will have their cameras ready to take candid photos of anyone who would like to have their picture in the church directory. They will be set up outside the Fellowship Hall in the Wesleyan Room. Don’t wear green! Why? Because of the green screen you will be standing in front of. The green screen will allow us use different backgrounds in the directory. We also ask that everyone complete a new Individ-ual & Family Information Sheet. This will help us to keep our records current. Even if your address and phone numbers have not changed, please complete a new form so that we can verify that we have the cor-rect information. Mrs. Carolyn Jones will have the forms ready for you to complete when you stop by the Wesleyan Room to have your picture taken.

Sunday, October 30, 2016 Between the 8:45 & 9:50 Service Between the 9:50 & 11:00 Service After the 11:00 Service In the Wesleyan Room outside the Fellowship Hall

We will be scheduling more opportunities for you to have your picture made in the coming weeks.

No matter how long it’s been since your loved one died, grief can make the holidays a painful time. But there’s hope. Join us for an encouraging seminar that will help you survive the holidays and discover new reasons to enjoy them again.

Tuesday, November 22, 2016

A new Stephen Ministers class of five began October 6

and we couldn’t be happier. The class will finish it’s 50 hours of training around the middle of March, unless the schedule is altered due to bad weather. Commissioning ser-vices will take place shortly afterwards and this new group will start the second phase of ongoing training, which con-sists of attending twice-monthly Continuing Education and Supervision classes. We thank God for the dedication of our Stephen Ministers. Should you have a concern or situation where a caring, listening, non-judgmental, confidential and trustworthy Ste-phen Minister could provide emotional and spiritual care to you, please contact Denton Staley or James McNeil to assist you in getting a Stephen Minister. We care about you. We ask for your prayers and your support of this ministry.

November is National Diabetes Month

Every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes, a disease that kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. The American Diabetes Association’s website states that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless steps are taken to stop this disease.

Early detection is critical. This is why First United Methodist Church is hosting Life Line Screening, the nation’s leading provider of preven-tive health screenings on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. One of the tests is a simple blood test for glucose (sugar), which can determine if a person is at risk of developing dia-betes. Other screenings include tests to check for blocked carot-id arteries, atrial fibrillation, and high blood pressure, which are the three leading risk factors for stroke. Nearly 800,000 strokes will occur this year, taking a life approximately every four minutes. There are also tests to check for abdominal aortic aneu-rysms and PAD, also called “hardening of the arteries” in the legs. Diabetes is a major risk factor for stroke and is directly related to Peripheral Arterial Disease. Recommendations for people with diabetes include a PAD test starting at age 50. Screening packages start at $139. Single tests cost around $70. For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-888-653-6441. Pre-registration is required.

You have heard it said many times: we are a church family. That has been so evident recently in all of our services, activities and fellowship shared. The Fall Festival was such a huge success resulting in almost $11,000 being raised to go towards our Build-ing Renovation loan. This is a true testament of God’s faithfulness. One way our church family can continue to share is by being a part of the planning pro-cess for all of the wonderful ministries FUMC will be offering in 2017, which is quickly ap-proaching. A significant piece of this planning is our budget process. The budget proposal starts with all committees submitting their vi-sion and dreams for 2017. The budget is compiled and presented by the Finance Com-mittee and then accepted by the Administra-tive Board. The budget that is presented to the congregation is a budget that we want you to feel you can support with all your heart. Our church family can rejoice over so many things: the loving spirit we give to one another; the way we give beyond ourselves through local, national and worldwide out-reach; the activities our children and young people share; worship services that glorify God and uplift us; and the fellowship of one another. The budget, when financially supported by our congregation, will allow us to share these and many more activities and programs and help us serve God and one another through-out the coming year. Please give it your prayerful consideration when submitting your commitment card for the 2017 year. Third Quarter Contribution Statements have been mailed. Please take time to review your statement. If you find there are any dis-crepancies, please notify me so that we have time to make the necessary corrections be-fore year end.

FUMC has a staff position titled “Program Director” but if FUMC were a baseball team, the job title would be “utility player,” to Denton

Staley. He has done, and can do, everything from start-ing the boilers to cooking breakfast to planning the church’s programs. Denton started working for FUMC in 1976 for thirty hours a week as Youth Director. He left the job in 1980 to work the farm and returned a few years later as full time Youth Director. While working full time for the church, he attended Emory & Henry College and graduated with a degree in Business and Econom-ics. Denton was married to Sarah Sparger for thirty-three years until she died in 2009. They had three children: Jessica is a teacher at Chilhowie Elementary and resides in Abingdon; Aaron and his wife Melissa live in northern Virginia and they are expecting their first child, a boy, in November; Nathan is married to Heather, daughter of Tom and Joyce Collup, who also attend FUMC. Nathan and Heather have two children, Emma and Reid, and live in Salem. He designs wetlands. Denton is now married to Amanda Baxter, daughter of Barbara and Bill Gordon (step-father) who also attend FUMC. Amanda manages the Helping Hands Thrift Store on Main Street and administers the Goolsby Foun-dation. She also pitches in and helps with a variety of church activities. As the church utility player, aka Program Director,

Denton: plans all types of church programs from Sunday

School to mission trips, with a CDL, he drives the church vehicles for the

Joy Group, J.A.M., Food and Fellowship, and Mis-sion Trips,

makes announcements at Sunday morning worship services,

helps with visitation teams, keeps Sunday School rolls and records, helps with meal preparations, occasionally teaches Bible study classes, is a Stephen Ministry Trainer. (FUMC sent him to

Mediation Conciliation Training in 1996 which he says helps him with this relatively new program at FUMC),

works with Upward Basketball (now the Beyond Basketball & Cheer program) and Upward Soccer.

When he has free time, Denton likes to ride his boat on the South Holston Lake. He also drives a race car occasionally in Sports Club of America races. He and Amanda enjoy riding their motorcycles. Amanda and Denton share their home with a golden retriever named Yoshi. Thank you, Denton, for serving FUMC with your talents and caring personality, and for not limiting your service to your job description.

Children’s Ministry Committee will meet Tuesday, November 1, at 6:30.

Acolyte Training: November 20 at 4:00 p.m.

In the Sanctuary There will be a training for all acolytes currently serving

and any children, youth or adults that would like to serve as an acolyte in the sanctuary on November 20, at 4:00 p.m. Anyone 8 years old or in third grade and older may serve as acolytes. Training is held during Jesus and Me after school program periodically and on an as needed basis for new aco-lytes. When a young person serves God by being an acolyte, he or she is doing more than carrying a flame to light the altar candles. An acolyte is symbolically bringing the light of Christ’s spirit into the worship service. By serving God and our faith community in this way, it is our hope that acolytes

are able to find spiritual meaning and fulfillment. Serving as

acolyte is also a way to make new friends, have fun, and grow through service to our church.
