NEWSLETTERJuly/August 2016
SPRING IS COMINGThe colder weather has brought the winter woollies, gumboots and scarves out of
retirement and kept us rugged up and warm while we tackle the cold mornings and
chilly evenings. The weather has been a mixture of cold and wet with a pinch of warm
sunny days to keep us on our toes each week, working hard through colds and flus,
and the ailments that winter brings with it each year. Spring is on the horizon and with
that in mind it's time to start thinking about what this means for you health wise and
is it time to book in with the fitness team for an assessment and programme to get the
spring in your step as the seasons start to warm up? Great things are a foot at the Y and
we can't wait to share them with you.
NEW PRESIDENTA warm welcome to Brian Wilson who has been elected as the YMCA Gisborne's
new President during July. Brian has been an active board member for many years
and has brought a wealth of support and knowledge during this time, ensuring the
YMCA stays true and loyal to its vision and mission throughout our community. As
Alan Davidson winds down his role as president to continue on the Board, Brian has
stepped into this position with ease and we look forward to having his leadership and
the ongoing support from the Board to be the driving force in health and well being
to continue to build strong kids, strong families and a strong Gisborne community.

What a wicked 2 weeks of amazing adventures with Holiday Programme.
Highlights included the Photo Quiz, Finding Dory, Kaiti School Bike Trail, planting
trees on Kaiti Hill with D.O.C and visiting both the main Museum and the Museum
of Technology.
Unfortunately due to low registrations, Camp Mahia was cancelled for the
second week of the Holidays, with some very disappointed kids who were
super excited for a week of adventure in the beautiful bay of Mahia. Have no
fear though, because Camp Mahia/Hawkesbay is resceduled for the warmer
weather of summer where we can take full advantage of the water, beaches and
explore the surroundings of our Camp site, travel to Hawkes Bay and sightsee.
CAN'T WAIT FOR SUMMER
NIPPERSWith our numbers in the programme
exceeding expectations, we had full
groups each day, with lots of new faces
to mingle with our regular families,
having a blast with so many activities
on offer here at the Y. Finding Dory,
Botanical Gardens, Wheels Day and
the Museum of Technology certainly
had the younger kids jumping with
excitement not to mention our day
trip to Morere which is a regular part
of our Holiday Programmes. With
the new addition of Kaiti School bike
trail, Trudy put the kids through the
importance of bike safety and care.
SENIORSWOW who would have thought that
Tramp and Gym Club would have
our Seniors challenging each other
to bounce to new heights, pushing
them to try rolls, flips and spins that
they may not have ever tried before.
Eastwood Hill was magical, with our
Image Quiz being a highlight for the
older group. Skate Park, cooking
and team building challenged the
Seniors to work together and step up
into leadership roles, proving that
we have natural leaders amoungst us
with others happy to take a step back
and let them lead.
JUNIORSWho wouldn't want to be a part of the
Juniors group, when you get to spend
the day at the Skate Park, planting
trees on Kaiti Hill with D.O.C, splash
in the warmth of the Enterprise Pools,
and of course Finding Dory was a hit.
Cooking up a storm, Amazing Race
Gizzy Style, Tramp Club and Olympic
Pools had our middle age range busy
with lots of team building, exploring
and not to leave out the new release
BFG movie which was at the top of the
list for best days. Party Day was, as
always a day of excitement and fun,
games and of course lots of food to fill
the hungry tummies for the last day

The Juniors learnt how to make fry
bread and one of their high lights
was the Trampoline and Gymnastic
Club. The seniors enjoyed a trip
to Eastwood hill cooking, playing
squash, badminton and going to the
Movies. A highlight for the seniors
‘Sh’Bam’ with Sam.
The children spent an afternoon
planting trees on Titirangi - Kaiti
Hill and thoroughly enjoyed this
activity. A special thanks to Charles
Barrie from the Department of
Conservation and De-Arne Sullivan
from the Gisborne District Council
who supported this activity and
taught the children the importance of
planting trees in our community.
We were very fortunate to have
four students from Hong Kong who
interacted well with the children and
staff and participated in all of our
activities.
To the parent’s caregivers and
whanau, it has been a pleasure
having your children in our Holiday
Programme and we look forward
to seeing them again at our next
Holiday Programme.
Last but not least a special thanks
to the OSCAR staff and the YMCA
staff who at times were on standby
to support the OSCAR team with the
children.
Max Haraki
It is with great excitement that we introduce our four international volunteers,
who have travelled all the way from Hong Kong to spend 6 weeks of their
semester break, volunteering their time with the YMCA Gisborne.
The girls have been sharing their time between our three Early Childcare
Centres; Y Kids, Y Arataha, Y Tamariki, aswell as After School Care and
Holiday Programme, getting to know our staff and families.
All 4 girls have been getting immersed in kiwi culture, having farm visits,
checking out Rere Rockslide, Tolaga Bay, trying their hand at fishing and have
fallen in love with Hokey Pokey icecream. ( Haven't we all)
The girls will be leaving at the end of August and we wish them well on their
next adventure.
OSCARKia ora koutou katoa.
Term 2 was another success with our
Out of School Care and Recreation
(OSCAR) programme. Our Nippers,
Juniors, Seniors and Active Learning
groups took part in a range of
activities from arts & crafts, having a
Minion week, making dream catchers,
sport activities and games, learning
about ANZAC day visiting Captain
Cook Monument, going to the skate-
park, cooking, and watching movies.
Our Holiday Programme was another
awesome success with an average of
80 – 100 children a day.
The children enjoyed our local parks,
arts and crafts, visiting the Museum
of Technology which was one of the
highlights for some of our juniors.
The Nippers enjoyed the Bike Trail at
Kaiti School, swimming at Enterprise
Pools going to the Botanical Gardens
and doing arts and crafts.

LIFE CHANGING
Kahurangi Tarsau came to the YMCA Fitness Centre with one goal in mind, and
that was to strengthen his legs after being born with Hypermobile Meniscus in
both his knees. Little did he know that he would become a part of the Y Family,
have ongoing support and guidance and make friends in places he never realised
he would. With Gerald's support and guidance Kahu has become a confident and
strong young lad, training twice a week, getting fitter and allowing his strengths
to develop along the way. His friendship with "Gerry" has also given him an
understanding of his muscles and how they work in order to get the results he
seeks. Well done Kahu, such a great achievement, keep up the great work.

PRYME FIT WITH SHIRLEYMonday mornings are never easy but our PrYme Fit class puts the M in moving.
Our Monday PrYme Fit group have been working hard on their balance and
mobility with Shirley guiding them through specialised exercises to strengthen
crucial muscles to support and enhance mobility. Stretching is such an important
part of being mobile and whether you are exercising or not, stretching is a
simple way to ensure that muscles stay flexible and don't become tight or pull
when engaging in daily activities and movement. PrYme Fit meets each Monday
morning at 9:30am in the stadium and for a small cost of $3 per class you can
ensure that your mobility and balance are on par to being strong and managable.

Y TAMARIKI Y Tamariki has been making the most of the sunshine and getting outside where
possible. The sandpit is a continued hit with our tamariki, making multiple sand
structures, taking turns at making sand cakes and serving cups of sand tea to the
staff. As well as sandpit play, the tamariki have been having fun playing dress
up and with so many options to choose from, we are never short of a few fairies,
superheros and ballerinas around the centre. Check out the new colour scheme
of our Centre with the outside being painted in the new grey with splashes of
red popping up once all our signage is finished, so keep a watch out for those
coming soon. We are currently taking enrollments for our Centre, so if you have
a child or know of a family looking for an exciting, fun and engaging bicultural
environment where tamariki are encouraged to grow through play then please
contact the centre for an enrollment pack.
NOTHING BUT THE BEST IN OUR CENTRES

After 10 years at the helm of the kitchen , it is with great sadness that we farewell
our Y Kids Centre cook ; Leonie Carlyle who prepared and served our tamariki
their daily meals throughout her time with the YMCA.
Leonie was a strong fixture in our centre kitchen where our children, families and
staff got to sample Leonie's culinary flare and expertise. Many a recipe has been
developed in the Y Kids kitchen.
She will be greatly missed and we wish her well for her future endevour.
KA KITE ANO LEONIE
Y KIDS
Y Kids has had the pleasure of Wing,
one of our four volunteers from
Hong Kong in the centre, playing
her ukulele for our tamariki. Our
Matariki morning tea was a great
success, with everyone enjoying
the morning. Exciting times in our
indoor environment- check out the
tamariki using the resources for some
mathematic concepts.

Y ARATAHA
What’s been happening at Y Arataha this month I hear you ask? With
the celebrations coming to an end for Matariki, Y Arataha tamariki and
staff assisted in the preparation and putting down of a hangi at the end of
week two of the school holidays. It was a highlight to have whanau join
in and enjoy the process with us, dining with the tamariki and enjoying a
delicious hangi. The teachers have been busy getting their areas reset for
the new term, with new themes and activities planned as we get ready for
our ERO(Education Review Office) review and report at the end of August.
