Greetings!!!
On behalf of the Charlotte (NC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated I
would like to congratulate the young men of the 39th Annual Kappa Beautillion Militaire. Our
chapter is extremely pleased and proud that our program was selected to assist these young
men as they begin to grow into the leaders of the future. The fundamental purpose of Kappa
Alpha Psi is achievement. To that end we hope that we have instilled in them the desire to
achieve and be successful in all of their future endeavors. These young men have persevered
and worked to acquire skills and abilities that will make them successful in the future.
I would like to thank the parents and supporters of these young men. You have provided that
guiding light that is so often needed to help show them the right way and give direct support to
the positive things that they learn and experience.
The Beautillion Militaire was the brainchild of Charlotte Alumni Chapter's own, the late Dr. C.W.
Williams, M.D. Brother Williams envisioned a program that would provide a structured
atmosphere for young men to develop socially, culturally and intellectually through mentored
workshops while providing scholarship opportunities. Since the orientation program in
September we have watched these young men live out the Founding Brother’s dream. We
believe that they have acquired the basic knowledge and skills that will lead them to be leaders
of the next generation.
To this years’ participants we wish the continued blessings of our Creator. We also hope that as
you continue to achieve and be successful you will encourage and motivate others to develop to
their fullest potential. We look forward to your future successes.
Sincerely,
William A. Simmons

Greetings,
To the Families, Escorts, Guest, Sponsors, and Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi, it is indeed a
pleasure to greet you on this special occasion of our “39th Annual Kappa Beautillion
Militaire”. Our theme this year is “Shaping the Future for Leadership and
Development!” As always, it is rewarding to work the young men who chose to
participate in the Beautillion Militaire Scholarship Program. The young men of this year’s
program have all demonstrated to the members of the Kappa Beautillion Militaire
Scholarship Program Committee (KBMSPC), that they are ready to complete the final
phase of our Rights of Passage Ceremony, and step into the role of manhood. I want to
express sincere thanks to the parents of these men for allowing me, and other members of
the Charlotte (NC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Inc., the opportunity to insert
positive values, ethics, and social characteristics into their lives as they enter the college
and universities of their choice. Your kindness, understanding, support, and financial
contributions have helped to make this year’s Beautillion Militaire Scholarship program a
huge success.
To the young men participating in the 39th Annual Kappa Beautillion Militaire, you have
earned our respect and admiration with your commitment, character, intellect, and talent.
You should be proud of yourself, and hold your head high for accomplishing this major
milestone. You all are truly gifted, and we will be looking for great things from each and
every one of you as you attend the college of your choice. Be confident and in always seek
to excel at whatever you chose to do in life. There is no doubt in my mind that you will make
a significant impact on the world. Today is the beginning of your success story. God is the
author and the illustrator. You just have to be the character, and live the story. Remember,
“It’s not what you know, or who you know, but who knows you” that is important. First
and foremost, make sure you know God, and He knows you. He will never let you down.
On this special day, your special day, we salute you. We pass on to you A LEGACY OF
LEADERSHIP, DEVELOPMENT, and ACHIEVEMENT. Take the lightning rod clinched in
your fist, the power of God and all that the Kappa Beautillion Militaire stands for, and go
forth. Never quit pursuing your dreams! Winners never quit, and quitters never win. The
spirit of the Kappa Beautillion Militaire belongs to you, pass it on! Never take your
responsibility as a former Kappa Beau lightly. Remember to reach back to help those
behind you who need guidance, support, love, and direction. In the words of Dr. W.E.B.
Dubois, “Be your own man!” May you have a positive and productive life of success, and
keep your eye on the prize.
Sincerely,
James Curtis Mackey Brandon J. Dillahunt

A Brief History of
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
KAPPA ALPHA PSI, a college Fraternity, now comprised of functioning
Undergraduate and Alumni Chapters on major campuses and in cities throughout the
country, is the crystallization of a dream. It is the beautiful realization of a vision
shared commonly by the late Revered Founders ELDER WATSON DIGGS, JOHN
MILTON LEE, BYRON K. ARMSTRONG, GUY LEVIS GRANT, EZRA D.
ALEXANDER, HENRY T. ASHER, MARCUS P. BLAKEMORE, PAUL CAINE,
EDWARD G. IRVIN and GEORGE W. EDMONDS.
It was the vision of these astute men that enabled them in the school year 1910 - 11,
more specifically the night of January 5, 1911. On the campus of Indiana University at
Bloomington, Indiana, was sown the seed of a fraternal tree whose fruit is now
available to, and enjoyed by college men everywhere, regardless of color, religion or
national origin. It is a fact of which KAPPA ALPHA PSI is justly proud that the
Constitution has never contained any clause, which either excluded or suggested the
exclusion of any man from membership merely because of his color, creed, or
national origin. The Constitution of KAPPA ALPHA PSI is predicated upon, and
dedicated to, the principles of achievement through a truly democratic Fraternity.
The Fraternity's fundamental purpose is achievement. Early in this century, African-
American students were actively dissuaded from attending college. Formidable
obstacles were erected to prevent the few who were enrolled from assimilating into
co-curricular campus life. This ostracism characterized Indiana University in 1911,
thus causing the Founders to form Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, which remains the
only Greek letter organization with its 1st Chapter on the University's campus. They
sought a formula that would immediately raise the sights of black collegians and
stimulate them to accomplishments higher than they might have imagined.
Fashioning achievement as it's purpose, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting college men
of culture, patriotism and honor in a bond of fraternity.
Chartered and incorporated originally under the laws of the State of Indiana as Kappa
Alpha Nu on May 15, 1911, the name was changed to KAPPA ALPHA PSI on a
resolution offered and adopted at the Grand Chapter in December 1914. This change
became effective April 15, 1915, on a proclamation by the then Grand Polemarch,
Elder Watson Diggs. Thus, the name acquired a distinctive Greek letter symbol and
KAPPA ALPHA PSI thereby became a Greek letter Fraternity in every sense of the
designation.
Since the fraternity’s founding, more than 82,000 members have been initiated into
undergraduate and alumni chapters throughout the United States and chapters in the
United Kingdom, Korea, Japan, Germany and the Bahamas.

The History and Objectives
of the
Kappa Beautillion Militaire
The Kappa Beautillion (pronounced bō-til’yen) was developed in Charlotte NC as a
local response to Guide Right, the national service directive of the Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity. Since its inception in 1976 by the late Dr. C.W. Williams, MD, this program
has become a landmark experience for those who have participated and has since
been adopted by Kappa Alumni chapters across the country. The program provides
African American youth with mentoring, guidance, self-awareness, college
preparation, leadership training and scholarships.
Through the non-profit Kappa Foundation of Charlotte, Inc., the men of the Charlotte
Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi volunteer our time and resources “Investing In
Achievement, Together”. The Foundation provides a structured atmosphere for
young men in their senior year of high school to develop socially, culturally and
intellectually through mentored workshops while providing scholarship opportunities.
Students are selected for participation based on character, academic performance,
talent and extracurricular activities. Planned activities culminate with a formal
presentation that will highlight the participant’s development, accomplishments and
talents.

The History of
the Charlotte Alumni Chapter
of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
The Charlotte Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
was founded on June 10th 1944, by three distinguished members.
They are Howard W. Hill, Paris P. McCorkle and Carson H.
Beckwith. The chapter was chartered on May 3, 1953.
Presently, the Charlotte Alumni Chapter is very active in the
community and participates in over 15 annual service events. They
include the Kappa Beautillion Militaire and the Kappa League,
which provide programs and activities for youth, Thanksgiving and
Christmas clothing and food drives, Big Brothers and Big Sisters
program and the Salvation Army Kettle Drive. The chapter has also
made contributions to the uptown Men's Shelter and the United
Negro College Fund on behalf of area black colleges and
universities. In July 2003, we kicked off our 76th National Grand
Chapter Conclave Meeting here in Charlotte by establishing a
Computer Lab at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club on Milton
Road. The chapter has made a tremendous effort at being focused
on working in the community and has been quite successful in
doing so.
Points of interest for the chapter include hosting the 2003 as well
as the 1970 National Grand Chapter meetings, and having several
members that have been recipients of various honors and awards
from both the fraternity and the community. We also have several
prominent brothers that have been members of the chapter such
as: Dr. Reginald Hawkins, who was a civil rights activist; Bro.
William Blakeney, who served in many different capacities for the
fraternity; Bro. Howard C. Barnhill; Dr. Kenneth Chambers and Bro.
Johnny Newman. Additionally we have Bro. Carlos Watson, who is
currently our Senior Province Polemarch. Presently the Charlotte
Alumni Chapter has over 150 active members.
