The effectiveness of boxing as a way to combat the progressive symptoms of
PD has become widely known in recent years. But boxing programs for PWPs
in the Dallas area are still relatively non-existent. Last spring DAPS partnered
with UT Southwestern Department of Physical Therapy to conduct a research
study with the objective of determining any positive physical effects of boxing
on Parkinson’s patients over a short period of time. In addition, PT students
would have the opportunity to participate, gaining hands-on experience with
PD patients and learning about boxing.
I’ve been interested in trying boxing for quite a while, so when I received
the email from DAPS soliciting participants for the study, I pounced on the
opportunity. I already exercise and have a trainer that has included some
basic boxing in workouts, but that’s the extent of my experience. There were
basic guidelines to qualify for the study, but mostly we needed to commit to
attending twice a week for 10 weeks. Sessions were held at the DAPS at
Preston Hollow location in Dallas. This was a reasonable location for me, so
I made the commitment along with eight others at various stages of PD and
physical fitness.
Our leader, and the person who was primarily responsible for putting this study
together, was Mike Braitsch. Mike is a second career physical therapy student
at UTSW who will graduate in December. Most of his life he practiced martial

November Speaker Bio:
Thomas D. Franklin, Jr., Ph.D.
Dr. Franklin received his B.S. & M.S. from Wake
Forest University and his Ph.D. from the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a
cardiovascular physiologist by training and spent
21 years in research with the diagnostic and
therapeutic applications of ultrasound in medicine.
For eighteen of those years he served as an

also was President and Executive Director of the
Indianapolis Center for Advanced Research, Inc.
from 1981-1990. From 1990-2003 he served as President of the Texas Back
Research Foundation and the Texas Health Research Institute. After semi-
retiring in 2003, he became the Sr. Scientific Advisor for the North Texas
Enterprise Center, a business accelerator for new start-up companies in
medical technologies. He served as Executive Vice President for Research &
Regulatory Affairs for Organ Transport Systems, Inc., a start-up company in
donor heart preservation technologies from 2005-2011. He currently serves
on the National PKU Alliance’s Scientific Advisory Board (which he chaired for
5 years), The Salvation Army-Plano Corps’ Advisory Council (which he chaired
for 4 years), Sr. Scientific Advisor for NTEC, Inc., and the Board of Trustees of
the Dallas Rotary Club Foundation.

arts. Teaching martial arts and competing in amateur
fighting became outlets for maintaining his sanity during a
finance career. Upon meeting him, it was obvious that a
computer-in-a-cubical-job was not his calling. At every class
and in emails in-between, Mike filled us with positive energy
that helped us accomplish more than we imagined we could.
Assisting Mike were professors and PT students from
UTSW. The students were familiar with PD and could spot
us as needed. Mike trained the students prior to the study
so they would also be able to help with boxing basics. None
of us were quite sure what we were getting ourselves into
at the first class, but we got a good idea when Mike
informed us that those of us in the study were “Fighters.”
The PT students were our “Trainers.” During the first few
classes, we learned footwork, basic punches and the correct
mechanics for performing them. Soon we began rotations
through stations where we threw different types of punches
and combinations at stationary heavy bags. It was fun, but
also work! At the end of each session everyone was pretty
much drenched in sweat. But it was a good feeling each
time we made it through. We became Fighters!
Of course since this was a research study, there were tests
and measurements taken at the beginning, mid-point and
end of the process. Flaws in the study design were identified
that will be addressed and changed for future studies. Still,
in 10 weeks, some participants had improvement in gait
speed, core strength and balance. But primarily, everyone
felt stronger. Perhaps most significant was the group
dynamics created by our little community of Fighters and
Trainers all encouraging each other and laughing at things
that are all-too-familiar among folks with PD. The
camaraderie seemed to have an effect on non-motor
symptoms of PD that is almost impossible to quantify.
When asked what the future holds following this study, Mike
said that he sees people benefit from physical therapy, but
then they need ways to build on that momentum outside of
the limited coverage provided by insurance. Exercise
programs like what DAPS provides at low-cost or no-cost
are an excellent way to keep working outside of a
therapeutic environment. But above all, Mike is thrilled to be
able to put his passion for boxing to work in a way that
benefits other people. “I view this program as more of a
personal calling than anything,” said Mike. “I am even more
thrilled that my fellow students at UTSW and the Faculty
have joined the cause and really had a good time. All of us
are excited to continue working with DAPS.”
Some of the Fighters from this first study continue meeting
together on occasion and are hopeful there will be more
classes available soon. A longer-term research study is
being planned to begin in early 2017 in conjunction with
DAPS and UTSW. Watch the newsletter for details. Join us
and you can be a Fighter too!
There is Always Something
There are places where the arrival of fall comes with a
blast of color. I hope that you’ve had the wonderful
experience of waking up in places like that and seeing the
morning sun paint the trees in brilliant colors. Fall is a
time of thanksgiving that dates back to the days when the
harvest determined the tone of the next year. The reward
for all the work that had gone into planting and tending
the crops came down to this one season. No doubt there
were some harvests that were better than others, but our
tradition of Thanksgiving is built upon the idea that there
is always something for which to be thankful.
Every year, 60,000 people in America will hear a doctor
say, “You have Parkinson’s disease.” That will not only
affect the tone of their next year, but that of many years to
come. The good news—the “something” for which to be
thankful—is that there is much being done in the field of
Parkinson’s research. I long for the day that we wake up
to find that the breakthrough has come; the cure has been
found! For now, I am thankful for all the focus and great
work being done by so many organizations to not only
find the cure, but to find ways of living well with
Parkinson’s.
DAPS is one of those organizations helping people with
Parkinson’s to live well. I hope you are among those who
participate in the DAPS programs and that DAPS is on
your list of things for which to be thankful.
Happy Thanksgiving,
A message from Mike Miles
Executive Director
