• Indian Railways (IR)is striving to match the Indian economy's growth rate. It is alsoactively.looking at doing sowithout waiting for new capacity creation. Hauling heaviertrains and increasing the balancing speeds is an obvious solution. There is therefore acompelling need to increase the horsepower of our locomotives.

• Indian Railways had entered into a Transfer of Technology (TOT) contract withMis EMD,USA in 1995. This, besides a TOTfor manufacture of 4000 HPlocomotives,

.also included a TOT for EMD's 5000+HP 20 cylinder 710 series engine. Thistechnology could not be exploited because of axle load constraints. (Elsewhereabroad, the 20 cylinder engine is used with 30T axle load; IRhad a limitation of 21Taxle load). However, the 20-710 engine was the ideal platform for enhancing thepower of freig ht locomotives to 5000 + HP.

• A window materialized some time ago when IRallowed the axle load to increase from21T to 22.5T. This proved to be crucial in activating the latent TOT. It opened anopportu nity fo.-:development of a 5500 HPfreig ht locomotive.

• The new limit of axle..load, ·though a catalyst, was not enough. It needed innovotive.design initiatives like the Garib Rath profile, hybrid bogie, compact traction controlsystem, useof stainlesssteel and an ultra-light underframe to accomplish this task.

• The 5500 HP WDG5 is primarily aimed ,'at improving the throughput with higherbalancing speeds. The lo~omotive will be able to achieve 100 kmph speed on leveltrack with 59 BOBRNwagon trailing load. It can also start the same load at 1 in 150grade.

• WDG5.brings to IRadvanced technologies such as Electronic Fuel Injection (for higherfuel efficiency and emission control), Functionally Integrated Railroad Electronics(FIRE),Electronically Driven Auxiliaries (for higher reliability and energy efficiency)and user friendly driver console among other state of the art technologies. Both DLWand RDSO have been active partners in the design of this trail blazing locomotivewhkh provides enhanced 5500 HPwithin the IR's axle load constraints.

• The locomotive has been designed to set up new standards of crew comfort and safety.It implements EN 12667 collision protection, provides for heated ventilation & airconditioning, toilet and visual TFT based operator display. Though longer thanWDG4, it provides better visibility through enlarged maximum moving dimension,elimination of blower duct and a raised radiator profile.,
