Phyllis King has resigned from the Board of Directors and Bob Lockler has been appointed in her place. Bob garnered the next most votes at the annual election in October. He brings a great deal to the board and we are lucky to have him! We hope you will all be able to make it to a board meeting in the near future to meet our new board in person and get to know us! Our meetings are the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM at the neighborhood pool. If you wish to address the board on any matter, please contact the management company so you can be placed on the agenda for our meeting.

Our Board of Directors made a presentation to our MUD board at their November meeting in attempts to get assistance with our park renovations. They have some beautiful long range plans to help us and have shown us the master plans for the future - which include a brick fence along Franz Road, a greenbelt along the easement, a park at Griffin House and Repiton, as well as additions to our existing park; but it seems that in the short term, we will be working alone to make the park a safer place to play. We will be working on this in the next few months and will report back to you with our progress. We were delighted, however, to build a new, strong, working relationship with our MUD; which will be a building block for future projects and ventures!

We are now working with a new management company! You should have received a welcome letter from them near the end of November. After entertaining many bids, we selected the very best offer with the most advantages for the Hamlet. This should be a very positive move for our community! The name of the new company is Principal Management Group of Houston (PMG) and they may be reached by phone at 713-329-7100. Hilary Chala is the manager handling our community and she may be reached at the listed number. Please do not continue to contact PCMI, as they are no longer handling our neighborhood.

Annual assessments have been mailed out! You should have received a welcome letter from PMG with instructions on mailing your payment to their office. Unfortunately, when PCMI mailed out the assessments they did not follow our agreement to place the new management company’s mailing address for payment remission.

WHEN YOU MAIL IN YOUR ASSESSMENT PAYMENT, PLEASE PLACE IT IN A NEW ENVELOPE AND LABEL IT IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER:

Principal Management Group of HoustonAttention: 2012 Assessment11000 Corporate Centre Drive, Suite 150Houston, Texas 77041

Please pay promptly to avoid fees. We understand that times are tough but please make payment of your maintenance fees a priority! You are a vital part of this community and your prompt payment ensures that we can accomplish the goals of the Hamlet this year. Thank you in advance!

We had a tremendous turnout for our November board meeting in support of the Harris County Sherriff’s contract! The board invited Sgt. Castleberry from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to attend the meeting and we were delighted for homeowners to have the opportunity to address him directly with their questions and concerns. The board listened to your voice and has approved the contract with unanimous support. Please be aware that, with so few of our homeowners paying their assessments, this contract costs an enormous portion of our actual budget for the year. We urge you to pay your annual assessments on time in support of our deputy and our community!!!

This year, we will have many projects to see through together. Our pool will need much work before it can open for the summer season. Our park is in need of immediate repairs. These are not minor projects and will require our monetary resources and our time in planning and preparation. We urge you to attend board meetings and be involved if these are topics of interest to you. This community belongs to all of us! Please be positively involved!

As we welcome in the New Year together, let us focus on the goals we have in common and the community we share.

Happy New Year! Sincerely,Peyton Belunek, President - Williamsburg Hamlet

Carta de la PresidentaNuestra elección de los funcionarios de la Junta Directiva de la comunidad se llevó a cabo el 3 de Noviembre en una sesión especial. Sus nuevos oficiales son los siguientes:

Peyton Belunek - PresidentaMartin Courville - VicepresidenteBob Lockler - Tesorero / SecretarioAlix Cabarcas - DirectoraLarry Ingham - Director

Principal Management Group of HoustonAttention: 2012 Assessment11000 Corporate Centre Drive, Suite 150Houston, TX 77041

Feliz Año Nuevo!m Atentamente,Peyton Belunek, Presidenta - Williamsburg Hamlet

feedback. We understand that you may feel passionately about some topics in the Hamlet; but we do ask that when you choose to attend meetings, you treat your fellow neighbors and board members with respect.

Our next two board meetings will be held on January 24th and February 28th.

Williamsburg Hamlet WebsiteWilliamsburg Hamlet should have a functioning community website around the time of this newsletter. A link should be available now or in the near future from www.pmghouston.com to our community association’s webpage. From the new website, you will be able to view our deed restrictions, bylaws, governing documents, financial reports, minutes from meetings of the board of Directors, architectural review forms, pool information and general community information. The old website ceased to be updated in October and is no longer an official website of the community or the board of Directors. We apologize for the communication gap between the two websites, but we appreciate your patience as we transition!

safety updateThere were several car break-ins on Griffin House Lane in the month of November. You are urged you to lock your cars, keep all of your belongings out of view and preferably, not in your cars at all. Please keep your homes well lit and locked. Please get to know your neighbors if you don’t already! If you notice any suspicious activity, please contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office immediately at 713-221-6000 for non-emergencies or 911 for emergencies.

sex OffendersWilliamsburg Hamlet, like all communities, is not immune from having sex offenders living in the area. Families with small children and teenagers, specifically, may wish to familiarize themselves with the registered sex offenders and their locations within our community, as well as their photographs. This information is available to you from the state on the Internet at the following website: https://records.tdps.state.texas.us. You may search their database for sex offenders in our area by entering the zip code 77493.

deed restriCtiOnsThe board asks that those of you who have received letters from the management company comply with the requests to abide by the community’s deed restrictions. When you purchased a home in this community, you chose to participate in our rules and regulations. We all want a beautiful Hamlet and every home makes a difference! If you are having difficulty complying with the request, please contact the management company and explain your situation. Communication is the first step toward understanding!

arCHiteCtural revieWWithin this newsletter, you will find a new “Application for Approval to Modify Home or Property.” This year there have been some changes in the Texas State laws and our deed restrictions have evolved to reflect those changes. The new laws allow for solar energy devices, the display of U.S., Texas, and U.S. armed forces flags; and rainwater harvesting systems, as well as certain types of shingles. All of these additions to your home would require an architectural review and are only allowed in certain places on your home/lot. The deed restriction changes will be available on the new website once it is up - there will be a link from www.pmghouston.com. To avoid penalties, please complete the approval form before you begin any change or addition to your home, which will affect the exterior appearance of your property. Martin Courville is the board contact for architectural reviews; so if you have any questions regarding the approval process or if an application is needed, please contact him at 281-343-6881 or [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

Pick up and discard fallen blooms.• Cultivation: Changes in design may now be made, new beds dug and old ones rebuilt. Correct defects in drainage. Incorporate gypsum into heavy soils: repeat in three weeks. Dig granite dust, rock phosphate and quantities of organic matter into soil. Allow time for settling before planting.• Fertilize: Daylilies, spuria, Louisiana and bearded irises with complete fertilizer. Give strawberries 1 teaspoon ammonium sulfate, keeping six inches away from plant. Fertilize pansies with manure tea or blood meal. Water in.• Fruits: Plant fruit trees. Mulch figs with grass or straw to prevent freeze damage to crown.• House Plants: Water, when surface soil is crumbly dry. Wash dust off leaves to open pores. Mist often. Inspect for diseases and insects. Reduce water for poinsettias.• Lawns: Remove thatch, aerate and feed with low nitrogen mixture.• Pests: For petal blight prevention, spray azaleas and camellias as flowers open. Spray for scale with dormant oil solution if temperature will be above 35˚ and below 85˚ for next 48 hours. Always read and heed manufacturer s directions before spraying.• Propagation: Ivy cuttings root easily this month and next. Root cuttings of shrubs in mixture of loam and coarse sand; keep damp and semi-shaded until rooted. • Prune: Fruit trees in advance of new growth. Prune to groom and shape. Do not remove too much. Remove dead wood from trees and shrubs before spring buds swell, but do not prune spring bloomers. Prune crape myrtles. Prune nandina and others of similar growth habit by cutting unwanted canes out at base of plant. • Roses: Annual pruning about the middle of February, just before the spring buds break. To prevent later appearance of disease in the old beds, keep garden clean of debris and weeds. Complete preparation of new beds for roses.• Transplanting: January is one of the best months to transplant woody plants, both evergreen and deciduous, especially trees. Energy will be expended on roots instead of foliage. Learn ultimate size and cultural needs of tree or plant before buying. Consider dwarf varieties to avoid crowding later. Group plants of similar cultural needs. Do not work wet soil. Assure good drainage. Keep plants moist.• Vegetables: Prepare beds, preferably raised for drainage, with about 50% humus, including rotted manure.• Winter Protection: Expect freeze any time; plan for protection of tender plants. Water. Remove coverings, particularly plastic, when temperature rises. Protect low plants with dry leaves, pine needles or soil mulch, but remove when weather warms.

Mentors meet with their student on campus at a pre-designated time each week. As mentor and student build their relationship, they decide together how to spend their mentoring time. Whether spent playing games, reading or just talking, that one hour a week makes a tremendous difference in the life of a child.

To be a KEYS Mentor, you need:• A belief in the potential of every child• Criminal history background check in compliance with the FCRA• One hour per week to spend with a child, on campus during the school day, during the school year• Participation in a brief campus KEYS orientation before you begin• Successful completion of a KEYS application and subsequent approval process

Pictured (L-R): Jim Burns, KEYS Mentor; Eduardo Reyes, former KEYS student now attending the University of Houston; Dr. Cazilda Steele, Principal, Mayde Creek High School; and Wayne Meyer, General Manager, Firethorne.

Firethorne Leads the way as Keys PLatinum sPonsor

Firethorne has committed to Katy ISD’s Partners in Education (PIE) as the first KEYS Scholarship Platinum Sponsor for 2011. As a KEYS sponsor, Firethorne is helping to create scholarships for students who have participated in KEYS through their senior year. This is the first year that PIE has opened sponsorship levels for KEYS, with 100 percent of the sponsorship dollars going directly to KEYS Scholarships. Former KEYS student Eduardo Reyes and his KEYS

mentor Jim Burns visited Firethorne representatives last week to thank them for their generous support.

The KEYS (Keep Encouraging Youth toward Success) mentor program is offered to Katy ISD students who are on the brink of success. Often, these students have been challenged by life circumstances outside of their control. Mentors meet with their students on campus each week during the school year, in between the school day.

When Reyes’ mentor first met him, it wasn’t with the intent of becoming his mentor, it was with the intent of helping him organize his backpack, locker and life. After several weeks of helping Reyes get organized, Burns naturally fell into the role of becoming his mentor. For the next six years, Burns helped Reyes recognize his gifts, talents, intelligence and encouraged him to pursue his dreams.

Firethorne, a 1,400-acre residential community in Katy/Fulshear, is actively involved with Katy ISD through programs such as Junior Achievement and the Partners in Education annual Promise to Read and Food for Families programs. Firethorne is located near the crossroads of I-10 west and FM 1463.

KEYS’ annual event Ties & Tiaras, hosted at Agave Road on March 1, 2012, will celebrate mentors while supporting the KEYS Scholarship Fund. Featuring student performances throughout the come-and-go event, the 2012 Mentors of the Year will also be announced.

KEYS is brought to you by Partners in Education, the department that brings the community into the classroom. For more information about KEYS and to find out how you can get involved, visit the KEYS web page at www.katyisd.org, or contact Martha Brown at 281-396-2468.

GIFTED STUDENTS GET CREATIVE WITH TRASH

Hundreds of gifted and talented elementary students enjoyed getting together at the Katy Parents of Gifted & Talented (KPGT) GT Create Date, to make puppets out of recyclable materials. Students and parents let their imaginations loose as they turned trash to treasure at this fun event

co-sponsored by KPGT and KISD. Led by professional puppeteer Greg Ruhe from Puppet Pizzazz and professional artist Taylor Perry, the children enjoyed an inspiring and hilarious puppet show before launching into their own creations.

The Katy Parents of Gifted and Talented (KPGT) organization was formed in 1987. It is a non-profit organization. KPGT aims promote the welfare of gifted and talented students by empowering KISD families and educators with information, resources, tools and voice to ensure opportunities that encourage gifted students’ passion for learning. Further information is available on KPGT’s website at www.kpgt.org.

During the October 24th Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Pat Guseman, president of Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), presented the 2011 Demographic Update that shows steady growth for Katy ISD, at a rate of approximately three percent each year over the next five years. While slightly slower than the rapid growth experienced between 2001 and 2009, the report shows approximately 23,000 additional students moving to the district during the next 10 years. The district also announced that as part of the Long Range Facilities Plan process, Katy ISD has entered into the initial stages of the Attendance Boundary Modification (ABM) process.

Last November, Katy ISD voters approved a bond referendum that included five new campuses – three elementary schools, one junior high and one high school. Four of the five campuses are set to open in fall 2012 and High School No. 7 is slated to open in fall 2013.

Katy ISD is a TEA Recognized district serving more than 62,000 students. Covering 181 square miles west of downtown Houston, Katy ISD is comprised of 53 campuses and with more than 8,000 employees is one of the largest employers in the West Houston area.
