The WBA Connected Cities Advisory Board (CCAB), World Wi-Fi Day and the Policy Advocacy Group strengthened our global positioning and recognition. The CCAB includes 25+ cities/governments and is led by CIOs/senior executives from New York, San Francisco and Singapore. With the establishment of Connected City Blueprint and City Wi-Fi Roaming projects, the WBA is increasingly being seen as the ‘Go-To’ forum for Smart City activities. The first ever World Wi-Fi Day had robust support and social media coverage. On World Wi-Fi Day, the WBA issued a report outlining revealing the extent of the digital divide that exists globally – most notably in some of the world’s largest cities.
On the membership front, several key players joined WBA this year, including Acom Networks, Affirmed Networks, Broadband Networks, BSNL, CDOT, Cobalt, CTM, Edge Communications, elecom Personal, Facebook, Globus Roaming, Gotell, JC DRAWN, July System, m3connect, MCI, Nominum, Procera, Rogers Communications, Semtech, SingTel, SIT WiFi, Smart Communications, Tata Comm, Wifirst, Wire & Wireless, ZTE.
The industry outlook for areas addressed by WBA Vision 2020 remains very positive based on the survey conducted as part of our Annual Industry Report. The confidence in Next Gen Wi-Fi investments is rising and the vast majority agree that coexistence & convergence (of unlicensed and licensed) is an extremely important part of network strategy.
