Accounting Course Length: Two semesters Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 10 hours Accounting is designed to teach students the preparation and interpretation of financial statements, the importance of complete and accurate financial records, and knowledge of business procedures. If you plan to operate a business, major in business in college, or just improve your personal financial background, accounting is a necessary component for your education. The computer will be used as a tool for the review of accounting basics and then applied to a computerized business simulation using Macintosh computers. Note: Recommended for Business Academy…See SCC & WHS Academy partnership Course Book for details. Advanced Accounting Course Length: Two semesters Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Accounting Course Credit: 10 hours Advanced Accounting is designed for the career-oriented student who plans to major in college in accounting, marketing, or business administration. The course provides the student with the opportunity to develop a deeper knowledge of accounting procedures and techniques utilized in solving business problems. The computer will be used as a tool for the review of accounting basics. Advanced Auto Mechanics-Auto Shop Tech Course Length: One semester at Southeast Community College (two high school periods in a row) Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Theory of Auto Technology Course Credit: 10 hours high school; 3.5 college Registration Form: SCC Automotive Registration Form is required with all registration materials Transportation: To be provided by the student This course is taken for dual credit through Southeast Community College. Dual credit means that students may receive both college and high school credit hours for the course. The course will be offered to seniors first and then juniors if space remains. A cap of 18 students has been put on the course by Southeast. Students registering for this course must provide their own transportation to and from Southeast Community College and will be bound to Southeast Community College rules while on their campus. This course has been designed to meet the beginning requirements for all automotive programs offered at Southeast Community College in both Lincoln and Milford. A student who intends to enter this vocation should register for this course.

Agribusiness Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, Fiber and Natural Resources Course Credit: 5 hours This course will focus on the principles, management tools, marketing and sales practices involved in the agribusiness industry. The relationship of culture and interpersonal skills in the business industry is explored. This course will give students interested in Agribusiness, Ag Lending and Ag Sales an introduction and overview of this field. Animal Science (Biology & Technology) Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, Fiber and Natural Resources Course Credit: 5 hours A course to help students understand the biological principles of animal production which will influence and affect animal management decisions. Students will gain a basic understanding of animal anatomy, physiology, genetics, nutrition, health and animal welfare. Business English Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours Business English is designed to provide skills and knowledge needed for effective communication. This course covers the basics of effective oral and written communication skills; which are necessary for obtaining and maintaining successful employment. Topics that are covered include a review of language art skills, technical reading and writing, and effective business presentation tips. Business Law Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours This course acquaints the student with the American legal system and how it relates to each person today. Topics include rights and obligations of minors, law enforcement, lawsuits, torts, consumer law, law-related careers, and other pertinent current events. Presentation of materials is offered through class discussion, case problems, dramatizations, films, and guest speakers. The class takes a field trip to see an actual case trial in session, to experience a small claims court session, and to tour a correction center.

Careers Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours The ever-changing nature of careers and the rapidly changing skills needed for employment necessitates that students gather information from numerous sources to enable them to make wise career decisions. Through this course, students will gain knowledge about how to access information, understand job markets, develop interviewing techniques, find a variety of educational options, and develop a successful educational plan for the future. Students will examine the world of work, assess their interests and abilities, and make realistic decisions on academic majors and careers. Note: This course is a prerequisite for entry into the senior Occupational Release. Companion Animals (Biology & Technology) Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisites: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, Fiber and Natural Resources and Animal Science (Biology &

Technology) Course Credit: 5 hours This is a course to help students demonstrate a basic understanding of the care of small animals, while also understanding the biological principles of small animals which will influence and affect management decisions. Students will study companion animals including cats, dogs, rabbits, rodents, other small mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and other companion animals. Construction Technology Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 11, 12 (Priority to 12th graders) Prerequisite: Furniture Design and Assembly or by permission from counselor; Algebra or higher Course Credit: 5 hours Cost: Students will pay all costs of personal projects Other: Protective lenses are provided. However, students have the option to buy their own or they can

purchase lenses from the teacher. This is a skill-oriented course designed for students with an interest in the construction industry. Students will spend 60% of their time in a classroom setting studying construction technology and 40% of their time in a lab setting performing hands on applications. Students will work in teams as they learn and use the basic techniques and procedures used in the areas of construction technology. Students will also focus on the following course content areas: understand and using terminology (vocabulary), using tools and safety practices, reading drawings, designing small structures, estimating costs, framing, exterior and interior finishing, and roofing. Engine Operation & Design Course Length: One semester at Southeast Community College (two high school periods in a row) Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Advanced Auto Mechanics @ Southeast Community College Course Credit: 10 hours Cost: SCC tuition, a lab fee will also be assessed Registration Form: SCC Automotive Registration Form is required with all registration materials Transportation: To be provided by the student This course is the study of engine construction, focusing on the physical principal of two-stroke and four-stroke cycles as applied to single and multiple cylinder engines. Course features will include disassembly, measurement, inspection and reassembly to manufacturer’s specifications for ignition systems, fuel systems, lubrication systems, valve trains and engine adjustments.

Entrepreneurship Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Recommended for Business Academy Course Credit: 5 hours Learn how to apply your entrepreneurial qualities. This course will focus on units of business ownership, management, marketing, advertising and more. Students will create a business plan on a business of their choice as an ongoing project throughout the semester. Essential Car Care Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours This course is NOT designed to be a “hands-on” course. This course is not designed to meet the needs of the students whose career plans are focused in automotive technology. Essential Car Care will cover aspects of the automotive field which are pertinent to every student, regardless of career choice. Areas taught will range from automotive service to buying an automobile. A person who completes this course should have a basic understanding for an automobile and should feel comfortable in either repairing elementary problems themselves or having a professional do the repair. This class will not only give each of the students a good understanding of an automobile and vital problem solving skills, but will also provide them with the knowledge to save some of the costly expenses of owning an automobile. Foods 1 Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours Cost: $10 fee Foods I is a course based on issues related to food and nutrition in society. Students will be empowered to examine information involving nutrition and health, nutrition and sports, food preparation and use of human resources to best utilize the food budget. Foods II Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Passing grade in Foods I Course Credit: 5 hours Cost: $10 fee This course will include a more in-depth study of nutrition in keeping the body in top condition. Other concepts will include food and the market place, food preservation, additive and supplements, trends in food consumption, energy conservation and kitchen planning, world hunger, foreign cuisine and the use of technology in the kitchen.

Furniture Design and Assembly Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Industrial Technology or counselor permission; Extended Algebra or Algebra (or currently enrolled) Course Credit: 5 hours Cost: Students will pay all costs of personal projects Other: Protective lenses are provided. However, students have the option to buy their own or they can

purchase lenses from the teacher. Students will use power tools and machines in the wood shop. Students will study project design and estimation techniques, wood joinery, surface preparation, and finishing. Students will develop advanced wood working skills and learn the maintenance and safety of power hand tools and machines. These techniques will be used to build an end table and a piece of their own choosing (if time allows). Horticulture Science Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, Fiber and Natural Resources Course Credit: 5 hours This course will identify opportunities in the floriculture, floral design, interior/exterior landscape design and management, nursery production and turf management industries. Students will describe the elements of designing, maintaining, and constructing landscapes and designs, giving them knowledge for continuing education and employment and the knowledge and skills for proper plant care and maintenance through hands on experience.

Independent Living Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None, Course Credit: 5 hours This course will develop and increase skills needed to live successfully on one’s own. Concepts covered will be time and money management (such as budgeting, credit cards), insurances, renting /buying a place to live, occupation /college, personal safety, and nutritional needs. Information Technology Applications I Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours Information Technology Applications I is a valuable course for students who desire a broader knowledge of the computer and its applications. Students will learn or enhance their skills in the areas of word processing, spreadsheet applications, database applications and operating systems. Note: Successful completion of this course is required for acceptance into the Southeast Community College IT Career Academy. See SCC & WHS Academy Partnership Course Book for details.

Information Technology Applications II Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Knowledge of Microsoft Office is a must. Course Credit: 5 hours Students will develop skills in advanced word processing, spreadsheet applications, database applications as well as integrating applications using word processing, spreadsheet, database and electronic presentation software. Additionally, students will develop skills in desktop publishing and will identify issues related to Internet use and security, electronic communication, and ethics. Introduction to Agriculture, Food, Fiber and Natural Resources Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours This curriculum emphasizes the major components of the agricultural, food and natural resources systems. The course will prepare students to make an informed decision of the program of study in which they are interested. This course will allow students to discuss six agricultural pathways: Agribusiness, Animal, Plant, Natural Resources, Environmental and Food Processing Systems. It will introduce students to the Agricultural Education model of Classroom/Lab Instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs, and FFA. Introduction to Business, Management and Marketing Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours A survey course designed to introduce the student to the principles and functions of business. Business will be studied as a part of a total social, political and economic environment. The various functional areas of business will be discussed: economic systems, forms of business ownership, small business, management, human relations, marketing accounting, finance, stock market and business law. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on activities, web-based activities, and real-life application. This course is designed as an introduction to further study in the field of business and other business-related courses. Introduction to Industrial Technology Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours Cost: Students will pay all costs of personal projects Other: Protective lenses are provided. However, students have the option to buy their own or they can

purchase lenses from the teacher. This course will study the basic skills and uses of design and woodworking. Students will be introduced to the basic skills and uses of drafting equipment, design sketching, computer design, hand tools, and hand power tools. Objectives are to introduce tools, processes, and applications of drafting and design. Students will also briefly explore how the computer is used in the drafting and design industry. Students will complete the course with the designing and building of a Metric 500 CO2 racecar and one wood project.

Livestock Management Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Systems and Animal Science (Biology &

Technology) Course Credit: 5 hours This course is designed to help students utilize the biological principles of animal production which will influence and affect animal management decisions. This course will focus on the management of animals as a food source through dairy, red meat, and poultry production. Macroeconomic Principles Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Microeconomic Principles Course Credit: 5 hours This is an economics course for those students that have taken microeconomics. The student will learn how to use macroeconomic tools to analyze economic conditions. The course will also include an international trade component. Topics to be taught include: Gross National Product, Aggregate Supply and Aggregate Demand, Unemployment, Inflation, Monetary Policy, Fiscal Policy, and International Trade. Note: This course provides credit as a social studies class and as an elective. Microeconomic Principles Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours This course will introduce the student to basic economic principles. The course will teach the student to use microeconomic tools to analyze economic conditions. Topics to be taught include: Scarcity, Opportunity Costs and Tradeoffs, Supply and Demand, Markets and Prices, Competition and Market Structure (Including Perfect Competition, Monopoly and Oligopoly), and Resource Markets. Note: This course provides credit as a social studies class and as an elective. Natural Resources Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, Fiber and Natural Resources Course Credit: 5 hours Curriculum emphasizes basic scientific principles and processes involved in conserving and/or improving natural resources such as air, water, land, forestry, wildlife, and energy. Students will gain an understanding of alternative energy, important natural resources in Nebraska, and basic wildlife management.

Occupational Release Course Length: One or two semesters Grade Level: 12 Prerequisite: Careers – or concurrently enrolled Course Credit: 5 hours per period – Pass / Fail each semester Registration Form: Waverly High School Occupational Release Student Agreement

Other registration papers will be required during the program Transportation: To be provided by the student In order to be enrolled in Occupational Release, a student must have successfully completed or be enrolled in Careers. Occupational Release is an opportunity to give students responsibility, the opportunity to work and earn money, and to learn about the work world first hand. The work experience will be one that must be accepted by the school. The employer must agree to provide an evaluation twice a semester and time stubs for the student to turn in weekly. Students will be released with either one, two, or three hours in the a.m. or p.m. Students will be required to work one hour for each school hour released. Ninety (90) work hours a semester will equal 5 credits and will be awarded according to the agreed upon number of release periods. Personal Finance Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours Other: This course may be counted towards graduation credit in the area of mathematics with administrative approval. Personal Finance is designed to help students manage their resources and to make sound personal financial decisions. Students have the opportunity to determine how economic factors affect planning and budgeting. They will improve their judgment and abilities in using credit, being a wise consumer, preparing income tax forms, earning a paycheck, and saving and investing money. Plant Science Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Agriculture, Food, Fiber and Natural Resources Course Credit: 5 hours This course applies scientific principles to the management of plants. Topics covered include study of structure and functions of plants, including requirements for growth, methods of propagation, plant anatomy, nutrition and the management of pests and diseases. Identification and selection of plants along with their use and function and physiological processes are also stressed. Students will gain hands on experience in the plant science industry.

Residential Design (C.A.D. – Computer Aided Design, Drafting) Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Industrial Technology or permission from counselor Course Credit: 5 hours The student will acquire knowledge of residential design methods, materials, and blueprint reading. The student will design a set of residential house plans to include: floor plans, foundation plans, wall sections, side elevations, and room perspectives. Students will use the computer to design and complete all course requirements. Student Assistant Course Length: One or two semesters Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Individual teacher permission and administrative approval Course Credit: 2.5 hours per semester Other: Placement and transportation forms will be provided at the beginning of the semester for Parent / Guardian signatures. The Student Assistant program is designed for those students who have a desire to assist in various duties throughout the school system. Student assistants are selected by staff/administration. The staff/administrator must sign a slip stating he / she will be responsible for the student and the student is responsible to that individual and regular school expectations/rules. The areas in which a student can assist are as follows: Athletics/Activities set-up, school maintenance, classroom, mentoring, counseling, office/clerical and assisting in other school buildings in the district.

Technical Design (C.A.D. – Computer Aided Design, Drafting Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Introduction to Industrial Technology or permission from counselor Course Credit: 5 hours Students will be introduced to general design procedures of architecture through computer-aided design (CADP and career opportunities in the field of drafting. Students will spend 90% of their time working with the software. Students will learn the basic techniques by drawing two predesigned houses. The course will end with students picking a design and modifying it to their own specifications. Theory of Auto Technology Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours This course is NOT designed to be a “Hands-On” course. This is a study of auto tech terminology and concepts. This course is designed for a student who shows interest in the automotive field. Students will deal with the basic fundamentals of an automobile, from engines, suspensions, exhaust and everything in-between. Theory of Auto Technology is a prerequisite to Advanced Auto Mechanics-Auto Shop Tech, but if a student does not wish to pursue this area of study, he or she will leave with a strong base of the automotive field.

Welding Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: None Course Credit: 5 hours Other: Protective lenses, gloves and pliers are required and can be purchased from the teacher. Students enrolled in this course study basic welding techniques covered in the areas of arc, oxy-acetylene cutting and welding. The study of German-speaking people and countries through cultural materials is also continued in this course (German food, videos, music, etc.). This class is a continuation of German-language acquisition. The students’ vocabulary and creative usage of German are expanded while learning about the German culture. German 7-8 Course Length: Two semesters Grade Level: 12 Prerequisite: German 5-6 Course Credit: 10 hours German 7-8 is an advanced level course. Algebra 3-4 Course Length: Two semesters Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Algebra 1-2 and Geometry Course Credit: 10 hours This course builds upon student mastery of algebraic expressions and forms by reemphasizing solutions and graphs of linear functions from Algebra 1-2 and expanding to solutions and graphs of quadratics, powers and roots, and functions based upon these concepts. Applied Mathematics Course Length: Two semesters Grade Level: 11, 12 Prerequisite: Extended Algebra or Math 1/2. Anyone who has completed Geometry is not eligible to register for this course. Course Credit: 10 hours This course is intended for juniors and seniors who learn mathematics best in “applied settings” and for students heading toward vocational-technical careers. Algebra and geometry concepts are taught in occupational settings. Students will be involved with making measurements in lab situations, making calculations with the collected data, and discussing the results. Topics in the course come from pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and consumer math. Such information guides decisions in our personal lives and enables us to meet our responsibilities as citizens. Statistics will equip students to understand and make good decisions about the data that they will encounter in their careers and personal lives. Students will learn how to evaluate surveys and polls, how to examine various types of graphs, determine probabilities of events, and investigate different methods of voting, as well as other topics. Often the homework for this class will be a reading assignment or finding information on the Internet, rather than a typical math homework assignment of working exercises. This course is intended for those students who may need a statistics background for future college and career choices, those who feel they need to wait a year before taking their next advanced math course, and students who realize that learning statistics is going to be relevant to their personal lives.

Strength and Conditioning Course Length: One semester Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: If taking the course for a second time, student must have received a 90% or above to be eligible to take the course again. Course Credit: 5 hours This is a semester long class designed to teach proper lifting techniques, improve strength, and increase muscular endurance through a personally designed lifting and conditioning program. Students will also spend class time doing flexibility exercises designed to improve all ranges of joint motion so as to help reduce the likelihood of injuries. Improving agility will be another focus of this class. The overall goal of this class is to develop the proper attitudes that contribute toward an appreciation for strength and conditioning.

The class work and learning is centered around lecture, discussion, labs, and a variety of models, charts, x-rays, and the skeleton. This course is recommended to students planning for a health career. The course covers the ten systems of the human body (Examples: skeletal, nervous, hormonal). Microscopic anatomy, as well as gross anatomy along with the functions of tissues, organs, and systems are studied.
